To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, OTTO J AEGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elkins Park, county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vending-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a art of this specification.

' The frame structure of the machine comprises base bars 2, standards 4, secured to and rising from the bars 2, and bars 5 connecting the standards 4.
Supported on horizontal bars 13, which are secured to and project from the standards 4 are two storage vessels 14 and 15 adapted to contain certain commodities,-
upper endsand valves 24 and 25 formed on their lower ends respectively. The valves 22 and 23 are adapted to seat against the walls of passages 26 and 27 formed on. the tops of the measuring vessels 16 and 17 to afford communication between the storage vessels. 14 and15 and the measuring chambers 18 and 19, respectively; and the valves 24 and 25 are adapted to, seat against the walls of passages-28 and 29 formed in the bottoms of the vessels 16 and 17 respectively, to permit the contents of the chambers 18 and 19 to be, discharged therefrom.
By mechanism hereinafter described, the valve members 20 quickly raised and thereafter quickly lowered to discharge the contents of the chambers 18 and 19 and to permit them to be reand 21 are adapted to be ing from a rockable shaft 36 which is passages 28 and 29, while the valves 22 and 23 prevent cream and coffee from entering the chambers 18 and 19 from the vessels 14 and 15. It-will thus be seen that measured quantities of cream and coffee may be successively discharged by raising and lowering the valve members 20 and 21.
When the cream and coffee are thus discharged from the receiving chambers 18 and 19 they are received within a trough 30 supported beneath the measuring vessels 16 and 17. The trough 30 has a discharge spout 31 and an inclined bottom leading to the spout 31, so that the cream and coffee entering the trough 30 will flow therefrom through the spout 31. Located beneath the spout31 is a floor or shelf 32 to receive and support a cup 33 beneath the spout 31 so that the cup 33 may receive the mixed cream and coffee which flows from the spout 31. v
I shall now describe the mechanism for raising and lowering the valve members 20 and 21 for the discharge of the measured quantities of cream and coffee.
The upper ends of the valve members 20 and 21 are connected to the lower ends of the chains 34, and the upper ends of the chains 34 are connected to arms 35 projectmounted to turn in brackets 37 on the machine frame. The arms 35 are adapted to turn on the shaft 36 under certain conditions and to turn with the shaft 36' under certain otherconditions, for purposes hereinafter explained, and, therefore, I provide pro- ' 'videfthe shaft 36 with pins 38 adapted to engage the shoulders 37 to turn the arms 35 with the shaft36 when it is turned in one direction, indicated by the arrow in Fig. 5, and to permit the shaft 36 to be turned in the reverse direction independently of the beveled or inclined at 41, oppositely to the Adjacent to the arms 35 are arms ends of the arms 39, as clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6; and the beveled ends of the arms 39 are adapted to be engaged by the lower ends of links 42 which have their upper ends pivoted, as at 43, to a bar 44 which connects the bearing brackets 37. The cam wheel 49 is secured to a shaft 50 ings on the machine frame; and the wheel 49 is provided with spaced, projecting cam teeth 51 having inclined faces 52 and formed as shown in the drawings.
The cam wheel 49 controls the valve members 20 and 21, and in the normal-position of the parts, one of the teeth 51 is in registry with the roller 47 and the rbller 47 rests against the outer face of the tooth.- When it is desired to move the valve members 20 I and 21 to discharge the contents of the chambers 18 and 19, the wheel 49 is turned in the direction of the arrow to bring the.
nextsucceeding tooth 51 into registry with the roller 47, and the following operation takes place: Immediately after the wheel drop, thereby permitting the weighted arm 46 to turn the shaft 36 and raise the arms 35 and 39 and cause the. arms 35 and chains 34 to quickly raise the valve members 20 and 21 until the valves 22 and 23 reach and engage their seats, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and thereby stop the further movement of the weighted arm 46, the arms 35 and 39 moving from the normal position shown in Fig. 5 to the position shown in Fig. 6. During this movement of the arms 35' and 39, the beveled ends 41 of the arms 35 move the lower ends of the links 42 outwardly until the bottoms of the free ends of the arms 35 are raised above the bottoms of the links 42 and the bottoms of'the links 42 pass by gravity beneath the ends ofthe'arm's, 35 and rest against the-beveled ends 40 of the arms 39, as shown in Fig. 6. The parts remain in this position until the next succeedingtooth 51 reaches the roller 47, and, during this time, the liquid is discharged 6 tothe position shown in'Fig. 5. As the arms 39 are thus lowered, the links 42 hold the arms 35 in the position shown in Fig. 6,
and thereby hold the . valves 22 and 23 closed, while tlre*pin's 38 move away from the shoulders 37 and, just before the arms 1 39 reach the position shown in Fig. 5, the.
