oo'L'LArsIBLE METAL FIREPLACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
Application filed August 21, 1917. Serial No. 187,454.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .VVILL'IAM F. NORMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nevada, in the county of Vernon and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Metal Fireplaces, of which the following is a specifi'cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements 1n collapsible fire places, one object of the invention being the provision of a fire place which is especially adapted for use in conjunction with tents and the like, and is so constructed as to. be readily set up or knocked down, and so as to, when knocked down, occupy the smallest amount of space.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a collapsible fire place in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete fire place.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional View thereof. Fig. 4 is a top plan View thereof. Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of. the two sections of the smoke pipe or flue detached. Referring to the drawings, the numerals 10 and 11 constitute the wings of the present construction and as each oneis constructed similarly, the description of one will suffice for both. The'inner edge of thewings 10 and 11, as at 12 is rolled so that the side walls 13 and 1 1 of the fire placemay be hin'g'e'dly connected by the cooperation of the rolls l2 and 15, which are not only swinging connections but longitudinally slidable and nesting connections, so that each member is supported throughout its longitudinal length and is readily slid into or out of position.
The rear edge of each of the members 13 and 1 1 is provided with the longitudinal roll 16 for engaging the similarly constructed roll 1? of the rear Wall 18,,th'e rear wall 18 being so constructed as to longitudinally slide for disengagement from the side walls 13 and 14, when the present fire place is.
collapsed.
Each of the walls 13 andl l is constructed with the corrugated inner face 13 which terminates with the upper inclined edge 28 and the reduced end 29, the purpose of which will presently appear, there being located behind the corrugated walls of the respective members 13, 14, and 18, a layer 32 of heat insulating material, such as asbestos paper or the like.
The top 19 of the fire place, is provided with the upturned lip 20 for the reception of. thegroove 21 carried by the upper front plate 22 of the fire. place, there being a depending and guiding lip '23 formed upon the lower edge of such plate so as to assist in directing the smoke through the flue thimble 26 to the flue 27.
The upper extension of the wall 18 is provided with a flange 24 which provides a support for the; rear edge of the top 19, so that its flange 25 will cooperate therewith to hold the parts assembled as shown in Fig. 3.
' The flue 27, as shown in Fig. 5-, is constructed of two longitudinal nesting sections a and b, which in turn are provided with the cooperating longitudinally disposed interlocking hooks or terminals 0 and d.
These may be any shape. I I
The top 30, of the fire box, isadapted to fit upon the inclined edges 28 of the corrugated faces 18 of the side walls 13 and 14, the right angled'terminal 31 ofthe top 30 constituting a guide. I-
Carried by the wings 10' and 11, upon the rear face thereof, and also by the rear upper edge of the plate '22, are buttons 33 which are similar to the carriage top buttons, so
that the flaps or walls of the tent may be connected thereto and thus be held away lower portions of the wings 10 and 11, are
the cleats 34, which provide supports for the rectanguler bar 35 which in turn'is provided with the uprights 36, whichprevent the logs from rolling out into the tent.
The hinges 37 are connected to the rear of the bar 35 and thus hingedly connect the grate 38 thereto, so the same may assume the position as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 8, or,
when not in use, may be folded upwardly and coextensive with the members 36.
The rear wall 18 is provided with a longitudinal strip 39 which receives the rear. end
of the grate 38 as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, l0
and thus supports the grate at this portion. From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it ,is evident that a Ifire place constructed according thereto is especially adapted for use in army camps and for sportsmen, and provides a ready means for attachment to the wall of a tent, as it is only necessary to split up the two side walls hingedly connected to said member for projection from the rear side .thereoff'a' rear wall. constituting with the side walls the fire place, the same being slidably and hingedly connected to the rear edges of said side walls, a grate support attached to the rear walls, a hinged grate for fitting within the side walls and rear wall of thefire place, and a removable top wall for thefire place extending from the. rear wall to a point adjacent the'front of the fire place to provide a smoke outlet space adjacent thereto at the top of the fire place.
2. A collapsible fire place including a sectional front member having an opening,
two side walls hingedly connected to said member for projection from the rear side thereof, a rear wall constituting with said side walls afireplace, said rear wall being slidably and hingedly connected to the rear edges of said side walls, a grate support attached to the rear wall, a hinged grate for fitting within the side walls and rear Wall of the fire place,,an inclined removable top wall for the fire place extending from the rear wall to a point adjacent the front of the fire place to provide a smoke outletspace adjacent thereto at the .topof the fire place,
and a cover removably fitting upon the upper edge of therear wall and spaced from the top wall, said cover being also provided with aismoke outlet.
3. A collapsible fire place, including a sectional front member having an opening,
two side walls hingedly connected. to said member for'projection from the rear side ing rolled edges ofboth wings adjacent to thereof, a rear. wallconstituting with the side walls, thefireplace, the .same being slidably and hingedly connected to the rear edges-of saidv side walls, a gratesup'port attached to the rear wall, a hinged grate for fitting within the side walls and rear wall of the fire place, a removable topwall for the fire place extending from the rear wall to a point adjacent the front of the fire place to provide a smoke outlet space, a
cover removably' connected to the upper edge, of the rear wall ,at a-point above the top wall, said cover-being provided with a smoke outlet, and afine pipe for engaging saidsmoke outlet, -composed of. two longitudinal' nestingsections the meeting edges of which are provided with cooperating locking members.
4:. A collapsible fire place, including a front composed of two wings and a connecting plate between the upper ends of the wings to provide an opening in the lower part of the front, the inner edge of each wing being rolled throughout its length while the opposite shortedges of the connecting'plate is rolled to receive the rolled edge of the wings to detachably connect the plate and wings'together, and a fireplace 7 member detachably connected to the remainthe opening offthe front.
i a r 5. A collapsible fire place, including" a" front composed of two wings and a connecting plate between the upper ends of the r 1 v wings to provide an opening in the lower part. of the front, the inner. edgeof each wing being rolled throughout its length while the opposite'short edges of the-connecting plate is rolled to receive-therolled edge of the Wings to detaehably-connect the Y plate and wings together, a fire place member detachably connected to the remaining rolled edges of both wings adjacent to the opening of'the front, said fireplace including two side walls and a rear wall, a top for the fire placesupported between. the side and rear walls intermediateof the upper ends thereof and terminating at a point adjacent the front to provide a smokespace, I
a sheet of. metal constituting the cover for the fire place fitting upon the upper edges of the'side and rear walls and provided with a smoke outlet, a bar ,detachably connected nected to the bar for fire place.- W i Intestimony whereof I affix my signature.
