.Be it known thatwe, Jot-IN G, BOHMKER and J on Gnrs'rwr rrn, citizensof the United States, residing at .Kankakee, inthe county of Kankakee and State-of Illino1s, havej1nvented certain new and useful Improvementsin Plows, of which the following is a specification."
This application isa division of our copending application SerialNo. 184,07&, filed Aug. 2, 1917; and-the lnvention has particularreference tot-he means for, supportthe rear endofthe frame of a gang i In plows of this characteiyuthe rear end of the plow frame'is arranged to-be supported in ra isedor lowered positionin-accordance withthe position of the-meansfor supporting the forward end of theplow frame, and it is the general object of'our invention to provide means of advantageous construction and arrangement for supporting the rear end of a'plow frame. i
A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide rear supporting means of such construction and arrangement as to. be adapted to 'be automatically and positively locked in position to hold the frame raised,'or to be readily releasedto support'the frame in. its lowered position.
The objects oftheinvention thus gen erally stated, together with other and ancillary advantagesare attained by the con struction andarrangement illustratedin the accompanying drawings forming part'he're of, in which Figure 1' isa side elevation of the rear end of a plowshowing the rear supporting means"v holding the frame in raised position. Fig; 2 is a similar view, but showing the rear end of the plow supported in its lowered position. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the rear end-of the plow, with the partsin the position shown in Fig. 1.
We have deemed it necessary to illustrate herein only the rear 'end of the plow, since the inventionhas reference merely to the rear supporting means and the: means for controlling the same. For a complete description of theplowyreference is made to the" above mentioned application.
Referring to the drawings, 3indicates the rear portion of a rigid frame consistingof two plow beams 4 and 5 suitably secured tooperable by means of a rod v a set screw 11, in a casting 12, which is pivoted at 13 to the rear end of the bracket 9.
. It will be seen that to raise and lower the rear end of the frame, it is only necessary to swing the furrow wheel on its pivot 13 from inclined to vertical position and vice versa. This isaccomplishedby Ineansof a lever 14: pivotally connected to the casting 12 and 15, the forward endof which (not shown) may be connected any suitable manner with suitable 0peratmg mechanism. .The lever 14 ispivoted at its lower end to the'lower portion of the bracket 9, andjust above such pivotal connection is connected by means of a link 17 with the spindle-supporting casting 12. The upper end of said lever 14 extends to a point just. above the frame 1, and is pivotally connected to the rear end of a link 18 having a slot 18 therein in-iwhich the bent rear end 15 (Flg. 3) of the actuating rod 15 is adapted to slide. The parts are so proportioned substantiallyin vertical position, so that the frame isln lts raised position, the casting 12 abuts against the rear edge of the bracket 9 to prevent a forward swinging movement of the spindle; andto limit the rearward movement-of the spindle and hence the downward movement'of the frame, an adjustable stop'screw 19 issuitably mounted upon one side of the bracket 9 in the path of movement of the lever 14.
It will be seen that the spindle 10 may be swung from its inclined position to a vertical position by a forwardpull on. the upper end of the lever 14 by means of the actuatingrod 15, and to facilitate such swinging movement of the spindle 10, we preferably provide a coiled tensionspring 20 connected at its rear end to the forward end of the link 18 and at its forward end to the beam 4 of the and arranged that when the spindle 10 is frame as by means of a bracket 21. spring is tensioned sufficiently to partially counterbalance the weight of'the rear end of the frame, Preferably means are provided for automatically locking the parts in position to positively hold the spindle 1O in vertical position. The means for accomplishing this result may comprise a curved latch member 22 pivoted between its ends to the lever lt and having a hook 23 on its lower end arranged to engage with a projection 24 on the upper edge of the bracket 9. The latch is so arranged that when the lever is raised into vertical position, the hooked end thereof falls by gravity into engagement with the projection 24:, and in order to prevent the latch from tilting so far forward as to drop behind thewprojeetion 24, a lug 25 is provided on the latch, adapted to engage with the lever to limit the downward movement of the forward end of the latch. The upper end of the latch is adapted to lie adj aoent the rear end of the link 18 in the path of movement of' the bent rear end of the actuating rod 15 operating in the slot 18 and it will be seen that when the rod 15 approaches the rear end of said slot, it will engage with and swing the latch to raise the hook E23 thereon out of engagement with the projection 24:. Therenpon the lever 14 is free to swing rear- .wardly on its-pivot, as is also the casting 12 carrying the spindle 10, to lower the frame.
When the rearend of the frame is in its lowered position, the bent rear end 15-of the actuating rod 15 is at the rear end of the slot 18 in the link 18 and holds-the hook '23 raised, as shown in Fig. 2. Thus, in the operation of raising the frame, when the rod is drawn forward, tov move the lever 14: and spindle 10 into vertical position,it moves to the forward end of the slot 19 and permits the hook 23, ofthe latch member to swing forwardly into engagement with the projection'Q l to lock the parts in operative position. Similarly when the frame is being lowered and the rod 15 is moved rearwardly,
the movement of the rod relative to the link 18" enables it to engage with the upper end of thelatch member to swing its hooked end out of engagement with the projection 24 and-thusto release the parts for movement -1nto inoperative position. JVVe claim as our invention:

A plow having, in combination, a frame, a bracket on. the rearendof the frame, a spindle having a furrow wheel thereon, a member pivoted to said bracket and carrying said spindle, means for swinging the member, said member and bracket being arranged'to engage with each other to limit movement of the memberinone direction, and means for locking said member against movement in the opposite direction, whereby to hold the framein raised position, said locking means being directly thereon,
lever pivotally connected to said member, means pivotally mounted on the lever for swinging said lever, and means for locking said lever against movement relative to the frame in one direction, so as to hold the frame in its raised position and adaptedto be swung in the operation of said leverswinging means in the other direction to release the lever and spindle whereby to permit a lowering of the frame. 7