beveled ends thereof engage the links 42 and move them outwardly from beneath the ends of the arms 35, freeing them and permitting them and the valve members 20 and 21 to drop instantly to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 5 and thereby quickly close the valves 24 and 25 and open the valves 22 and 23, leaving the parts in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 5for a succeeding operation. It will thus be seen that each time the wheel 49 is turned to move a tooth 51 from the 54 on a shaft 55 which is journaled in suitable bearings on the machine frame. The

shaft 55 carries a pinion 56 which is in mesh with a gear wheel 57 on a shaft 58 which turns in bearings on the upper portion of the machine frame. 'The shaft 58 is provided with a pair of sprocket wheels 59 over which the upper ends of a pair of verticallydisposed sprocket chains 60 pass and with which they are engaged. The member 73 is pivoted at 75, to a bracket 76 on the machine frame, and the arm 74 of the member 73 is pivoted thereto and ,held normally against a stop wall 76' thereon by the action. of a spring 77, one end of which is attached to the member 73 and the other end of which is attached to the arm 74. The purpose of pivoting the arm 74 to the mem- 'ber 73 will be hereinafter .described. Normally, the arm 74 is'engaged by a ratchet tooth 72, and is held against the stop wall 7 6 and thereby prevents the turning of the shaft 64 by the weight 63, and the location of the pivot of the member 73 with rela-. tion to the point of engagement of the arm 74 with the ratchet tooth 72 is such that the pressure of the tooth 72 against the arm 74 tends to move the arm 74 and member 73 from the position shown in Fig. 12 to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 13 to thereby release the ratchet wheel 71 from the arm 74 and permit the controlling shaft 64 and the cam Wheel 49 ;to be turned by the weight 63, and thereafter permit the member 73 to return by gravity to the osition shown in Fig. 12. The member 3 is held normally in the position shown in Fig. 12 by certain devices which will be presently described, and which are operative to release the member 73 and to reeng'age the same and again hold it in the position shown in Fig. 12, when it returns thereto by gravity. When the member 73 is released, the wei ht 63 isthereby permitted to turn the ratchet wheel 71, which, acting against the arm 74, moves the member 73 to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 13, whereupon the ratchet tooth 72 engaged with the arm 74 escapes the same, and, thereafter, the end of the arm 74 bears against the side of the ratchet tooth 72, as the member 73 tends by gravity to resume the position shown in Fig.
12. The sides of the teeth 72 are beveled or inclined, as shown to permit the arm 74 and member 73 to return to the position shown in Fig. 12, after the member 73 is operated to release each ratchet tooth 7 2. and before the next succeeding tooth. 7 2-reaches 80 to turn with the shaft when the shaft 69 the arm 74 to engage the same and prevent the further turning of the controlling shaft 64 and also the further turning of the cam wheel 49. The gearing between the controlling shaft 64 and the cam wheel 49 is such that each time the member 73 is operated to release the ratchet wheel 71 and permit it to turn a distance equal to the distance between two of its teeth 72, as just described, the weight 63 willbe permitted to turn the cam wheel 49 a distance equal to the distance between two of its teeth 51, for a liquid dispensing operation, as hereinbefore described.
To prevent the weight 63 from turning the ;cam wheel 49 too rapidly duringeach dispensing operation, I provide .a retarding means or governor, as follows: The shaft 69, hereinbefore referred to, has a ratchet wheel 78 secured thereon. which engages a pawl 79 carried by a" gear wheel 80 which is loosely mounted on the shaft 69, the pawl I 79 being pressed against the ratchet wheel 78 by a spring 81 carried by the wheel 80. The ratchet wheel 78 causes the 'gear wheel is turned in the direction of. the arrow under the influence of the weight 63 and the pawl 79 permits the shaft 69 to be turned in the reverse direction independently of the wheel 80, for .the purpose hereinafter explained. The gear wheel 80 is in mesh with a pinion 82 on a shaft 83 which turns in the bracket 70 and which carries a gear wheel 84. 'The gear wheel 84 is in mesh with a pinion 85 011 a'shaft 86 which turns in the bracket 70 and which has an outwardly projecting end carrying a fan '87, the rotation of which is resisted by'the surrounding air.- It will thus be seen that the fan 87 and the gearing between .it and the sprocket wheel- 68 will regulate and control the speed at which the weight 63 is permitted to turn the cam dispensing devices, and I shall now describe the coin operated devices for this purpose.
