Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VIGGO ANTON FRYIDENSBERG, 0F TISVILDELEJ E, DENMARK.
METHOD OF TREATING SEA-TANG.
N6 Drawing.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Vreoo ANTON FRYDENs- BERG, citizen of the Kingdom of Denmark, residing at Tisvildeleje, in the county of Sjalland and State of Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Treating Sea-Tang, of which the following is a specification.
The invention consists in a method of treating sea-tang, especially grasswrack (Zostera marina) to make the same fit for use as pulp in the paper manufacture instead of or together with the so called me chanical or chemical cellulose and for different other uses, for instance as addition to plaster, stucco and the like to strengthen the same.
To this end the fresh, moist sea-tang is exposed to the influence of chlorin or any other suitable bleaching agent, such as for example slaked lime or the like, which has the effect that the sea-tang becomes white or whitish-gray. Afterward it is dried in the air or artificially and finallyaccording to the use which is to he made of the materialrent asunder or crushed to a suitable degree of fineness.
According to the invention the treatment with chlorin, chlorid of lime and the like takes place, not as by the until now known methods of this sort so thoroughly that a separation of certain ingredients of the tang takes place; but the treatment is limited to the bleaching only, without any other special chemical influence on the tang being aimed at. It is hereby effected that the whole mass of tang can be applied in the paper manufacture and an application of the parts of the tang, which by the formerly Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 9, 1918.
Patented NOV. 18, 1919.
Serial No. 227,537.
known methods for the treatment of tang were separated as aresidual product of little use, becomes possible.
Instead of treating the sea-tang in fresh state one may also treat the tang after it has been dried and then moistened.
If chlorin is to be applied for the bleach ing this may suitably take place by arranging the sea-tang in thin layers, covered with chlorid of lime whereafter the tang is allowed to lie a short time under influence of this chemical.
By the application of sea-tang in the manufacture of for instance colored paper, stucco, pasteboard-pulp and the like, by which it is of no importance to obtain a white or very light product the sea-tang may with advantage be applied without any foregoing bleaching, as hereby a considerably stronger product is obtained.
Having now particularly described and ascertainedthe nature of my said invention I declare that what I claim is:
A method of treating sea tang to prepare it for paper manufacture and other uses consisting in first subjecting fresh or moistened sea tang t0 the action of a bleaching agent to a degree insuflicient to disorganize it or separate its elements and afterward drying and comminuting the bleached sea tang so that all parts of it may be available in the pulp.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VIGGO ANTON FRYDENSBERG.
