Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. re, IQIQ.
Application filed February 13, 1918. Serial No. 216,956.
To aZZ wh0m it may concern:
Be 1t known that we, ARMANI) I-I. PEYGKE and lLoRnN L. WHITNEY, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and of Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Supporting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brake supporting mechanism.
It has for its object to level or support the brake beam in a simple and effective manner to meet the various requirements for successful commercial operation.
This and other objects are accomplished, generally speaking, by providing, in combi nation, a brake beam, a safety bar therefor, and a bracket supported by the safety bar and having a relatively sliding connection with the beam.
The invention is illustrated on the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a railway car truck embodying our invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation, parts being in section, of a portion' of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of part of the arrangement shown in Fig. 2.
The various novel features of our invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, it will be noted that we have disclosed a railway car truck, including a spring plank 10, to which are connected hangers 1-1 which support a horizontally extending rigid safety bar 12, the ends of which underlie brake beams 13 for the purpose of preventing such brake beams accidentally falling to the tracks in the event that the brake beams are severed from their normal hangings. In order to prevent the tension rod 14 of the brake beam from sagging downwardly, we have provided means for leveling or supporting the brake beam, and especially the tension rod 14 thereof. This means takes the form of a sprin bracket or arm 15 of general Z -shape (see ig. 2), one end 16 of which farm is secured in a supporting member 17, which preferably fits over and is connected to the safety bar 12 near the ends thereof. If desired, the support may be longitudinally adjustably connected to the safety rod' and longitudinally applied thereto-and removable therefrom. The outer free end 18 of the Z-shaped bracket or arm 15 is arranged preferably in a horizontal plane and underlies the tension rod 14 for supporting the latter, not only when it is at rest, but also during movements of the brake beam when the same are applied and released. The bracket member or arm 15, which preferably is of spring material, extends upwardly, inwardly and forwardly from the safety bar 12 toward the associated wheels of the truck. By means of this arrangement the safety bar not only performs its function of preventing the brake beam ccidentally from falling to the track when disconnected from its normal hangings, but also the brake beams are supported in proper position to accomplish satisfactory braking results.
It is our intention to cover any modifications of the invention falling within the spirit and scopeof the following claims.
We claim:
1. In combination, a brake beam, a safety bar therefor, a bracket connected to the safety bar for longitudinal adjustment thereon and having a horizontally extending p01" tion for supporting the brake beam.
2. In combination, a brake beam, a safety bar therefor, and a bracket member counected to the safety bar for longitudinal adjustment thereon and extending inwardly therefrom to slidably receive the brake beam for supporting the latter.
3. In combination, a brake beam having a tension member, a safety bar underlying said brake beam, and a bracket extending laterally inward from the safety bar and having a portion upon which the tension member of the beam may be slidably supported.
4. In combination, a brake beam, a rigid safety bar underlying the same, and a Z- shaped bracket supported by said safety bar and having a portion thereof extending laterally inward from the safety bar for normally sup orting the brake beam.
Signed at hicago, Illinois, this 2nd day of February, 1918.
