To all whom, it may concern:
. it known that l Tnnooonn a citizen of the t United L tes, re Montclair, in the county of itssex and tit-ate of New ersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Elements for Singeing Apparatus, of wll ch the followin is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
.My invention relates to an element for singeing apparatusand more particularly toan element of this character to be used in connection with the singeing of threads embodying therein a troughed resistance member adapted to bebrought to a state of incanoescence by being included in an electrical circuit. Heretofore, thread singeing apparatus embodying members made incandescent by being included in an electrical circuit, have been employed, but such members have been-so constructed and mounted in the apparatus, as to produce weakness in the resistance member and tend toward the warping thereof when heated. Furthermore, the structure of such elements has been such-as to make their mounting in series upon the bus-bars, and their adjustment thereon, in proper relation to other mechanisms in the machine, diflicult.
An element of the character herein described made in accordance with my invention, is so constructed as to avoid any sharp bends in the material of which the resistance member is made, the means for connecting this member with the electrical terminals incorporated in the element, being so formed as to avoid likelihood of breakage of the memben adjacent, said, electrical. terminals as the result of the elongation of the mem ber under expansion or contraction.
Another characteristic ofmy invention is a structure by which .a vertical or lateral warping of the resistance meurber is prevented, the construction beingsuch as to prevent any distortion of this member while permitting the free expansion and contraction thereof under varying temperature con ditions.
An element made in accordance with my invention is assembled in relationto other elements of the apparatus, means being provided whereby the element in its entirety may be quickly mounted upon the bus-bars and adjusted thereon to establish the proper relation between the resistance nuunber a these mechanisms for supporting the thread and rewinding after it has been singed.
The invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and described and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawings, (4 indicates the rectilineal troughed portion of a resistance member adapted to be made incandescent by being included in an electrical circuit. This member ismounted upon ablock b of insulating; material, in a manner to permit it to be elec trically connected with bus-bars c and (Z included in the structure of an ordinary singeing apparatus, The manner of mounting this member is such as to permit the free expansion thereof and prevent such distortion thereof as would bring the trough out of true alinement.
At one end of the troughed portion a, the resistance member is turned upon a curve at substantially right angles to the troughed portion thereof, to form a flexible extension adapted to be engaged between a clamp plate e and the flange f of an angular fitting, the other fiange f of which seats upon the block 7). At the'other' end of the troughed portion a, said member is bent upon a curve, to form anextension (0 extending substantially at right angles to the portion a, the end of this extension being turned at substantially right angles, toward the errtension a, to form a foot (1 adapted to be engaged between a clamp plate g and a plate it seated upon the block 6. The recess in the plate 6. and flange f also provides a clear field for the passage of the thread'to the troughed portion of the member a.
The manner of mounting the extension a of the member a permits the free expansion of the troughed portion of this member by reason of the flexibility of said extension.
To avoid any tendency of the troughed portion 0- of the resistance member intermediate the extensions a--a to warp in any direction to an extent which 'would materially eliect the operation of the device, I provide a bridge 2'. mounted upon the block 6 intermediate the plate 11. and the flange f, this bridge being out of the path of the current so as to have no tendency to short circuit the element. The lbridge is provided with an opening at the edge thereof through which the troughed portion a of the resistance member passes, said opening having overhung portions 1' adapted to engage the opposite edges of the trough while being spaced apart sufliciently to permit the insertion of the thread in the trough. Suthcient clearance is provided in the opening in the bridge 2' to permit expansion of the member a, without causing any binding thereof in the opening.
Upon the side of the block b opposite to that upon which the member a is mounted, are metallic plates j and is connected respectively by means of metallic screws, indicated .in dotted lines in Fig. 1, with the flange f and the plate h, which screws serve not only to firmly clamp said flange and said plate in position upon the block b, but also as a means by which said flange and said plate and the resistance member carried thereby may be placed in electrical circuit with said bus-bars 0 and (I included in the structure of the ordinary singeing machine. Cooperating with screw threaded openings in the plate 7' are metallic screws j and j which are spaced apart sufiiciently to span the bus-bar c, said screw having associated therewith a clamp plate j adapted to be forced thereby upon said bus-bar in a manner to firmly clamp said bus-bar between said plate and the plate 7'. Cooperating with the plate are screws In and k and a clamp plate adapted to cooperate in a similar manner with the bus-bar (I which is of opposite polarity to the bus-bar c. This construction not only provides a convenient manner of mechanically and electrically connecting the singeing elements with the bus-bars, but permits convenient and. accurate adjustment thereof in relation to other mechanisms in the machine, and insures peri'nanency of this adjustment.
The construction above described possesses the characteristics of minimizing a tendency toward the distortion of the troughed portion a of the resistance member as a result of expansion; to prevent possibility of such distortion thereof as will vary the alinement of the trough in a. manner to interfere with a uniform singeing action of the flame therefrom upon the thread, and to permit the quick and convenient mounting and adjustment of the element upon the bus-bars, to insure a proper electrical en agement of this element with said bars, an permanency in the adust'ment of the element.
