To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD E. BARDSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Center township, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compression-Bands, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a compression band, that is to say, to a device adapted to be mounted upon some other structure which is to be clamped, reinforced, or compressed. My invention is adapted to be embodied in a number of forms, for example, as a hose clamp, as a reinforcement for splices, as a retaining band for holding asbestos pipe covering in place, as a means for attaching the guide eyes on fishing rods, as a means of fastening the guy wires in aeroplane constructions, as a reinforcement for boxes, and for a multiplicity of other uses which it is needless to enumerate.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and etlicient compression band which may be readily and instantly put on or or taken off by squeezing a portion of the same in a vise or other suitable compressing tool, and which when mounted in position will provide an even pressure on all sides, and which is characterized by the absence of bolts, nuts, or other high protecting members.
The nature and characteristic features of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying draw ings forming part hereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational viewof a hose clamp embodying the main features of my present invention;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation thereof, the same being shown in position clamping a hose to a coupling member;
Fig. 1 is a modified form of the hose clamp shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the same being characterized by the provision of two compressible portions;
, Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing an additional means employed where the hose clamp is used on high pressure hose, this additional means beina provided to insure the maintenance of the clamping condition notwithstanding the high stresses which the same may be sub- Jected to;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing an embodiment of my invention for attaching a guide eye on a fishing rod;
Fig. 7 is a plan view showing an embodiment of my invention in a device for attaching the guy wires to an aeroplane strut, the aeroplane strut being shown in section;
Fig. 8 is a plan view of another embodiment of my invention, illustrating a separate compression portion which is provided with ears to which a strap iron is adapted to be connected, this form being adapted for use in clamping or holding asbestos on pipe or for other similar purposes;
Fig. 9 is a sectional view thereof showing the strap-iron in position with respect thereto;
Fig. 10 is a view similar to Fig. 8, but showing a modified form of the device shown in Fig. 8;
Fig. 11 is a longitudinal section of the device shown in Fig. 10, with the ends of the strap iron band shown in connection therewith; and
Fig. 12 is a perspective view illustrating the embodiment of my invention as a reinforcement for boxes, splices, or the like.
Referring now more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 of the drawings, my invention is there shown in a simple form, being embodied in a structure adapted for use as a clamp for attaching hose to the coupling members, etc. As there shown the device comprises an encircling. band 15 which is adapted to encircle the hose and clamp the same on the nipple of the coupling or other attachment. Interposed in the circumference of the encircling band 15 is a deformable ringlike portion 16, the axis of which is arranged transversely to the axis of the encircling band 15. The walls of the deformable member 16 are of such thickness as to permit'the same to be squeezed together to cause the same to assume a different contour and thereby shorten the girth of the encircling band 15, and yet being sufliciently strong to retain the deformed shape under the normal stress which the device is subjected in the shape assumed by the same when clamping the hose to the coupling or other member. such ringlike portions although it will of course be understood that any number of such deformable portions may be interposed in the circumference of the encircling band 15, the more of such deformable portions as are used the greater the extent of the constriction afforded.
It will also be readily understood that the thickness of the Walls of the deformable rink like portions 16 must be determined by not exceeding such thickness as will prevent the ready deformation of the same, and yet being sufliciently thick to retain the deformed shape and thus maintain the clamping action. In some instances it is possible that the Walls of the deformable portion may not be made sufficiently thick to main- .tain the clamping action, for example, where the device is used in connection with high pressure hose, and in such cases there may be. provided a wedge or bar 17, whlch may .be inserted in the long diameter of the aperture of the ring like portion 16 afterthe same has been squeezed in. position on the This wedge or bar 17 will eflectively maintain the deformed condition of the ring like portion 16 notwithstanding that the encircling band 15 may be subjected to a considerable stress. 7
' In Fig. 6 there is shown an embodiment of my invention in which. the same is used as a means for attaching the guide eyes upon fishing rods. For such purpose the structure. maybe substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, with the addition, that there is secured to the encircling band 15, either integrally or otherwise, a guide eye 18 through Which the fishing line is adapted to pass. It will be noted that this forms an exceedingly useful device in connection with fishing rods and -the like, on account of the facility with wvhrch the same may be mounted in place 55..

cations with connection eyes 21 to which the guy wires are adapted to be attached. It will be noted that this device provides an efficient and durable means for attaching the guy wires, which may be quickly and easily manipulated to secure the same in place at the desired locations.
\Vhere the circumference of the encircling band is relatively large, and the pres. sure to be applied relatively small, as occurs in compression bands which are used for securing asbestos or other similar coverings in place on pipes and the like, the device shown in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings is adaptable for use. In this form of 80 the invention the encircling band 15 is made of strap iron and the deformable portion is made as a separate piece comprising the ring like portion 16 which is provided with extending ears 22, each provided with two slots 23 through whichthe strap iron band 15 is laced, as clearly shown in Fig. 9 of the Fig. 10 illustrates a similar form of separate deformable member in which, however, one of the ears 24 is provided with rivet holes 25, whereby the strap iron encircling band 15 may be attached by means of rivets 26, and the other ear 27 may be provided with a slot 28 through which the free end of the encircling band 15 maybe passed and bent'over. i
In Fig. 12 of the drawings there is shown a form of the invention which is. adapted for use as areinforcement for boxes, splices or other similar square structures. In this instance the encompassing band 15 is made of the square conformation or any other polygonal shapeas may be required by the shape of the structure to which the same is attached. Where the encompassing band 15 is thus used on polygonal surfaces thereis preferably provided one of the deformable ring like portions on each of the straight extensions of the encompassing band 15, the same being provided so as to permit a uniformity of pressure on all sides of the structure which is encompassgd by the band 15. It will thus be. seen that there is provided a simple and efficient form of compression 11 band which may be readily and instantly at tached -ordetached from the structure in connection with whichit is desired to use the same. The operation is quite simple and apparent, it being only necessary to squeeze 1 the deformable ringlike portion in one direction to clamp the same to the structure with'which the; same is used, or to compress it in the other direction to release the same therefrom. And as before" stated the; device is adapted to be embodied in a multiplicity,
of forms for use wherever a compression band is required to be mounted upon a structure, and is adapted to be constricted thereon to clamp the same in place. Any suitable 13 tool may be used for deforming the ring like member, for example, an ordinary vise, of either hand or bench type is well adapted for this purpose.
Having thus described the nature and characteristic features of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the character described comprising an encompassing band having a deformable ring like portion interposed therein and adapted when said ring like portion is squeezed to vary the girth of said band.
2. A device of the character described comprisin an encompassing band having a deformab e ring like portion interposed therein and adapted when said rin like portion is squeezed to vary the girt of said band, said ring like portion having sides extending above the surface of the band adapted ico be engaged by a suitable compressing too 3. A device of the character described comprising an encompassing band having a plurality of deformable ring like portions interposed therein and adapted when said ring like portions are squeezed to vary the girth of said band.
4. A device of the character described comprising an encompassing band having a deformable ring like portion interposed therein and adapted when said ring like portion is squeezed to vary the girth of said band, and a bar inserted in the long diameter of said ring like portion when the same is mounted in place op the structure with which the device is used.
5. A device of the character described comprising an encompassin polygonal band having a deformable ring li e portion inter posed in each straight extension thereof and adapted when said ring like ortions are squeezed to vary the girth of said band.
