AUTOMATIC DEVICE FOR CONTROLLING ELEVATOR-IDOORS. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed. May 25, 1917. Serial No. 171,059.
To all lwhom t may concern Bc it known that I, GIUSEPPE ALrANo, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Automatic Devices for Controlling Elevator-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an automatic device for controlling elevator doors and the object is to provide means whereby the door of an elevator car or cage and the doors of a shaft may be controlled in one operation.
A further object is to provide for the cooperation of two sets of collapsible and sliding doors in a certain novel manner whereby the operation of one set in effecting the opening` movement will cause the operation of the other set by engagement between the meeting edges of the doors of the respective sets or pairs.
A still further object is to provide operating' and guiding means carried by the upper and lower portions of a car and eX- tending in opposite directions Y therefrom, adapted for engaging means carried by the cooperating doors of the shaft for opening and closing` said doors, and means whereby the Opbration of the doors named will cause the corresponding operation of the collapsible doors of tie cage.
A still further object is to provide a collapsible door of a type especially adapted for carrying out the purpose of this invention and for cooperation with a sliding door for closing the shaft opening.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the shaft doors and showing also the cage doors in front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the shaft doors in open position.
Fig. 3 is a front elevation showing the cage doors in open position.
Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are details of construction described below.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the shaft structure is designated 10' and the cage or car which may be of any suitable design or construction is shown at 12, this cage being' provided with a plurality o1' collapsible doors 13 and 14 for closing the front of the cage. The shaft opening is provided with sliding doors 15 and 16 and the doors last named are operated by certain devices carried by the car and projecting from the upper portion or roof of the car and from the lower portion.
The upper guiding and operating device comprises a triangular frame including channeled niembers 17 and 18, these members being deflected toward each other at their upper portionand provided with open ends 19 and 20, one wall of each channel being outwardly flared as shown at 21. A similar guiding and operating frame projects downwardly from the floor of the car and the channeled portions thereof are designated 23 and 24.
The sliding doors 15 and 16 each include the upper and lower bars 26 and 27, an outer vertical bar 28 and an inner vertical bar or rail 29 adapted to contact with the corresponding rail or bar of the opposite` door. These meeting bars or rails are each provided with guide engaging members designated 30 pro-vided with enlarged end portions or heads 31 which directly engage the channeled portions 17, 18, 23 and 24E carried by the cage. These members 30 extend laterally and then inwardly toward the doors of the cage and therefore toward the channeled members mentioned.
The door frame l2 comprises a plurality of upper and lower angle members connected lat their ends with vertically extending bars 413 and 441.
As the cage approachesv a floor, the engaging devices 30 pass into the ends 19 and 20 of the channeled guides 17 and 18, if the Car is moving upwardly, and if the car is moving in the opposite direction they pass within the converging portions of the channel members 23 and 24. Channels 17 and 23, or rather the inner flanges of said channels, are connected by means of a guiding bar 50, and a similar bar 51 is correspondingly located on the opposite side. As the car passes into a position for causing the floor thereof to come into a plane with the floor of the building at which it is desired to stop, the engaging devices 30 will pass from the channeled guides, the doors then beingin Vtheir open position, and said devices 30 will be further guided by means of the bars 50 and 51 above mentioned.
At the front portion ofthe cage and forming a portion of the upper framework thereof are a plurality of bars 55 and 56 constituting guides for the upper portion of the collapsible doors of the cage. The bars also Y the door-way.
Each collapsible door is connected with .an upright of the cage, one of these being designated 61 and having connection with bar 59 by means of a plurality of links. The centrally located bar 62 is provided with slots 63 and 64 each engaged by a headed pin`65 forming the pivotal connection between the links 66 and 67, these links being pivoted at their outer ends as indicated at 68 and 69, the first of these connections being with bar 59 and the other with bar 61. A similar set of links has connection with slot 64 of bar 62 and also has connection with bars 59 and 61. The links forming this connection are designated 70 and 71 and they v arefconnected'with links 66 and 67 by means of springs 72 and 73. yA plurality of vertical bars 74-and 75 are located as shown, one being on yeach side of bar 62 and these bars 74 and 75 are pivotally connected with bar 62 by means of linksrand they are respectively connectedwith bars 59 and 61. This link connection comprises link members 76, 77, 78, and 79 near the upper end of each door, and a similar connection is provided near the lower end of each door. There are therefore Vfour series of link connections between central bar 62 and the stationarybar 61 and slidable bar 59 forming one of. the meeting members of the pair of collapsible doors. n
'In Figs.' 1 and 2 the vertical elements 29, suitably braced, are shown as extending above and below the doors and the frame fl-2, in order that t-he cage doors may bc engaged in the manner indicated below, by elements 29, before the converging elements 17 and 18 on the cage have engaged and opened the landing doors 15 and 16.
The sliding doors 15 and 16 being operated by engagement with the converging channeled members previously described, the movement of said sliding doors is communicated to the collapsible doors in view of the broad flange member 60 extending outwardly and forming a portion of angle bar 59. This flange 60 and the vertical bar 29 on each sliding door are in engagen'lent, and the cage doors are therefore collapsed upon the movement of the sliding doors.
It may be added that the sliding doors 15 and 16 carry guiding devices 5 adapted to coperate with the upper and lower transverse members 6 and 7 of the frame 42.
What is claimed is:
1. In a device of the class described, a plurality of sliding doors for an elevator shaft, converging guiding members adapted to be carried by a cage, means carried by thc sliding doors engaging said converging members, a plurality of collapsible cage doors, means for operating the doors last named upon the movement of the sliding doors and devices constituting mounting means for the converging members and guiding means for the collapsible doors.
2. In a device of the class described, an elevator cage, a plurality of collapsible doors therefor each including a vertical member, means for guiding the latter when collapsing said doors, a plurality ofo link connections between said member, and a stationary portion of the cage, and means engaging said doors for collapsing the latter automatically.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
