. JOHN MINOR BUTTS LElWIS, or LYNGHBURG, V1RGINIA.
I 7 non on PIPE coUrLING.
7 To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JO N M. B. Lnwrs, a
"citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchburg, in the countyof Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rod or Pipe Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to coupling means A further object of the invention'is'to'pro vide couplingmeans of the above mentioned character, which may be manipulated in a highly convenient and "expeditious manner.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
i In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View I taken on line 11 of Fig. 2, I I
Fig. 2 s a similar vlew taken at a right angle to the showing of Fig; 1, I I
Fig; 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with the lamping elements released a d hift d the u erposition, 1
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 44: of Fig. 2,
I Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a double coupling, parts being shown in section, and,
Fig. 6 is a horizontal section taken on line 6-6 of'Fig. 5.
In the drawings, wherein forthe purpose I I I I I element or tube, and 23 elements ortubes, 1 arranged at a right angle thereto andupon merals 10 and 11 designate angularly arranged elements to be connected, the same being shown disposed at a right angle.
These elements are shown as tubes, while of course the 1nvent1on 1s in no sense restricted to this precise construction.
My improved coupling embodies a pair of passes through openings 18, formed in-the the tube 10."
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 25, 191-9. Application filedSeptember 27; 1915, Serial No. 255,951.
oppositely arranged jaws 12, which. are I longitudinally curved, for the receptionof the elementll, and extend beyond its'cen'ter, as shown. The l2 carry shanks 13, which are tapered, having straight inner races 14, and longitudinally; tapered outer faces 15, which are curved in cross-section. The jaws 12 form with the outer ends ofthe shanks 13', shoulders 16, which pivot upon I the outer end of the tube 10, as shown. The numeral 17 designates an expanding ele- 'ment, shown as a smooth pin or bolt,'while this construction. This. expanding element tube 10, and a cotter-pin 19 is passed through a transverse opening 20in the'pin shanksoutwardly, and causing them toturn upon the shoulders'lfi, as plvots. The: recesses 21 are curved incross-section, andare thereby adapted for the reception of the expanding element 17, the expanding element also serving to prevent longitudinal displacement or theshanks 13. with resp'ect' to In assembling vthis lm of my invention,
the invention is in norsense restrictedto I '17, holding it against longitudinal displacement. The expanding element or pin 17 is] adaptedfito' be forced within and through tapered openings 21, formed in the inner a -faces of the" shanks 13, thereby movingthe the jaws 12 are first placed upon opposite V sides of the element 11, and the shanks {13 inserted within the end of the tube 10. The transverse pin' 17 is'now passed through the openings 18 and the tapered recesses 21, thereby swinging the sha-nks'outwardly and theja-ws '12 inwardly, into clampingengage- "ment with'the upper element 11-. :It is thus a arent: that the I shanks 13 are locked against longitudinal movement with relation r i to the tube 10 and the jaws' 12. rigidly connect the elements. lOfand .11. I A double coupling-i shown m Figsf 5 and 6, wherein the numeral 22 desi'gnates'an 1 01 ing in opposite directions past its center, as
shown. The jawsof the oppositepairs interfit, and' are provided with teeth 26, for this purpose. v
Each pair of jawshas connection; with shanks 27, similar to'the shanks 13. These shanks project into the tube 23, and are held therein by a transverse expan'din'g'element 28, similar to theelement 17 The element 28 extends through openings 29, and tapered" "recesses 30, formedin the shanks 27, the
shanks turning upon shoulders 81.
In view ofthe foregoing descriptlon 1t is thought unnecessary to state the mode of as "sembling of this form of the invention, as it issimilar to thatfdescribe'd in connection with the first form of the invention.
7 liltisto be understood that the forms of my inventioniherewith shown and. described are to be taken as preferred 'examples of the same, and that various changes: in the subjoined claims.
j shape, slzefandarrangement of parts may 1 he resorted to without departingfrom the spirit of the invention or the scope. of the Having thusdescribed invention, 1
claim-E, r v p I I 1. The tombinationwith atube provided nearits end with a transverseopening, of an elementarra-nged at an angle nearthe end of'the tube, a pair of jaws adapted to receive therebetween theelement and carryingrshanks projecting into the end of the tube, and an expanding element extending through the transverse opening of the tube andQcontactingwith the shanks to forcean element arranged at-an angle near the 7 them apart.
21 The combination'witha tube "provided near, its end with a transverse opening, or
end of the tube, a pair-of jawsadapted to receive therebetween the element and carry- .jnglshanks-projecting into the end of the tube, said shanks being provided upon their innerf faces with recesses, andan expanding element extending through the transverse opening of the tube'and passing between the ,shanksjto enter the recesses thereof tospread the shanks and lock them nal displacement;
against longitudi- Thecomb'nation withla tubeproyided near its end w ith a transverse opening, of
and arranged betweenthe shanks and within the tapered recesses.
4. The combination with a tube, of an element arranged at an angle near the end of the tube, a pair of jaws adapted to receive .therebetween the element and carrying shanks projectinginto the end of the tube J with the outer ends of the shanks contacting With the end of the tube to turn thereon as a pivot, and means tomove the shanks away from each other. e V j 5. The combination with an elementfhaving a tubular end, of alsecond.element ar- 7 ran'ged' near the tubular end and atanangle thereto, a swinging j a'wto. engage 1 the {second named element and having a shank pr'ojecting into the tubular end, theouter end of the shank engaging thetubular end and turning' upon the same as apivot, an expanding elementf passing transversely through the tubular end :and engaging with the shank to move it in an outwardly direction, and acoa'oting jaw connected with the tubular 'end 'to engage with the second named element.
6. The combination withjan element hav- 7 ing atubular end, of a second elementaran angle thereto, a swinging jaw arranged ranged near the tubular endanddis'posed at 7 to engage the secondnamedelem-ent and shank contacting with the tubular end' and turning'upon the same at a pivot, said shank P 'Q -id Q apering shank projecting V v, O thetublllar end, theouter'end of the beingprovided 'with a tapered transverse recess, an expanding elementextendingtransversely ofthe tubular end and adaptedto operate within the tapered recesses, and a coacting jaw carried by thetubular end and engaging thejoppos ite side of the second named element.
7 In apparatusiof the ch'aracterldescribed, oppositely arranged pairs jof jaws" adapted to receive and hold an element, the
jaws having interfitting teeth which extend beyond the center of the element, shanks sefcured tofthe jaws in each pair and adapted for insertion'withina tube, and meansfto move the shanks away from each other. 7'
