JAR AND CLOSURE FOR SAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed June 13, 1917. Serial No. 174,501.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, PETER ELLIS, a subject of the King of England, and a resident of Stanley Bay, Auckland, New Zealand, have invented a new and Improved J ar and Closure for Same, of which the following V1s a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to preserving jars,
and has reference more particularly to the Fig. 4 is a plan view of the packing member; and
Fig. 5 is a modied structure of the jar.
Referring to the drawings, 6 is the jar, which has an outwardly-directed flange 7 presenting a flat, level surface at the mouth of the jar. The cover 8 has a cylindrical portion 9 fitting into the mouth of the jar, and an outwardly-flaring portion 10 from the cylindrical portion which presents ,a conical surface above the flange 7 of the jar. The angular relation between the facing surfaces of the cover and iiange forms an angle of about 30.
The jar 6 has bayonet grooves 11 on the inner surface thereof at the mouth. The cover is provided with projections 12 on the cylindrical portion which can be brought into the grooves to lock the cover to the jar. The cover is sealed to the jar by a packing 13 which is in the shape of an elongated member, one end of which is tapered as shown at 14. After locking the Cover to the jar, the tapered end of the packing is engaged in the V groove formed by the flange 7 and the cone portion 10 of the cover.l
By winding the packing member into the groove tightly, the cover is forced upwardly,
plan view of the jar withY 4the cover remove the motion of the same being limited bythe bayonet joint. A tight seal is formed be'- tween the cover and jar by a packing member wound therebetween, and at the same time the cover securely locked on the jar.
In the modified structure shown inFig. 5, the cover 15 fits over the mouth of the jar 16. The cover has an outwardly-directed iiange 17, while the jar has a tapering surface 18 forming with l the iiange a V groove similar to that formed by the iiange 7 and the conical portion 10 of the cover previously referred to. The packing member 19 in this case is identical with the packing member 13. .The locking of the cover to the jar is identical to that previously referred to.
By providinga V-shaped groove between lthe coverv and the jar it is possible to obtainl an air-tight joint by any packing, but particularly by a packing as described which is properly compressed.
I claim:
1. In combination, a jar having an outwardly extending flange presenting a flat upper surface and provided with bayonet grooves on its inner surface, a cover having a cylindrical portion fitting in the mouth of the jar and anl outwardly flaring portion extending from the cylindrical portion, said cylindrical portion having projections engagingk the grooves of the jar to lock the cover on the jar, and a packing strip having a tapering end and wound in the space between the flat upper face of the flange of the jar and the outwardly flaring portion of the cover, whereby the cover will be securely locked on the jar'and a tight seal formed between the cover andjar.
2. In combination, a jar having bayonet grooves on its inner surface, a Vcover having projections engaging the grooves of the jar, the jar and cover having external opposing surfaces, one of which is flaring and the other flat, and horizontal, and a packing strip having a tapering end and :wound between the surfaces, whereby the cover will be forced upwardly to hold it in locked engagement with the jar and a tight joint formed between the cover and jar.
PETER ELLIS.