The operation of the herein described apparatus is substantially as follows In singeing apparatus, a plurality of elements such as the element herein described, is mounted upon a. sequence of bus-bars incorporated in the singeing apparatus, a number of said bus-bars being coupled in series. Such bars are ordinarily of short length, with the ends of adjacent bars spaced apart sufliciently to permit the mounting of the singeing elements thereon.
In assembling singeing elements made in accordance with my invention in an apparatus of this character, the screws j'j and l.;'-l: are unscrewed sufficiently from the plates j and A: respectively, to permit sufficient clearance between the plates jj or /t'k to receive the bus-bar, and thus permit the element to slide freely thereupon until it has been brought into the proper relation to other mechanisms in the apparatus. Vhen the block b has been properly positioned, the screws j-j and Ar -J0 are used to clamp the bus-bars 0 and (I between the plates y'j'" and l:k respectively, thus not only firmly securing the element in the proper relation to other mechanisms in the apparatus, but securing the proper electrical connections between the element and said ibus-lbars.
Vhen the circuit is closed, the current will flow from the bus-bar 0 through the plate j to the base f of the angular fitting. through the screws connecting said base with the plate through the flange f to the extension (1; through the troughed portion a of the resistance member to the extension (L2 thereof; through the plate I) to the plate A; through the screws connecting said plates, completing the ('llCllit to the other bus-bar (I. As the current thus flows through the singeing element, the troughed portion (,1 thereof will become inramlcscent. so that a thread passing through this troughed portion, without contacting therewith however, will have the fluff thereon effectively removed.
As the temperature of the portion a rises, the material thereof will expand, the extcn sions aa yielding under the expansion stresses sufficiently to minimize any tendency of the portion a to bulge toward or away from the block 7). The bridge i arranged about midway intermediate the extensions (K r? will prevent any lateral bulging or distortion of the portion a vithout interfering with the expansion of said portion because of the clearance atiorded in the opening in said bridge aboutv said troughed portion, The bottom of the opening in the l'iridge i will prevent bulging to ward theblock 6, while the overhung portion a" will positively prevent bulging away from said block.
The bridge 2' must be so constructed as not to interfere with the expansion of the portion a between it and either extensions a or (I? thus avoiding any tendency of the troughed portion to warp between said bridge and said extensions respectively.
The curvature of the resistance element at the point of connection between the portion a and the extensions a and a respectively avoids any weakness in the resistance ele ment at this point, and compensates for the expansion of the troughed portion, minimizing the liexure of the extensions f-a The manner o1": mounting the bridge 1' prevents short circuiting or" the element through this bridge. 7
It is not my intention to limit the invention to the precise details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, it being apparent that such may be varied withoutdeparting from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having described the invention what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent i 1. An element for singeing apparatus em bodying therein troughed resistance member having resilient extensions at the opposite ends thereoit, projecting from the bottom of the trough of said member and at substantially right angles thereto, a support of insulating material for said member, clamps oi" electro-conductive material adapt ed to operativel y engage said extensions respectively, and means whereby said clamps may be electrically connected with a source of electrical supply,

An element for singeing apparatus embodying therein a troughed resistance member having resilient extensions at the opposite ends thereof, one of said extensions having an inturned end extending at substantially right angles thereto, a support of insulating material, an angular fitting carried thereby, a clamp plate, whereby one of said extensions is secured in relation to said sup port, said fitting and its cooperating clamp plate having recesses therein providing clearance for the troughed portion of said resistance member, a plate ted upon said support, a clamp plate cooperating therewith whereby the inturned edge of the other extension secured to said support, and means whereby said fitting and aid plate may be electrically connected with a source of electrical supply.

An element for singeing apparatus enibodying therein a block of insulating material, an angular fitting adjacent one end thereof and a plate adjacent the other end thereof, said fitting and said plate being of electro-conductive material, plates mounted upon the other side ot said block, mechanicall and electrically connected with said fitting and said first named plate respectively, two
screws car led by each of said last named plates spaced apart thereon suliiciently to span a bus-bar, clamp plates mounted. upon said screws respectively whereby said block may be supported from and adj ustably mounted upon a bus-bar, and said fittingand said first named plate may be electrically connected therewith, a troughed resistance member having resilient extensions at the opposite ends thereof projeeting at substantially right angles to said resistance member, one of said extensions having an inturned end, a clamp plate co-- operating with said-fitting and with an extension at one end of said resistance member, said fitting and the clamp plate cooperating therewith having recesses therein providing clearance for the troughed portion of said resistance member, a second clamp plate adapted to cooperate with said first named plate in securing the inturned end of said other extension, and a bridge carried by said block having an opening through which said resistance member passes, and overhung portions thereon adapted to engage the edge of the troughed portion of said resistance memher.
