METALLIC FRAME.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented NOV. 11, 1919.
Application filed September 30, 1915. Serial No. 53,231.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSCAR EMRIOH, a citizen of the United States, resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Frames;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to metal frames for windows and doorways.
The object of my invention is to provide a metal frame having parts sufficiently adjustable to allow of their being arranged and adjusted to offset the irregularities and out-of-plumb construction so often prevailing in walls where window or door framing is to be attached. A further important object of my invention is to effect a construction of frame wherein the finish or trim is secured without the use of rivets. For these purposes my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying two sheets of drawings, Figure 1- is a partly broken View, in elevation, showing a doorway and wall having my invention connected thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertically sectional view on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on line 33 of Fig. 1, with a door in position in the frame. Fig. 4: is an enlarged view of a portion of that shown in Fig. 3. Reference numerals in the followin specification refer to like parts in the drawings in which a wall 5 is represented having an opening or doorway at 6. A series of base members in the form of wall-embracing yokes or U straps 7 are secured to the wall 5 preferably by toggle bolts 8. Each of said U straps is adapted f to be variably arranged on the wall 5 so that the parts 7 of said U straps will protrude at points where depressions exist in the side-walls 5 to offset such depressions and to effect alinement with points of the side walls 5 that accord with the predetermined dimensions of the opening 6. Obviously the U straps may be arranged so that the parts 7 will be in alinement, each with the other, without regard to the sidewalls 5, and only with regard to the desired dimensions of the opening. Oppositely disposed holding devices consisting of angle irons 9, each of a length adapted to extend over the U straps alined at the sides or top of the doorway, at which it is positioned, and having slotted openings 9 therein, are
adjustably secured to any of the U straps at the sides and top of the doorway by the bolts 10 which extendthrough the slots 9 and carry the nut 10 and the washer 11. The adjustability of the angle irons is provided for by the slots 9 being made of a length sufficient to permit said angle irons to be moved at either end thereof upon the bolts 10, for the purpose of adjusting them transversely to the direction in which the U straps 7 are variably arranged, and effecting a true vertical alinement of the angle irons notwithstanding any out -of-plumb condition that may prevail in the plane of wall 5, after which the nut 10 is tightened against the washer 11 to maintain the angle irons in their adjusted positions. A jambcasing 12 fits over the angle irons and is secured thereto by clips 13 formed therefrom and pIOjeCting through suitable openings adjacently located in the jamb-casing and bent against the latter to hold it in position. On the opposite sides of the jamb-casing a trim 14 having a bent portion 14 formed lengthwise along the edge thereof is attached to the jamb-casing by the part 14: engaging a clip 15 formed on said jambcasing. Strips or anchor bars 16 are suitably secured at the ends 16 thereof to the angle irons 7 the other ends of said strips engaging openings at 17 in the trim 14: and projecting, as at 18, so as to be embedded in the plaster on the wall 5. The leg 20 of the hinge 20 is secured to the door 21; the other leg 20 of the hinge fitting in suitable openings formed in the jamb-casing is flush with said casing and is secured to the angle irons by the screws 22.
If a' transom is desired in connection with the door, a transom bar of any suitable construction may be attached to the frame in the well known way. It will be apparent that the adapting of the frame to accommodate a window sash involves merely the substitution of a suitable finish in place of the jam-casing. Obviously various modifications may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts herein shown without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In mechanism of the character set forth, the combination with base members and means for securing the same in different positions we wall and extending into an opening in such wall, of holding devices adjusta-bly mounted-on the base members,
and means for securing casing elements to said holding devices. V
2. In mechanism of the character set forth,
the combination "with base members and means for securing the same in diiferent posltlons to a wall and extending into an opening in such wall, of angle brackets hav ing certain, of their arms mounted. on the base'members and adjustable thereon trans- 'ver'sely of the wall opening, andmeans for securing casing elements the angle brackets. I
to the free arms of forth, the; combination with wall-embracing base yokes,.-of means for securing the legs tions of the holding devices.
of the yokes to opposite sides of a wall, with} the cross bars of such yokes in a wall opening, holding devices mounted on the cross bars ofthe yokes and adjustable. transversely of the opening, and-means for securing teasing elements to the projecting por- 5. In mechanism of the character set -forth,the combination with wall-embracing base-yokes, of means for securing the legs j of the yokesto opposite sides of a wall, with the cross bars of such yokes in a wall openin an le brackets havin certain of their arms adjustably mounted on the cross bars "-1 of the yokes and having their other arms overlying the legs of said yokes and adjust- "able' toward and from the same, and means for securing casing elements to the latter arms of the angle brackets.
6. In mechanism of the character set forth, the combination with base members and means for securing the same to a wall at an opening in such wall, of holding devices adjustably mounted on the base members, and means carried by the holding devices for engaging a casing element, said means having portions that project beyond the casing element for embedment in the plaster.
7. In mechanism of the character set forth, the combination with base members and means for securing the same to a Wall at an opening in such wall, of holding devices adjustably mounted on the base members and having casing-engaging hooks and casing-engaging bars carried by the holding devlces for engaging the casing, said bars projecting beyond the casing for embedment in plaster placed upon the Wall.
.8. In mechanism of the character set forth,'the combination with wall-embracing yokes, of means for securing the legs of the yokes to opposite sides of a wall, with the cross bars in an opening in such wall, angle brackets having certain of their legs adjustably mounted on the cross bars of the yokes and-having their other arms overlying the legs and adjustable toward and from the same, means carried by the latter arms for engagement With casing elements, and anchor bars secured to said latter arms for engagement with the rear portions of the casing elements, said bars having their ends adapted to be embedded in plaster applied to the wall.
In testimony whereof I, the said J OSCAR EMRIOH, have hereunto set my hand.
I J OSCAR EMRICH.
