To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JAMES BEDNEY ARTER, subject of the King of Great Britain,
residing at James Works, Greet, juxta Bir mingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented a new and useful Imwhich purpose the gunners have to count the number of projectiles inserted or the number of empty cartridge cases after fir-' ing, but this method is both inconvenient and unreliable.

The object of the present invention is to provide guns with a reliable automatic counting or recording apparatus and in accordance therewith the recoil apparatus of the gun is connected to a tachometer or equivalent countin device through the me dium of a trip mechanism which is operated by the movement of the recoil apparatus.

The tachometer a may be of any suitable construction, while the trip mechanism consists of a pivoted catch or lever I) connected to the tachometer a by a cable 0, or other equivalent mechanism, the pivoted catch '6, being so arranged that it is actuated by the movement of the recoilof the gun d in the one direction, but not on the return movement.
Referring to Figs. 3 and 4 the cable 0 is connected to a sleeve 6 loosely mounted concentrically with the driving spindle :of the tachometer.
The sleeve 6 is fitted internally with a pivoted pawl f upon which acts a spring 7. The tachometer driving spindle g carries a ratchet wheel h which is fixed thereon and the pawl f engages with the ratchet h. A coil spring is is provided one end of which is attached to a fixed part of the tachometer casing and the other end of which is attached to the sleeve 6. The arrangement is such that when the gun is fired the recoil moves the lever 6 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, thus pulling on the cable 0. The pull upon the cable 0 rotates the sleeve 6 thus causing the pawl f to drive the ratchet wheel h and the spindle g. In this way the tachometer indicates that a shot has been fired. After the recoil action has taken place and the gun moved into its original position the coil spring k will move the sleeve e'back into its original position thus taking up the slack in the cable 0.
The tachometer a is preferably arranged to record the total number of projectiles- Which have been fired and also the daily total, the daily total mechanism being adapted to be restored to zero whenever required.
What I claim then is 1. The combination with a gun of a tachometer and a .pivoted lever for driving said tachometer, one end of said lever being disposed in the path of the recoil apparatus, and a flexible member connecting the other end of said lever with a rotatable driving sleeve upon the tachometer, and adapted to cause rotation of said driving sleeve.
' 2. The combination with a gun of a tachometer and a pivoted lever for drivin said tachometer, one end of said lever being disposed in the path of the recoil apparatus-and a member connecting the other end of said lever with a driving sleeve upon the tachometer, said driving sleeve having a pawl in engagement with a ratchet wheel upon the driving spindle of the tachometer,
and means for returning said driving sleeve to its original position after each operation.
3. Thecombinaltion with a gun of a tachometer and a pivoted lever for driving said tachometer, one end of said lever being disposed inthe path of the recoil apparatus and a member connecting the other end of said lever with a driving sleeve upon the tachometer, said driving sleeve having a pawl in engagement with a ratchet wheel upon the driving spindle of the tachometer and a coil spring having one end fixed and the other end attached to said driving sleeve, for returning said driving sleeve to its original position after each operation.
4. The combination with a gun of a taand a pivoted lever for driving said tachometer one end 01? said lever being disposed in the path of the recoil apparatus, and a flexible ineinber connecting the other end of said lever with a rotatable driving sleeve upon the tachometer, and adapted to cause rotation of said driving sleeve,- said driving sleeve having a pawl in engagement with a ratchet Wheelv upon the driving spine oee and a flexible member connecting the other end of said lever With a rotatable driving sleeve upon the tachometer, and adapted to cause rotation of said driving sleeve, said driving sleeve having a pawl in engagement with a ratchet Wheel upon the driving spindle of thetachometer, and means for returning said driving sleeve to its original position atter each operation, and a coil spring having one end fixed and the other end attached to said driving sleeve, for returning said driving sleeve to its original position after each operation.
