To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, NORMAN HURD, a
- citizen of the United States of America,
residing at New Britain, Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Casement-Window Adjuster, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to a friction holding device for swinging sashes,'blinds and the like. The main object is to provide a very simple, comparatively inexpensive and yet efficient means for enabling one to open a sash window, or the like, to any desired exgent in which position it will be frictionally eld.

In the particular form of the invention shown herein, 1 represents a single bladed link. 2-2 represents the two blades of a double bladed link. The said links are pivotally connected together at 3. The link 1 is pivotally connected at 4 to a plate 5 which may be screwed to the overhead stationary part 6 of a window frame or casing. 7 represents a hinged'sash. Secured to the top stile of the sash 7 is a bracket. This bracket comprises a back plate 8 from which projects forwardly a washer-like extension 9, which extension is preferably integral with the back 8. The blades 22 of the double bladed link are washer shaped at their rear ends and enlarged to a size corresponding substantially to the washer-like extension 9. These two blades 22 rest respectively on top of and underneath the extension 9. 10-10 are washers which correspond substantially in size to the washer shaped ends of the blades 22. These washers 10'-l0 in turn rest against the blades 2-2 on the outside of the same. 11 is a bolt having a head at one end and arranged to receive a threaded tension adjusting nut 12 at the other end. This bolt passes through the several washer shaped ends described as aforesaid so as to draw the several surfaces of the same into frictional contact, the pressure depending upon the degree to which the nut 12 is screwed down on the bolt 11. The shank of the bolt 11 is larger than the threaded end, as best seen in Figs. 3 and 4:, and this shank is provided with one or more longi tudinal grooves as indicated at 14.l4-, Fig. i. The washers 10-10 are provided with lugs 1O*10 at their inner edges which project into the aforesaid grooves 14:. The ofi'set extension 9 is also provided with corresponding lugs, which take into the aforesaid grooves la-1iw Thus, when the link members 2-2 are turned, the bolt 11, the extension 9, and the washers 1010 cannot turn with said link member 2-2, so that the frictional binding of the surfaces of the several parts will be sufficient to cause the sash 7 to be retained at any angle at which it may be left when opened. In fact, the said device serves to frictionally hold the sash in the closed position shown in the drawings. The back 8 of the bracket is, as shown in Fig. 2, preferably bowed so that the two screw-holes which receive the'fastening screws indicated at 15--15 will standv practically on a line with the offset member which would tend to draw out the screws. A look nut may be provided if desired to holdthe tension adjusting nut 12 in any desired position of adjustment.
What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, a pair of pivotally connected links, one of said links comprising two spaced blades having washer shaped ends, a bracket having a washer shaped extension, said two link blades standing above and below said washer shaped extension, friction washers arranged above and below the two members of said link, means for drawing the surfaces of the several washer shaped parts into frictional binding contact, and means for preventing the independent rotation of said washers relatively to said washer shaped extension while yet permitting the two blades of the double bladed link to turn between them.
2. In a device of the character described, a'pair of pivotally connected links, one of said links including two washer shaped ends, a bracket having a washer shaped extension arranged to fit between the two ends of the last mentioned link, friction plates arranged above and below the washer like ends of said link, means for locking said friction plates and said extension together against independent rotary movement while still permitting the two washer like ends of the "aforesaid link to turn therebetween, and
means for pressing said several parts together to produce the deslred irictlonal resistance betweensaid parts to hold said" link at different angles relatively to said bracket.
3. In a device of the character described,
