7 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec,.2, 1919,
Application filed March 19, 1918, Serial No. 322921;: Renewed Jun 25, 1919; Serial No. soaeeal by declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in devices for facilitating the removing of tires from wheels and conslsts essentially in the provision of an apparatus for separating and contracting the ends of .the rim of wheel to permit a tire to be applied thereto or removed therefrom.
The invention consists 1n a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combination and v arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then speclfically defined in the appended claims.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view showing the application of my invention to the rim of a wheel.
' Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view. .Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view, and
Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the means for separating the ends of the rim laterally to permit the same to be contracted.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter:
A circular disk A having an aperture B through which passes the unthreaded portion of the shaft C has pivoted theretoby their upper ends, a series of bars H provided at their opposite extremities with hooked ends N designed to engage the flange of a split rim. The shaft C has a hand wheel D and turns freely in the aper- 'ture of the disk A, but is prevented from longitudinal movement relative thereto by collarsshrunk or pinned to the shaft, one a ove an h er be ow the disk, A secdi'sk has threaded engagement with the H is a. cylindrical rock shaft R having a pin R projecting therefrom intermediate the bars, said shaft R having a bent por tion T forming a handle.
In the application of my invention, the several hooks at the ends of the bars or rods H are caught over the marginal edge of the rim and the rock shaft mounted on two of the bars is so positionedrelative to the rim, that the finger R will be a slight distance from the joint of the rim. By rocln'ng the shaft R in one direction the finger R" bearing against one end of the rim may cause the same to be moved latof the rim, after which by turning the hand wheel D the rim may be contracted, one end of the latter overlapping the other which will permit the tire to be removed from the rim.
.In replacing the tire, the rim is held in a contracted form, after which the hand wheel is turned in the opposite direction permitting the rim to expand and the rock shaft is thrown back to its normal position, permitting the ends of the rim to come together. By the provision of the device embodying the features of my invention it will be noted that a person may easily and quickly remove and replace the tire without the necessity of the helpof a second person, and without the employment of other accessories which are commonly employed for this purpose.
What I claim to be new is- 1. A device for removing tires, consisting of an apertured disk, bars pivoted at one end to the disk and having hooked ends at their other extremities adapted to engage the circumference of a detachable split rim,
revolve in the aperture of said disk, but held from longitudinal movement relative thereto, a second disk having screw threaded connection with the shaft, rods pivotally connecting the hooked bars and said second'disk, and means mounted on the hooked bars for causing the ends of the rim t be mo d t of alinement with each other w e MA E PATENT. OFFIQE- .erally out of alinement with the other end a shaft having a hand wheel and free to e 2. A device for removing tires, consisting of an apertured disk, bars pivoted at one connecting-the hooked bars and said second "disk, and 'aroek shaft pivotally mounted end to the disk and having hooked ends at their other extremities adapted vto engage the circumference of a detachable split rim a shaft having a hand Wheel and free to I revolve in the aperturelof said disk, but
held from longitudinal movement relative thereto, a second disk having screw threaded.