Formed in a wall 88 on the frame structure of the machine, adjacent to the shelf or support 32 for the cup 33 is a slot 89.for the reception of the check or coin 90 which is to operate the machine; and supported by the bracket 7 6 is'a receiver 91 which receives the coin 90 from the slot 89 and comprises an up- I per portion 92 which is inclined downwardly from a position below the slot 89, and a lower vertical portion 93 which extends downwardly from the lower end of the in'-" cline d portion-92 and forms a continuation thereof. This receiver 91 forms a guideway' adapted to maintain the opposite faces of the coin 90 in vertical position and to permit the coin to roll down through the inclined portion 92 and thereafter to descend by gravmy through and fall from the lower end of having an arm 97 which extends to a position immediately back of one end portion of the slot. 89. The end wall of the slot 89 opposite to the free end of the lever arm 97 is located with respect to said free end so that when a coin 90 of the proper dimensions is inserted into the slot 89, the coin 90 will engage the free end of the lever arm 97 and the opposing end wall of the slot 89 and move the lever 95 from the positionshown in Fig. 12 to the position shown in 13, whereupon thecoin 90 will escape the lever arm 97 and fall therefrom by gravity. The lever arm 96 is connected by a link 98 to an arm 99 which is pivoted, at 100, to the bracket 76 and which is adapted to be raised by the lever 95' from the position shown in Fig. 12 to the position shown in Fig. 13, when the coin 90 is inserted into the slot 89. Resting normally upon the arm 99 is the'free end of an arm 101 which is pivoted, at 102, to an extension on the bracket 76 and which is adapted to be raised from ,the position shown in Fig. 12 to the position shown in Fig. 13, when the arm 99 i's'raised as just described. The arm 101 is provided with a lateral projection 103 which is adapted to be engaged by the upper end of the member7 3 and prevent the movement'thereof by the ratchet wheel .71, as previously described, when the arm 101 is in the normal position shown in Fig. 12. When the arm 101-is raised to the position shown in Fig. 13, the projection 103 escapes the upper end of the member 73 and releases :the same. 7
When member 73 is thus released by the projection 103 the pressure of the ratchet wheel 71 against the arm 7-4 moves the member 73 from the position shown in Fig. 12 to the position shown by dotted lines in.
Fig. 13, and the projection 103 rests upon the member 73 and supports the arm 101 in a position midway between the positions shown in Figs. 12 and 13. while the lever arm 95 and the arm 99 drop back to the position shown in Fig. 12, independently of the arm 101. before the arm 74 escapes the tooth 72 of the ratchet wheel 71 with which it is engaged. and the further movement of'the member 73 is prevented by a pin 104 which is'engaged 108 which is fulcrumed, at 109, on. a pro- Jection' on the coin receiver 91, the other arm 110 of which is weighted to maintain the lever 108 normally in the position shown in Fig. 12.
The pin. 104 projects through the coin path in the lower end of the vertical portion 93 of the coin guide 91, so that a coin 90 descending through the portion 93 will strike the pin- 104 and thereby move the pin downwardly "from the tooth 105 asthe coin 90 escapes from the bottom of the coin guide 91. When the tooth 105 is thus released, the pressure of the ratchet .wheel 71 moves the member 73 to the position shown by full lines in Fig. 13 am the ratchet tooth 72 engaged with the. arm 74 escapes the same and permits the ratchet wheel 71 to turn 'under the influence of the weight 63 as previouslyv described. This done, the end of the arm' 74 bears against the side of the ratchet tooth 72, and the member 73 tends to return by gravity to the position shown in Fig. 12, while the 'pin 104 rests against the inclined bottom of the tooth 105 as the lever 110 tends to return it to its normal position shown in Fig. 12. When the side of the ratchet tooth 72 escapes the end of the arm 74, the member 73 returns by gravity to the normal position shown in Fig. 12. When the member 73 thus returns to the normal position, the pin 104 escapes from engagement with the bottom of the tooth 105 and returns toits normal position'shown in Fig. 12, and the upper end of the member 73 moves from beneath the projection 103 and permits the arm 101 to fall by gravity to its normal position shown in Fig. 12 and again lock the member 73 against movement by the ratchet wheel 71, before the next succeeding ratchet tooth 72 reaches .the arm. 74 so that when the said next succeeding tooth 72 reaches and engages the arm 74, it will stop further movement of the ratchet wheel 71 and controlling shaft 04 until the member 73 is again released from the arms 101 and 107 by the insertion of anothercoin 90 into the slot 89.-
It will thus be seen that each time a coin passes through the coin guide 91, a mixed quantity of cream and coffee will be .dis-' charged into the cup 33 placed upon the support 32 to receive it.
