To all whom it may concern:
Be it "known that I. EMIL R. Dnavsa, a citizen of the .United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Car riers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i
My resent invention has for its object to provlde an improved wheel carrier for antomobiles which is adapted to carry one or more extra wheels, the term wheel being herein used in a broad and liberal sense.
The invention involves an extensible spindle and cooperating devices whereby one or more such wheels may be carried. For carrying one wheel, one section, to wit, the main or relatively fixed section of the spindle is used, and for carrying a second extra wheel, the detachablespindle section is applied to the main section. The outer ends of the main and of the su lemcntal or oftension section of the spin l e are preferably provided with (in )licate threads so that a single clamping device maybe applied to either thereof. Also. as the best means for detachably connecting the supplemental spindle section to the main section. the former is provided with 'an internally threaded seat adapting it to be screwed onto the threaded endof the main spindle.
Preferably, the spindle is adapted for carrying one ocmore wire wheels such as commonly used on automobiles. However,
by the provision of a sort of skeleton hub and spoke structure, demountable rims may be carried on the s indle much in the same manner as the or inary wire wheels.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention, like characters indicate like parts' throughout the several views.

he supplemental or extension spindle 17 has an internally threaded'socket 18 and radially projecting longitudinal hub engaging flanges 19. The threads of the socket 18 fit the threads 13 of the main spindle 13, so
that the supplemental section is adapted by this means to be screwed onto the said main spindle. .To firmly lock the supplemental spindle to the main spindle, it is shown as provided with a sct screw 20 applied through its socket 18. The projecting end of the supplemental spindle 17 has threads 17? that correspond to the threads 13 of the main spindle.
A suitable spacing washer, so-called,is preferably telcscoped onto the flanges 19 of the supplemental spindle for engagement with the hubs of the wheels carried by the spindle. In the form illustrated in Figs. 1 and-4, the spacing washer is in the nature of a sleeve 21, the endfianges of which are notched at 22 and are adapted to he slid onto the flanges 19. At its inner end, the sleeve 21 has a relatively small conical surface 2:3 am at its outer end, it has a relativelylarge reversely beveled conical portion 24 for a purpose which will presently appear.

Either one or two of the hub and spoke structures 33, 34-, and may be applied to the spindle and so cured in any suitable "way and any suitable inc-zine may he provided for securing thedemountable rims to the respective heads 35.
