To all'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP Mel-TA E, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in DrawingRolls for Drawing and Evening Rolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of drawing rolls for draw mg and evening machines, and more particularly to a novel'construction of top draw ing roll whereby the rolls are adapted to compensate for variations in the weight or thickness of the sliver and to vary their drawing or evening action to secure an even and regulated speed of the material.
One object of the invention is to improve the construction of the top drawing roller for machines of the character described whereby the said roller is adapted to have movement relative to the lower. drawing roller to sustain as varying degrees throughout its length as the case may require, to vary the speeding pressure according to the weight or" thickness of the difierent portions of the sliver being-acted upon.
Another object of the invention is to pro- 7 vide means for regulating the pressure of the upper drawing roller on the lower drawing roller, and to thereby enable the-machine to produce a sliver of any desired weight, whether heavy or light, andwithout changing the speed of the rollers or changing the unfinished sliver or changing gear.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
This invention is an improvement on the drawing roll for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 1,191,366 were granted to me on Feb. 24, 1914.

Bearing blocks 6 are also shown, through which the shaft 3 extends, the said bearing blocks being arranged at a suitable distance from the ends of the said rolls.
Theupper fluted beading or drawing roll is indicated at 7 and in accordance with my said invention comprises a non-circular shaft 8, fluted roll sections 9 and bushings 10 which are arranged in said roll sections and through which the shaft 8 extends, each of the said bushings being cylindrical in form and being provided with a central longitudinal slot 11 in which the shaft 8. fits, the said slots being open at their upper sides so that said bushings are arranged for vertical movement with respect to the shaft. The shaft is here shown asrectangular in cross section. The shaft. passes through and is vertically movable in vertical slots 12 of bearing blocks 13, the said bearing blocks having recesses 14 in their lower sides and being fitted by means of said recesses on the upper sides of the blocks 6. Regulating screws 15 pass through and engage in vertical threaded openings in the shaft 8. Said regulating screws bear at their lower ends on the bottoms of the slots 12, their upper portions being free to rotate in unthreaded openings in the upper portion of the blocks i 13, as shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4:.
Spacing collars 16 are mounted on the shaft 8 between the series of roll sections 9 and the blocks 13. This increases the pressure on the spring 22 and hence causes said spring and the bushings 10 to force the roll sections 9 downwardly. This forces the sliver more deeply in the flute. When a lighter sliver is desired this is obtained by turning the screws so that said screws raise the shaft '8 and thus diminish the pressure on the springs 22 and correspondingly diminish the downward pressure of the roller sections 9, as will be understood. In

Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. In a machine of the class described, the combination with a shaft, roll sections loosely surrounding said sha'ffland yieldablv associated therewith, of standards, bearing blocks recessed at one end to it on said standards, each block having a vertically disposed slot through which the shaft is passed for vertical ad ustment, and an adjusting element threaded to the shaft and having one end bearing'against the lower wall of said slot, whereby the shaft may be adjusted vertically to vary the tension of said yieldable means;
2. In a machine of the class described, a
shaft, roll sections loosely surrounding said shaft, a bushingin eachsection, said bushing being substantially Ushaped in cross section, a pin projecting "from each bushing through said shaft, a leaf sprin fixed at its center between said pin and bushing and l'iaving its opposite ends yieldably supporting said shaft, and means for adjusting said shaft. vertically to vary the tension of said spring.
