Description

J. MAGEE.
BOILER FLUE CLEANER.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 1. 1915,
Patented Dec. 9,1919.
ance MM i so UN STATES PATEN FEIOE.
JOHN MAGEE, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DIAMOND POVI'ER SPECIALTY COMPANY, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN,A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN.
BOILER-ELITE CLEANER.
Application filed October 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN MAGEE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, in the county of l/Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Boiler-Flue Cleaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to boiler flue cleaners and it is the particular-object of the invention to obtain a construction applicable to a type of boilers known as the (la-hall. This type is-characterized by the arrangement of annular series of upright tubes connected to top and bottom headers, the upper header being annular and the flue connection to the stack passing therethrough. The combustion gases are retained within a surrounding annular furnace wall and, pass laterally inward between the tubes to the central flue and then upward to the stack.
To clean the surfaces of the tubes in a boiler construction as above described, I have devised a cleaner unit constructed as follows:
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical central section through a boiler to which my improvements are applied; and
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof.
A is the outer casing or furnace wall, which is of annular form, connecting at its base with a laterally-extending combustion chamber B. O is the base header of the boiler and D is an annular top header. E are annular series of tubes extending between the bottom and top headers, and as shown in Fig. 2 arranged in staggered relation to intercept straight radial movement of the gases. F is a flue connected to the top header D and leading to the stack.
To clean the surface of the tubes in a construction as above described, it is not possible to introduce a steam pipe laterally through the entire length of the annular flues because of their staggered relation. The base header is also imperforate, and the only opening to the interior is the flue connection F. I have therefore introduced a steam connection for cleaning the tubes by way of this flue and annular header, and by extending a single rotative unit axially Specification of Letters Patent.

within the series of tubes the entire surface may be cleaned.
In detail, G is the steam admission pipe passing above the top header D into the flue F. H is a header extending vertically and axially 0f the boiler, having at its upper end a swiveled connection I to the admission conduit G, and at its lower end journaled in a suitable bearing such as J. This header extends through the conical bafile plates K, which are usually placed within the annular series of tubes, and a series of jet nozzles L serve to direct the steam from the header laterally outward. M is a driving connection for rotating the header, which as shown comprises bevel gears connecting the header to a laterallyextending shaft N, which at its outer end is provided with a sprocket O and operating chain P. By means of this connection the operator from a convenient point outside of the furnace can rotate the header H to sweep around the entire series of tubes with the radially-directed jets of steam. Thus whenever the tubes become coated with soot they may be quickly cleaned by admitting steam to the header H, and revolving the latter by manipulation of the chains P.
What I claim as my invention is The combination with a boiler having a vertically disposed cylindrical outer casing, a bottom header within said casing, an annular top header at the upper end of said casing, a plurality of concentric series of tubes connecting said bottom and top headers forming a central chamber, a baffle plate extending across said central chamber, and a flue extending upwardly from said annular header, of a cleaner comprising a perforated blower tube extending axially through said annular header, central chamber and baffle plate, connections for supplying steam to said tube extending through said flue, journal bearings adjacent the ends only for said tube, and actuating mechanism within the flue adjacent the upper journal bearing for rotating said tube.
In testimony whereof I afflx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN MAGEE.