In order to prevent thedischarge of coffee from the spout 31 before a cup has been placed upon the shelf 32 to receive it, I pro-.
vide the following: Extending rearwardly from the position occupied by a cup 33 when placed upon the shelf 32 is a rod 111 which is mounted to slide in a wall 112, rising from the back of the shelf 32, and in a bracket 113 secured to the back of the wall 112. The
forward end of the rod 111 is provided with an abutment plate 114. adapted to be engaged by a cup 33; and the rod 111 is held Fig. 3 by a spring 115 one end of which is attached to the wall 112 and the other end of which is attached to a pin extending from the rod 111. When a cup 33 isplaced upon the shelf 32 beneath the spout 31 in the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3, the rod 111 is thereby pushed back against the action of the spring 115 to the position shown by dotted lines; and when the cup 33 is moved from the shelf 32, the spring 115 returns the rod 111 to the normal or full line position. I
Connected to the rod 111 is one arm 116 of a lever 117 which is fulcrumed, at 118, on a bracket 119 projecting from the wall 112. The lever arm 116 extends through'a slot in the rod 111 so that when the rod 111 is moved from the full line to the dotted line positions shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the lever 117 will be correspondingly moved. The arm 120 of the lever 117 has a cam' portion 121 adaptedto engage an arm 122 Which is pivoted at its lower end to the bracket 119.
The upper end of the arm 122 extends to and rests normally against one side of the inclmed portion 92 of the coin guide 91, and
. the upper end of the. arm 122 is provided from; and whenthe lever 117 is moved to the full line position, the arm 122 returns by gravity to its normal position, resting against the coin guide 91, and the pin 123 is returned to its normal position in the coin path. When the pin 1% is in the coin path, it operates to arrest the movement of a coin 90 rolling down the inclined portion 92 of the guide 91 and prevents-the coin 90 from reaching the vertical portion 93 of the "guide. When, however, the in 123 is withdrawn from the coin path, t e arrested'coin 90 ,will be liberated and will roll to and descend through the vertical portion 93 of the guide 91 and operate the lever 108 to release the member 73 for the discharge'of a cup of coffee from the spout 31, as previously explained.
From the construction just described, it v will be understood that if a cup 33 be placed upon the shelf 32 in the position shown in Fig. 3, before a coin is inserted into the slot 89, the cup 33 will engagethe plate1-l4 and by dotted lines, thereby moving the lever 117 to the position shown by dotted lines iii .push the rod 111 back to the position shown fore, when the coin 90 is inserted into the slot 89 it will be free to pass through the inclined portion 92 and vertical portion 93 of the coin guide 91 and-the machine will be operated, as previously described, to discharge a cup of coffee from the spout 31. If, however, the coin 90 is inserted into the slot 89 before a cup has been placed beneath the spout 31, the pin. 123 will arrest thev downward movement of the coin 90 through the coin guide 91 and prevent the coin from operating the 'coflee discharging devices, un- "til a cup is placed beneath the spout 31,
whereupon the arrested coin will be released and will then-operate the coffee discharging devices as previously explained. A
c To .raise the weight 63 after it has been lowered in operating the machine, I provide the controlling shaft 64 with an outwardly extending square end 125 ,for the reception of a suitable hand crank by means of which the shaft 64 may be turned. Wh'en it is desired tor'aise the weight 63, the crank is applied tothe shaft 64 and it is turned in the direction of the dotted line'arrow in Fig. 1, while the arm and roller 47 are held raised by hand to maintain them out of engagement with the cam wheel 49. This turning of the shaft" 64 operates the gearing between it and the chains 60. to raise the weight 63; and, during this operation, the pivoted arm 74.0f the member 73 springs past the teeth 72 of the ratchet wheel 71 without moving the member 73, and the pawl 79 permits the sprocket wheel '68 to turn independently of the gearing between it and the cam 87 which controls the s eed of the downward movement of the weight 63 when it operates the machine.
I claim: 1. In a vendmg machine, the combination lof a receiver for the commodity to be vendlease the gravity element, and mechanism' operative, by the descent of the gravity element whenreleased, to efiect a discharge of the commodity throughsaid opening.
