SMOKE-HOOD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4., 1919.
Application filed August 23, 1918. Serial No. 251,149.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM W. GERLAOH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Smoke-Hood, of which the following is a specification.
The subject of the present invention 'is a smoke hood intended for attachment to stoves or furnaces.
The main object of the invention is the provision of a means for conducting away smoke or gas escaping from the door of a stove or furnace.
Another object of the invention is the provision of means for mounting the hood.
The invention also contemplates generally improving the construction and enhancing the utility of smoke hoods.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
A practical structure for carrying out the invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a furnace with a hoodbonstructed in accordance with the invention in place thereon;

Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, parts broken away;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference An ordinary furnace is indicated at 1, and it is provided with the usual smoke pipe 2. The furnace 1 has the usual opening adapted to be closed by the swinging door 3. Secured to the front of the furnace, immediately above the door 3, is the hood forming the subject of this invention.
The device consists of a hood 1 the walls of which converge upwardly, and the front wall 5 of which extends downwardly for a short distance below the rear wall 6. At the converged upper end of the walls of the hood is formed a square shoulder 7 the central aperture of which is surrounded by an upstanding annular flange 8, which is adapted to telescope within the end of an escape pipe 9, which pipe leads to the chimney (not shown). A damper 10 may be provided in the pipe 9 for the purpose of plegitiilating the draft through the pipe and Secured to the lower edge of the back plate 6 of the hood by means of bolts 11 or otherwise, is the flanged edge 11 of a plate 12. The plate 12 extends rearwardly from the hood 4, and has its rearward edge curved and formed with a depending flange 13, while the sides of the plate are downwardly bent to provide the side flanges 14L.
Secured by bolts 15 or otherwise to the lower edges of the sides of the hood 4 and to the flanges 14, are brackets 16 the rearward ends of which are bent outwardly and apertured to enter between the prongs of the bifurcated legs of T-heads or castings l7, and to receive the pins 18 by which the T-heads are adjustably secured to the brackets. The cross arms of the T-heads 17 are adapted to engage the wall of the furnace, and are apertured to receive tap screws or bolts 19, by which they are secured in place.
A gasket 20 of asbestos or other heat insulating substance is inserted between the wall of the furnace 1 and the flange 13 of the hood attached plate 12 to prevent radiation or conduction of heat to the hood.
In practice the device is connected to the furnace as shown, and the pipe 9 is led to the chimney flue. When the door of the furnace is opened, the smoke and gases which may escape therefrom are conducted by the draft passing up into the hood through the hood and pipe 9 to the chimney.
