Description

W. B. MCCLAIN improvement in Tonguing and Grooving Knives.
PatentedOct-15,1872.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM B. MOGLAIN, or SANDUSKY, oruo.
IMPROVEMENT IN TONGUEING AND GROOVING KNIVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,303, dated October 15, 1872.
To alkwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. MGCLAIN, of Sandusky, in the county of Erie and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ton guein g and Groovin g Knives, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a face View; Fig. 2, an edge view; and Fig.3, a longitudinal section on the line 0 c, Fig. 1, of my improved grooving-knife.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention has for its object to make tongueing and grooving knives adjustable, so as to enable their use for larger or smaller tongues, deeper or shallower grooves, without requiring their removal from the cutter-head. This invention consists in making each cutter in three parts, the middle projecting or receding part being lengthwise adjustable between the others for the purpose indicated.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a grooving-knife made of three pieces; a, I), and d. The middle piece 1) projects with its cut-tin g end beyond the ends of the side pieces a d to form the groove, and is held to the others by means of a screw, 0, passing through slots or recesses in a and b, as indicated. The cutter b can, by this screw, be fastened to project more or less beyond the cutters a d, and to cut, therefore, a deeper or shallower groove. For a tongueing-knife the same arrangement is made, except that the middle adjustable kniferecedes where the knife 1) projects.
The advantages of this invention are manifold, as they allow the use of the same set of cutters for different work, and admit the adjustment of the same without removal from the heads.
, Having thus described myinvent-ion, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- A three --part compound ton gueing and grooving knife, having the middle one 1) slotted, and adjustable on a cla1np-screw,e, as and for the purpose described.
WILLIAM B. MOGLAIN.