2. In a vending machine, thecom'bination of a receiver for the commodity to be vended, said receiver having an open ng thereinfor the discharge of the commodity, a gravity element adapted to descend when released, means for supporting and guiding saidelement, a member normally preventing the descent of the gravity element, an abutment adjacent to said opening to be engaged i and moved from a normal position by a receptacle placed beneath said opening to receive the commodity, means operated by said abutment when moved from its normal position to operate said member to release the gravity element, and mechanism-operative,
by the descent of thegravity' element when I released, to effect a discharge of the commodity through said opening, said member and said abutment automatically returning to their normal positions when moved there-.

3. In a vending machine, the combination of a receiver for the commodity to be vended, saidreceiver having an opening therein for the discharge of the commodity, a gravity element adapted to descend when released, means for supporting and guld ng said element, a member normally preventing the descent of the. gravity element, a reciprocative abutment adjacent to said 'openmg to be engaged and moved from a normal position by a'receptacle placed beneath said opening to receive thecommodity, a spring to return said abutmentto said normal position after .being moved therefrom and released, a lever operated by said abutment when moved from said normal position, said lever, when operated, moving said member from its normal positionv and thereby releasingthe gravity element, and mechanism operative, by the descent of the gravity element when released, to. effect a discharge of the commodity through said opening.
4. In a vending machine, the combination of a receiver for thecommodity be 'vend ed, said recelver having an opening therem for the discharge of the commodity, a grav ity element adapted to descend when released, means for supportmgand gmdmg said element, a' pivoted member normally preventing the descent of the gravity element, a reciprocative abutment adjacent to said opening to be engaged and moved from a normal position by a receptacle placed beneath said opening to receive the commodity, a spring to return said-abutment to said normal position after being moved therefr'om' and released, a lever operated by said abutment when moved from said normal position, said lever, when operated,
moving said member from its normal posi-' tion and thereby releasing the gravity'element, and mechanism operat1ve,'by the descent of the gravity element when released,v
to effect a discharge of the commodity through said opening.
5. Ina vending machine, the combination of a receiver and discharge means for the commodity to be vended, means for controlling the discharge of said commodity comprising means normally urging the operation of. said discharge means, means rality of members disposed in the path of and successively engageable by said movable control element in'its movement from one position to another, said members operative, when actuated by said control element, to release said restraining means from said normally urged means.
6. 'In a vending machine, the combination of a receiverhaving a discharge opening for the commodity to be vended, movable means for opening and closing said discharge opening, means connected to said movable means and normally urging the movement thereof to open said discharge opening, means normally restraining said urging means, said restraining means com-' prising a pendulous member operative to move from its inactive position under the influence of said urging means to an antereleasingposition, means normally locking said pendulous member in its'normally inactive position, a, traveling element, means connected to said locking means and engageable by said traveling element for unlocking said pendulous member, whereby the latter is moved to its ante-releasing position, means normally obstructing further .movement of said pendulous member, said obstructing means operative upon engagement by sald traveling'element to relieve said pendulous member from saidobstructing means, means located intermediate of said unlocking means and said obstructing means for normally impeding the movement of said traveling element from the former to the latter, movable receptacle engaging means connected to said impeding means and operative upon theplacing of a receptacle adjacent said discharge opening to move said impeding means out of the path of said traveling "element whereby the latter engages the obstructing means, said pendu'lous member operative fupon' relief of said obstructing means to move to releasing position whereby said urging means is free to operate said mov able means for said opening for discharge of said commodity to said receptacle, and means for automatically restoring the ipartsto initial inactive positions.

In a bending machine provided with a receiver and a discharge means for the commodity to be vended, the combination of means for controlling said discharge-means con'iprising a weight actuated escapement means abnormally operative to operate said discharge means, a pendulous member in normal restraining engagement with said escapement means said escapement means normally urging said pendulous member toward mutual disengagement, means for normally locking said pendulous member in inactive position, independent means connected with said pendulous member for obstructing complete mutual disen gagement of said escapement means and said pendulous member after operation of said locking means, a gravity actuated traveling element, means for supporting and guiding said traveling element, means connected with said locking means operative upon engagement of said traveling element to first unlock said pendulous member, said pendulous member operative to move through a predetermined distance, impeding means projecting within said guiding means intermediate of the ends thereof in the path of said traveling element for normally impeding further movement of said traveling 1 element toward said obstructing means, said obstructing means located at the ,other end v of said guiding means, receptacle engaging .means connected to said impeding means and operative upon engagement by a receptacle placed adjacent said discharge means to move said impeding means out of the,
