To all whom-it may concern:

Be. it known that I, HERMAN G. MEYER, a citizen of the. United States, residing at Green. Lake, in the county of Green Lake and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf- WVeaners, ofwhich the following is a specification.

This invention relates to weaners for calves, cows and the like.

The object of theinvention is tov provide a simple device of this character which will effectively prevent and cure sucking, will not make the animals nose sore, and in which dangerof loss is reduced to a minimum.

Another object is to so construct such a device that it will not interfere with grazing and requires no halter. or other suspending means for holding it in place.

Anotherobject is toconstruct a simple, safe sanitary and effective as well as humane weaner as it is possible to produce.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described andclaimed, it being understood that changes in the precise. embodiment of the invention herein. disclosed. may be made within the scope of. what' is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the weaner 1 constituting this invention comprises a peg composed of two cones 2 and 3 with their larger ends arranged toward each other and connected by a shank 4 which is here shown integral with the cones, but may be separable if desired. This shank 4 is of a length slightly greater than the thickness of theseptum of a' calfs nose and is designed to be passed through an aperture therein, shoulders 4 being formed at the ends of said shank to prevent the ac- Specification of Letters Patent.

This peg is preferably composed of hard wood, although it may be composed of any other suitable material, or any combination of materials, and the apices of the cones and 3 are sharpened to provide penetrating points 5- which are designed to prick the cow which the animal wearing it attempts to suck, thus causing herto kick and prevent the accomplishment of the weaner wearing animals purpose.

In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the weaner 1 is composed of twosections instead of being made integral as shown in F ig, 2 and is preferably constructed of metal, aluminum being preferred because of its lightness.

The cone-shaped ection, 2 of this form of the weaner is provided with a shank P made integral with the larger end thereof with arounded shoulder 6 at the base of said cone. This shank 4" has an exteriorly threaded longitudinal extension 7 which is designed to engage a threaded socket 8 carried by the base or larger end of the coneshaped section- 3*, a washer 9 being preferably inserted in said socket to insure a reliable connection between the sections.

The sections 2 and 3 are provided intermediatelyof their endswith threaded: portions 10, each having a groove 11 extending longitudinally through said threaded portion which is designed to register with a similar groove 14 formed in a spur carrying member 12 shown clearly in Fig. 5, said grooves being designed to receive a cotter pin for holding member 12 engaged with the member carrying it. This member 12 is threaded for engagement with the threaded portion 10 of each section, it being understood, of course, -tha.t one of these de vices 12 is provided for each section, and has a plurality of radiating spurs or prongs 13 which may be of any desired configuration and bent in any desired direction to adapt them to prick the leg or udder of the animal attempted to be sucked.

Flattened portions 15 are formed on the sections 2 and 3 to facilitate engagement therewith of tools, used for handling the sections.

The form shown in Fig. 4: is similar to that shown in Figs. 3 and 5, except that the detachable prong carrying elements 12 are omitted and the apices of the cone- shaped sections 2 and 3 are provided with prongs or spurs 16 which flare outwardly and are preferably made integral with'the sections.

The shoulders at the ends of the shanks are also smoothed and rounded for a similar purpose. 7

In applying this device, after having tied the animal or secured it by a stanchion, a puncture is formed in the partition between the nostrils by a suitable sharp instrument, and the weaner is theninserted by passing it through said aperture until the shank is engaged therewith, the shoulders on the opposite ends of the shank operating-to prevent longitudinal movement such as would be likely to disengage the device.

In the application of the sectional weaner, it is of course understood that the parts will be separated and the shank inserted through the animals nose and then the other sections screwed into place.

This device, while being extremely simple, easy to apply and cheap'to manufacture, will be thoroughly effective, since any attempt made by the animal wearing it to suck another animal, will cause the penetrating elements carried by the device to prick the animal and cause resistance in addition to the strain which will be exerted by such an that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.

Having thus fully described myinven-tion,

what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A calf weaner comprising a double cone-shaped peg with thelarger ends of the cones extending toward each other and con nected by a shank smaller in diameterthan the bases of the cones, the free ends of the cones having penetrating polnts, and re movable spur carrylng elements carried by said peg.

2., A call weaner comprising .a double cone-shaped peg with the larger ends of the cones extending toward each other and connected by a shank smaller in diameter than the bases of the cones, the free ends ofthe cones having penetrating points.

3. A calf weaner comprising two elongated cone-shaped sections, one carrying a reduced longitudinally extending shank at its larger end, said shank having a threaded terminal, the other section having an internally threaded socket toreceive the threaded portion of said shank, and penetrating ele ments carried by said sections.
