Specification uf Letters Patent.
Patent-eel Nov. ii., MMSE,
Application filed December 1, i916. Serial No.` 134,514.
i 0 all who/11.v t may concern.'
Be it J.niown that Lynn K. SxnLL, a. citizen of the United States, and resident of Detroit, lVayne county, State et liiirhig'au, have invented certain new anil useful improveniente in Motor-Vehicles, oi Whieli the following is a specification.
This invention relates to motor Vohirlos, and partieularly to built-up metallic. panel constructions esiLieri-ally adapted for use as veniele running boards.
Une of the objel'ts ot' this invention is llo provide a metallic. panel having; niaxinunn strength Wit-li a inininiuzn weight.
Another object is to `provide a nietallir panel which is simple in eonstruetion, eoni paratively inexpensive to manufacture and permits of an easy assembly oi' its various parte.
These and other objects will appear from the following description taken in connection with the ai:ooinpaiiyinodrawings. which form o. part of this specification. and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a motor vehicle frame with my inipro'vecl running board mounted thereon;
Fig. 2 is a plan. View with portions broken away of the assen'ibly illustrated in Fig. l;
3 is an enlarged transverse sectional View substantially on the line 3 3 ot1 Fig. 2; and t Fig. el is an enlarged longitudinal, trag-- nientairjY sectional View, substantially on the line ebbi Fig. 2.
Referring' to the orawiings 10 illustrates a chas frame sirvle member, io which hangor supporting irons 11. may be suitably secured vas by rivets 1 2 13, the construction oi which will be presentllifv deseribetl in clot may be arranged on the members l1, w tali fenders 14, and a splasher 15. suitably secured to the entls and a side, res. entirely.
The running boarcl 13,' Whit-h is or a built up metallir construetion, comprises a relatively rigid, unbenrlahle plate 1C, as ot baril cold rolled steel. On account of the thinnessof the late 1li. longitudinal tlf-:tendinir stitfening mon'ibers 17, oi" angular shape or channel section. are arranged longitudinally .of the plate 15, and secured to the lower A running board portions 20 suitablyv spot welded, or otherwise serured, at 21, to the under portion of tli plate lil. The enil anilsitle members 19, it will bo noted, forni an inner frame for the running board 13. Auy outer one-piece trarne being partially miterell` as at 22, is adapted to surround the inner traine members 19, and to be secured in position by strikingup itsI lower portion, as' at 33, and crimpingl down its up )er inwardly extending' vtlange 2i, after the insertion of :i matting' or rover preferably of cork orsixnilar material.
I A plurality of eonnortinzg;` pieces or brat-.liets 2G, ure adapted to lxai'e their {iauges 2G.
which are formed on v'forked arins 27, suit-v vmounted' on the supporting irons l1, by arranging'tho tlangetl portions 29,01 the stift'- eningnieinbors 17, which also forni spacers, on the web portion), of the supporting irons. it will be noted that the supporting irons are provided with slotsl7 through which xxi-ay be inserted bolts 32, and thread4 eil to the bosses 33, of the. brackets 2o. (if Courson suitable gasket 3%., may be arranged betrv'een the onrl of the bolt and the web 30,01? the supporting* irons i1. The rear end of the front fender and the forward end ot' the rear fender 14, may be suitably seeureil to the side of the runningr board` 13, as by bolts 35, and sparing eollar 36.
lVhilo have (leseribeii` and will specirally elaini what l leem to be a preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be obvious Yto those skilled in the art that various inollilieations and, changes may be ,made without departing` from the spirit and scope hereof. Having thus (leseribed in vinvention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters latont is:
1. ln a device of the rlass described` the combination with a metallic plate, a plurali angle irons extending iongiuflinfi ,y ani plete and having one their eeiine i'ianges suitably secured tlierelio, A1meireifinenfiloers suitably secured to lie nneide of said plate, a supporting member, for Cletaohably connecting sniil et to said supporting member, said is serving to stiiien said plate nucl io iii', from said supporting' iron.
ed device ei" ille class described, the nnion Wili i: ineiillie plate, n plie i gie irons extending longitudio" seul ,el and having; one of their in. Een siii ably secured lie aio,
bruelfe memln. sninbly secured io the im der eicle of Said plaine, a supporting mein-be means for fletziehably eoi'ineeiinp; bracket to seid supporting member, angie irons serving to stifien said plate nml to space it from said supporting member, end und side members of Channel or( 1-- tion having one of their respective Hangul portions Welded to said plate.
In combination, an iniiexible fiat ineoiiie, a iframe adapted to surround F seil plate, coin-pris seul of Cniinnei erf lim'- l p13-mien Welded te seni plate, oi malleable lll eers oi' elinnei crossseceion Welded to under sicle oi .ea-icl plate, connecting in bers suitfiiily seourec'l to ine under side o; said plete, n supper-"sing member, and ineens for iletnelmlily ,securing supportinginemlner io sid connectingmembers.

maine? transversely to said irons, said stil'eniiig members being Vadapted to rest on said transverse members, a plurality l of bifurcated connected members riveted to the under side of said plate, and means for detachably securing said connecting members TVith said supporting members.
9. In a motor vehicle, tlie combination with a side frame member, of a running board supported from said frame member and extending alongtbe side of tbe vehicle; and front and rear fenders, the inner ends of which are secured to the ends of said running board andl spacedslightly apart therefrom, said inner ends also being arranged in line with and forming continuationsof the said running board.
10. In a motor vehicle, the combination uvith the frame and body supported thereon, of a running board of reinforced sheet metal secured to the frame and* liaving iianged ends, front andrear fenders suitably supported and having the ends next said run- 4ning board suitably flanged, .bolts securing said slots, and arranged between the sidesI of said itl-shaped brackets, for Securing said ruiming board to said brackets.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
