w. WILLMOU. ART 0F STAMPING BOOK COVERS AND THE vLIKE. APPUCATION FILED APR. 16, 1919.
ag@ MWV G ME JN VETR www Www/@dg j WALTER tlvzrmliuorfr,4 or rononro, oN'rAnIc, camina ABT 0F STAMPING BOOK-COVERS AND THE LIKE,
To all whom. 125mg/ concern:
Be it knownvthat VI, WIILMo'rT of the city of Toronto, in thej4 count o York, Province of Ontario, Canada', ve invented certainnew and useful Im rovements in the Art of Stanpin? Bookl overs and the like, of which e allowingy isav specicatipn. .Thisjinentionrelates toa methed of proor de more economically than by the present method in which metal leaf is-employed. In producing stamped letter 4'or designs with metallic facing, the sur aces nn which the design is to' bestamped are sized or coated withf owdered resin or 'other' thermo-plastic adhesive.: Metal leaf is then laid over the parts and the design impressed with a het .dieper stamp. 'recess 1s ex p pensive `as.thel1aying ofthel caf in place takes considerable timela's als dees the re- ,moval of-Afthe surplus leaf the impression has beepl medef- Further', there' is, a great Wastepf 'the .inetal' leaf sinceV sheets. of leaf must .b'eu'sed `of' the extreme dimensions of the'de'sign," whereas the' actual area the the design is' usually very consid.-
Parts-,0f erably less thanthe area ofthe sheet of metal leaf employed. -4
Incarrying' out my process I use metallic powders and .use for each' impressionl only so much of the owder as is necessary to properly cver't e `impressed surfaces of the design. In carrying out my process I iirst slightly grease the dies or stamps and then apply .thereto a coating cfa metallic powder such, for example, as, ,ordlnary bronze powder. 4This may be eii'ecte'd by bringing the dies in contact-with a dat s urface on which the bronze powder is thinly spread.
The dies, which are heated in the ordin'iallner, are then brought into contact 'been suitably sized 'or powdered with resin orother thermo-plastic adhesive. Ae the rease on theV dies is only suiiicient to enable t ein to pick up the bronze powder, fbut not t0 permeate the powder l picked up, the powder readily transfers tothe surfaces of the design which are rendered sticky bythe heat ofthe dies.
The pressure employedn stamping the design gives the deposited' metallic a burnished surface equal t0 that 0 tained B'pecication of Letters Patent.'

with the bestleai. No diiculty is experienced with the slight greasing of the dies employed 'm Apicking` up enough powder'to completely. and evenly cover the surfaces of the design.'
The process may be carried out with many did'erenttforms of apparatus, a simple outfit heingsliown' in theagccompanying drawings 4in whiehduc'ing stamped or depressed giltletterig vof the work-carrying plate; and
F ig. v3 a side elevation, on the-same scale as Eig-2,. of partici' the press showing the work carrying' plate in position. f-In the drawings' like numerals of reference indicate'corresponding` parts in the different figures. u
In Fi 1" 1 is the movable platen or bed and 2 ie xed plate11`earrying the dies 3.
`The press is of ordinaryconstruction and will 4be provided with anysuitable .means rfor operating the movable platen 'and for heating the fixed platen to heatithefdies.
The case to be stampedis iitted'on a plate 4 provided with suitable stops 5 to position the case. The bed of the press .is provided with stops 6 to aid in positioning the plate 4 below the dies. The plate carries the counter dies '7 with which the dies 3 copeate. Along the front edge of the late L is 4l0- cated the absorbent pad 8 whic is saturated with oil or grease. A
The first step in the process iste draw the pad 8 vover the facesof the dies. A. plate carryin a thin la er of bronze powder is then p aced vinv the press and the ,diesl braucht into contact -with it. .The dies are thenrlifted -andf the" plate -l carrying" c. caseinserted in th press. An impression is then madeand the dies raised. When the plate 4 carryiri the stamped case is withdrawn by han to enable-the operator to 4remor'ethe finished case and' place a blank case in' position,.the pad 8 is drawn over the dies 'which greases them ready'ior the next operation. f
. With otherap aratus, the precise mode of' operation wou d be varied, butin every casethe sequence oi" operations of greesing the dies, applying powder thereto, and then making the impression will be adhered to.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A process for the purpose described which consists n slightly gre-(wing the, facu `of a dira; applying a, metallic powder thereto; und impressing with the die an impressiblo, sur-favo, with :1n adhesive.
2. A process for the purpose described which consists in slightlyy greusng the 'face of a. heated die; applying a mutalc powder tic adhsi ve.
