UNITED STATES LUTHER R. FAUGHT, OF PHILADELPHIA,'PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PULLEV-BELTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,205, dated October 15, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUTHER R. FAUGHT, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Belt for Pulleys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 shows my improved belt applied around two pulleys, and Figs 2, 3, and 4 show more particularly the construction of my belt.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The object of my invention is to improve round belts for pulleys by constructing a belt of leather strips plaited together, as will be hereinafter explained. v The following is a'description of my improvem ent In the accompanying drawing, A A represent two pulleys in section, having their peripheries grooved to receive a round belt, B. This belt is composed of several strands or thongs, 0 c, of leather braided together, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. These strands are so braided or plaited that a round belt is formed of uniform diameter throughout its entire length, and for the purpose of having the finished belt cylindrical and smooth each thong c is beveled on its edges, as shown by Fig. 4, Which'is a transverse section of one thong. These beveled edges allow the thongs to lie closely into the valleys between the braids and leave a very compact braid. The ends of this belt may be connected by screw-caps or sockets to a and a swivel-pin, b, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or any other suitable flexible connection may be adopted. This belt is free from the objections to the old belts. It is a system of universal joints which are very flexible, accommodatingto the peripheries of either the largest or smallest pulleys, requiring little or no loss of power to flex the joints while running on pulleys. It being made of separate strands or thongs, as explained, should there be a weak point in any of them, such point is strengthened and sustained by all the other strands; consequently the belt cannot bereduced in strength more than a fraction of the strength of the whole number of strands at the weak point, even if one strand is entirely void of strength.
In my belt there is an elasticity which allows the difierent strands to readily adjust themselves'to each other, and by running obliquely through and through the body of the belt which they form the strain is equally divided on all the strands.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The pulley-belt B, composed of leather strands braided substantially as described.
