ToaZZ whom/it may concern; 0 Be it known. that'I, BRuoE-EqEAToN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Dallas, inthe county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented new and usefulflmprovementsf Faucet-Drains, of which the following is aspeciflcatiom j This invention relates to drain attachments for faucets or similarwater dispensing devices, the object being to provide meansfor automatically admitting air into the pipe after the water supply has been cut off and to drain the pipes without opening the fancet, thereby eliminating the danger of freezing and damaging the pipes. Another object is the provision of a device of this character in which the vent will be automatically closed by pressure of the water when the supply is again restored,so
that leakage of the faucet is prevented.
A further object is to provide a drain which may be used in connection with the ordinary pipes or faucets now in use, the application of the invention requiring only a slight addition and no material change in construction, so that only a slight increase tion, with the invention applied thereto.

valvestem and having itsinnerend in communication with a transversely disposed opening 15, which inthe present form of invention extends diametrically. through the stem. The lower or inlet end of the passage 14 is in communication with that portionof the faucet throughwhich water flows from the'pipes, so that when this end of the passage is open, water may flowj through the said passage and through the opening 15, which is in communication with the outlet end 16 of the faucet.
The passage through the valve stem is adapted to be automatically closed and to remain in such closed position under the pressure of water passing through the faucet through the medium of a float 17, this float acting to cover and close the inlet or lower end of the passage. Carried by the float 17 and extending into the passage is a stem 19, which terminates in a hook 20, the latter belng adapted to receive a pin 21 which passes through the transverse opening 15 and by this means will connect the float to the valve stem. The length of the stem 19 is such as to permit of a limited play of the float in a direction longitudinal of the stem 13. To
properly seat the float and to guide the same in its longitudinal movement, there is provided a plurality of pins 22 which also extend within the passage 14 and are guided by the wall of the passage. It is,'of course, understood that the connecting means just described may be varied as desired andit is not the purpose of the present application to limit the invention to the particular means shown and described.
In the ordinary use of the faucet, the float 17 is held in position to close the passage 14 by the pressure of the water against the said float, but when the water supply is cut ofl' and pressure relieved the float will leave its seatand open the passage and admit air to the pipe and drain the latter without the necessity of opening the faucet. By this means the freezing of the water which would otherwise be left in the pipe is prevented.
. The invention is susceptible of various changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
, Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. The combination with a faucet having a longitudinally disposed passage in the inner end of the valve stem and a transverse opening connected therewith, of a float adapted to close the inlet end of said pas= sage and a hook carried by the float extending within said passage for engagement with means carried by the valve stem for permittinga limited movement of the float in a longitudinal direction with respect to the stem.
