Be it known that we, ALEXANDER PEAGOCK and THOMAS HERBERT Hu ronmson, subjects of the King, of Great Britain, and residents of Wyrley Road, VVitton, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, and 64: Doidge road, Gravelly Hill, Birmingham aforesaid, respectively, have invented new and useful Improvements in Controllin Mechanism for Power-Presses and other Turposes; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptlon of the same. Our invention comprises improvements in controllling mechanism for power presses and other purposes which is so connected to the operative part of the press that the guard cannot be raised except when the press is stopped and held in its stopped condition; all being so arranged that the press stops after each cycle of operations on the part of the ram. In practice, owing to the fact that the press maybe required to pierce a number of articles from a single strip or iece of metal, it is undesirable and waste of time for the press to stop after each operation and the main object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the press may be set to function for a variable number of times according to the size of the strip to be fed into the machine and tothe number of pressings which it is requ red to produce from the one piece of metal.
More particularly the invention relates to that class of controlling device which includes a counting mechanism whereby the machine is stopped after it has functioned apredetermined number of tlmes.
The invention is-also applicable to a varietyof other purposes where it is required to stop the movement of mechanism at the end of a predetermined but variable number of movements.
Asapplied to a power press the'levcr may carry a guard and be connected to a plunger or bolt adapted to engage with the ram of the press; all in manner described in our prior British specification No. 2210i A. D. 1914:.

In carrying our invention into practice as illustrated upon the accompanying drawings the lever 1 is so arranged that when it is'raised above the horizontal the guard is lifted this guard 2 being shown as'carried by the said lever and the press locked in an inoperative position, while when the lever is loweredto a horizontal position the press is started, when it functions for one or more predetermined number of times according to the'setting of theselective mechanism,or under the influence of a personal control of the operator the press may function for an unlimited number of times without stopping.
The drivingclutch mayjbe conveniently normally engaged by a springiand thelever l carries mechanism whereby each time the lever is lowered the clutch is engaged and held in engagement until the press has functioned the predeterminednumber of times, a rod 3 being provided connected to the lever and clutch for this purpose. It will be understood that the clutch may be'of any suitable form and so connected to the lever that it is engaged when the lever is lowered; The lowering of the lever engages the clutch but the rising of the clutch control automatically releases the lever.
The controlling mechanism carried by the lever maybe broadly described as counting mechanismunder the influence of which the clutch is disengaged when the press has functioned the predetermined number of times, secondly means for setting the mech-.
anism so that the clutch is disengaged after each operation of the press,- and thirdly means whereby the clutch control maybe held inoperative ,by the operator so that the press may function for an unlimited number of times and in fact until the operator releases this particular control.
As previously stated, a spring is provided normally seeking. to release the clutch and a plunger 4. is mounted along the lever the extremity of which engages with a notch 5 on a clutch controlling member 6 connected to the rod 3 and serves to hold the clutch engaged, this plunger automatically engaging with the clutch control on the downward movement of the lever after it has been raised, the lowering of the lever thus bring ing down the clutch control.
The lever is provided with a pin 65 and the clutch control with a slot 66 so as. to permit the lever to be raised without a full corresponding movement of the clutch release, but this pin and slot merely serve to retain the part 6 in its requisite relation to the lever and does not provide an actuating connection. The plunger is advanced by a spring 67, but when the plunger isretracted the clutch control rises automatically. It will, however, be understood that the clutch control rises to a limited extent before the lever is released.
The ram or other movable part of the press carries or actuates a sliding member 7 having an incline S which may engage with the plunger 4: at each operation of the press so as to withdraw it from the clutch release, or may not withdraw it according to the setting of the other mechanism as hereinafter explained. This inclined member 7 slides up and down in a slot 9 in the plunger 4 and when it is required that the plunger shall be moved means areprovided in the form ofa block 10, free to slide along the lever which block engages with the opposite or back edge of the vertically sliding memher so that when the inclined part 8 engages the plunger 4t the plunger is withdrawn, but when the sliding block 10 is away from the vertically sliding member 7 the vertically sliding member is merely moved backwardly.

The means for bringing the sliding block 10 into position against the vertically sliding member 7 so as to cause the clutch mechanism to operate at each movement of the press preferably takes the form of a handle 11 pivoted upon the end of the lever at 12 and provided with a trigger 18 engaging with a slide 14; which is connected to a reciprocating member 15 behind the sliding block by means of the member 16, so that when the handle is in its normal position the sliding block is held against the vertically moving inclined member 7 causing the plunger 4 to move at each operation of the press.
The member 15 is adapted to move in a direction at right angles to the length of the that the clutch remains continually engaged.
The handle 11 is pivoted upon the end of the lever 1 at 12 while its lower end has an inclined slot 18 which engages a pin 19 in an extension 20 of the slide 14 so that depression of the handle will cause the slide to move away from the handle and toward the pivoted end of the lever. The pin 12 is shown as operating in a horizontal slot which is in the part 20 this pin permitting movement of said part 20 relatively to the lever and handle.
The supporting member 15 is in the form of a vertically moving slide having an inclined portion 24 or projection which lies immediately behind the sliding block 10, the vertically sliding member being, as previously stated, retracted by the handle. In addition to a movement in a direction corresponding with the length of the lever, the supporting member is movable at right angles to the length of the lever under the influence of a foot control 25, 26 so that when the foot control is depressed the incline 2-1 is drawn down from behind the sliding block, when the sliding block will then be retracted each time the machine functions instead of causing the plunger to move. By this means the machine may function for an unlimited number of times even when the handle is in its raised positlon so long as the operators foot is on the control, but this mechanism may be rendered inoperative by inserting a screw or abutment in the part 27 beneath the end 28 of the part 15. The member 15 is normally held up by the spring 27, which acts on the top of the guide block 27 which is fixed to the lever and serves as a guide for the plunger 4:.
The means for causng the plunger to be released and the machine stopped only at the end of a predetermined number of movements greater than one movement, may take the form of a ratchet wheel 31 mounted upon the main body of the machine and first pawl moves down again:

