Description

C. E. FRANCIS. SEWING MACHINE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 10, I918.

. SATES ATENT @FIQE.
CHARLES EDWARD FRANCIS, OF WESTMINSTER, LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO VICKERS LIMITED, F NESTMINSTER, ENGLAND.
SEWING-MACHINE.
Application filed may 10,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWARD .FRANCIS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Vickers House, Broadway, Westminster, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Sew mg-Machines, of which the followingis a i the lower thread at the part where it leaves the bobbin casepasses through the tension device after traveling over a portion of the said case from the-aperture therein through which the thread passes from the bobbin. A form of bobbin case of the said kind is for 'examp'le that described in the specification of applic'ants United States Patent No.
In bobbin cases of the said kind there is a tendency in the case of some kinds of thread forthe thread to bulge upwardly or outwardly at the part of it traveling over the bobbin case when the machine is suddenly stopped, owing to the bobbin continuing its rotation a little after such stoppage and to the fact that the tension device is situated at the point where the thread passes finally from the bobbin case. Should such a bulge in the lower thread occur, there is a possibility that at times a moving part might ac cidentally engage it, and the main object of the present invention is to avoid this possibility while avoiding increase of tension on the thread.
According to the saidinvention the thread is guided from about the point where it passes through the bobbin case to the tension device, along a course having an upper surface or roof in distinction to an open topped groove or the like, whereby without increasing the friction on the thread it is impossible for the thread to bulge upwardly away from the bobbin case.
In order that the said invention may be well understood and readily carried into elfect the manner in which it may be performed, is hereinafter particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in connection, by Way of example, with Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2, 191a.
1918. Serial N0. 233,620;
a certain form of bobbin case which embodies the preferred form of the invention.
Figures 1 and 2 are face views of opposite sides of the bobbin case looking in the direction of the arrows A, B Fig. 3, respectively.
Fig. 3 is a ,plan view of the bobbin case.
Fig. ft: is a fragmentary section taken on y the line "C, C Fig. 6.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary section taken on the line D, D Fig. 4, and,
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary section taken on the line E, E Fig. 4.
Figs. 7 4, 5 and 6 are drawn to a larger scale than Figs. 1, 2 and 3.
In the following description the parts of the said figures are referred to bythe letters marked thereon the same letters of reference indicating the same parts in all the figures of the drawings.
The bobbin case illustrated is generally of the form described and illustrated in, the
specification and drawings of the United States Patent No. 1241949, being one form of bobbin case of the kind before referred to. It has a peripheral flange a over which works a shoulder in the rotary looptaker or hook, a pin 6 on which the bobbinworks, a tension device 0 and an upstanding projection, ear or lug (Z. The lower thread after leaving the bobbin passes through the aperture 6 in the periphery of the body of the bobbin case thence to and through the passage in the projection (Z and then upwardly between the outer side of the said projection and the tension 0 to the needle hole inv the throat plate. c is the slot in the body of the bobbin case through which the said thread is threaded into the aperture 6. f is the surface of the bobbin case which is adjacent to and bears against the ring holder thereby retaining the bobbin case in the rotary looptaker. These constructional features constitute no part of the present invention and will be better understood by referring to the specification of the patent hereinbefore re adjacent to its entry end is made higher than the remainder as illustrated at h in Figs. l and 5 and a slit or slot 2' is provided in the body of the bobbin case, leading forwardly from the aperture 6 as best illustrated in Fig. 6. The roof of the passage h restrains the thread from bulging upwardly into the path of any moving part, although the higher part at it permits the thread to bulge within limits thus minimizing any tendency the thread may have to bulge out laterally from the passage h in consequence of being restrained in an upward direction. The thread works in the slit or slot .z' which being at an angle to the slit or slot 6 avoids any possibility of the thread passing out into the slit or slot 6 in consequence of be ing restrained by the form of the passage h.
The passage it may be formed by a lateral saw cut in the part 9, and the slit or slot a and the upward enlargement h of the said passage may be together formed in one operation from the inner side of the bobbin case by a circular saw.
The embodiment of the present invention hereinbefore described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings is by way of example only and the details described may be varied without departing from the nature of the said invention. F or instance the part 9 may be an attachment to the bobbin case instead of being in one with it and the passage it may be tubular instead .of open to one side, and in this case the enlargement it would not be needed.
The application of the present invention to bobbin cases of the kind hereinbefore indicated but not .of the particular form hereinbefore described and illustrated differs in no material respect from the embodiment hereinbefore described and illustrated and will be well understood by those versed in the industry to which the invention relates.
l -Zhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l. A bobbin case comprising a tension device at the part where the thread finally leaves the said case, and haying an aperture for the lower thread some distance from the said tension device in a circumferential direction, and a course for the said thread between the said aperture and the said ten sion device, the said case comprising also a roof above the said course, for the purpose set forth.
'2. A bobbin case comprising a tension device at the part where the thread finally leaves the said case, and having an aperture for the lower thread some distance from the said tension device in a circumferential direction, and a course for the said thread between the said aperture and the said tension device, the said case comprising also a roof above the said course supported on one side and leaving the other side of the said course open, for the purpose set forth.
3. A bobbin case comprising a tension device at the part where the thread finally leaves the said case, and having an aperture for the lower thread some distance from the said tension device in a circumferential direction, and a course for the said thread between the said aperture and the said tension device, the said case comprising also a roof above the said course, said roof be ing internally higher adjacent to the said aperture than at other parts, for, the purpose set forth.
at. A bobbin case comprising a tension device at the part where the thread finally leaves the said case, and having an aperture for the lower thread some distance from the said tension device in a circumferential direction, a slit or slot leading forwardly from the said aperture at an angle to the usual threading slit or slot from the lateral edge of the bobbin case to the said aperture, and a course for the said thread between the said aperture and the said tension de vice, the said case comprising also a roof above the said course, for the purpose set forth.
5. ii bobbin case comprising a tension device at the part where the thread finally leaves the said case, and having an aperture for the lower thread some distance from the said tension device in a circumferential direction, slit or slot leading forwardly from the said aperture at an angle to the usual threading slit or slot from the lateral edge of the bobbin case to the said aperture, and a course for the said thread between the said aperture and the said tension device, the said case comprising also a roof above the said course supported on one side leavthe other side of the said course open, the said roof being internally higher adjacent to the said aperture than at other parts, for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I my signature.