Carried by the spindle of the ratchet wheel is a lever 3a which is engaged by an abutment or collar 35 upon the aforementioned vertically reciprocating inclinedmember 7 so that each time the inclined member rises this lever 3 1 is lifted. Thislever carries a spring controlled pawl 36 engaging with the ratchet wheel so that each time the lever rises the ratchet wheel moves one tooth, a second pawl 37 being provided which retains theavheel in its adjusted position when the As stated, an adjustable stop 32 is provided which may take the form of a block screwed upon the side of the wheel which is set in the desired position upon the wheel, so that after the desired number of movements of the press have been made the stop will engage with a bell crank lever 88 carried by a part 38 secured to thelever 1, the bell crank lever being connected to the sliding block 10 by a link 39 so as to press such block against the rear of the aforementioned vertically reciprocating member 7, the connection between the block 10 and link39 being through the medium of a pin 40 and slot 41 so as to permit the sliding block to recede'when the bell crank lever is in its normal lowered position. By lowering or removing the part 35 the counting mechanism may be rendered inoperative and the machinecaused to function once only, or as long as permitted by the pedal 26,. p
Means are provided for automatically restoring the counting mechanism to Zero when the machine is stopped such means ineluding mechanism as pegs 43, 4-1- carried by the clutch'releasing member 6, so that whenever such clutch release is lowered to start the machine thepegs 43-, 4a engage with the two pawls and lift them clear of the ratchet wheel whichis then rotated backwardly under the influence of a chain 15 and weight 16 or spring, diagrammatically indicated at Figs. 2 and 3.
Thus the machine will function for a predetermined number of times according to the setting of the stop upon the ratchet wheel enabling the desirednumber of pressing operations. to be performed as may be required to complete the working of one strip of metal without requiring the machine to be stopped between each operation.
The clutch control 6 has an incline 57. which engages a peg 58 on looking the catch 55 when the clutch control rises and thus retracts the locking catch from engagement with the lever allowing the same to rise and retains the locking catch disengaged until the clutch control is again brought down;

As shown the plunger 4 passes through the sliding block 10 and reciprocating member 15 but each of these members is cut away so as to permit them to freely move at right angles to the said plunger while theplunger is cut away to permit the member 7 to pass through it; The connection between the members 15 and 16 is through the medium 'of a pinand slot 69 which permits the member 15- to rise and fall independently of the part 16.

Controlling mechanism for power presses and other purposes embodying in combination, a clutch control, a pivoted starting lever, a spring advanced plunger carried by the lever and adapted to engage with said clutch control, a reciprocating member actuated by a movable part of the press adapted to engage with said plunger, a block slidable along said lever, a pivoted handle on said lever, and means connecting said handle and sliding block so that when the handle is in one position the block is adjacent the reciprocating member and will thus cause the press to automatically stop after each operation while, when the handle is in another position, the block is retracted and the press will function for an indefinite number of times.

Controlling mechanism for power presses and other purposes embodying in combination, a clutch control, a pivoted starting lever, a spring advancedplunger carried by the lever and adapted to engage with said clutch control, a. reciprocating member actuated by a movable part of the press adapted to engage with said plunger, a block slidable along said lever, a pivoted handle on said lever, means connecting said handle and sliding block so that when the handle is in one position the block is adjacent the reciprocating member and will thus cause the press to automatically stop after each operation, while, when the handle is in another position, the block is retracted and the press will function for an indefinite num ber of times, and means for locking the handle in each or" its two positions.
21. Controlling mechanism for power presses and other purposes, embodying in combination, a clutch control, a pivoted starting lever, a spring advanced plunger carried by the lever and adapted to engage with said clutch control, a reciprocating member actuated by a movable part of the press adapted to engage with said plunger, a block slidable along said lever, a spring raised member immediately behind the sliding block, and a pedal connected to said spring raised member and adapted normally to cause the machine to stop after each operation, but when depressed to allow the m2: chine to function for an indefinite number of operations.

block slidable along said lever, a pivoted handle on said lever, means connecting said handle and sliding block so that when the handle is in one position the block is adja cent the reciprocating member and will thus cause the press to automatically stop after each operation, while, when the handle is in another position, the block is retracted and the press will function for an unlimited number of times, a spring raised member immediately behind the sliding block, and a. pedal connected to said spring raised member and adapted to normally cause the machine to stop after each operation, but when depressed to allow the machine to function for an indefinite number of operations.
