Description

L. M. BOYLE.
VEHICLE CARRIER.
APPucAnoN HLED MAR.4. 1919.
1 ,320,833. Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
n s'r'r LOUS 1VI. BOYLE, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
vEHroLE-CARRIER.
Application filed March 4, 1919. Serial No. 280,528.
To all ww'mv z't may Gomera:
Be it known that I, LOUIS M. BoYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Vehicle-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vehicle carriers, and more particularly to carriers for mounting upon a running-board or other structural part of automobiles for carying canteens or other liquid receptaoles. In ordinary practice, particularly in arid and waterless countries, it is customary to carry a canteen upon the running-board of an automobile, so that a plentiful supply of water for potation or for radiator cooling may be available between points at which fresh supply of water may be obtained. Such carriers as usually constructed are rigid in organization and merely support the canteen in fixed position, so that it may be withdrawn for use and then returned to the carrier to be again held in fixed or upright position.
In accordance with the present invention I provide a suitable carrier provided with a tilting or swinging or rocking frame adapted to receivethe canteen or other container, and provide means for fastening the canteen removably in place, and also locking means for normally maintaining the tilting frame in horizontal position or position of service; and I associate these locking means with the retaining or holding means, so that when the canteen or container is fastened in the carrier the looking means are rendered and maintained effective. Vhen the canteen is released the locking means automatically frees the tilting frame so that it can be tilted or tipped with the container, .to permit of decanting liquid without removing the canteen from, place. This is of great convenience in pouring out water or other liquid into a glass or` tumbler, or in washii'ig the hands in a stream :from the tilted container, and in many other instances. It obviates the necess'ity of lifting the canteen from the c'arrier, and as soon as the carrier is tilted back to uprght position and the retaining means are again rendered effective, the looking means likewise are again rendered effective to prevent tilting or tipping or rocking of the frame with the container until the retaining means and looking means are manip'ulated to release theroontainer frame.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented Nov. 4,- 1919.
.The invention has for its object to provlde an improved vehicle carrier of the kind mentloned which will be generally Superior 1 n effi'ciency and serviceability, taken in con- ]unction with relative inexpensiveness and slmplicity of construction and reliability and convenience in action and use, as well as durability and sightliness in appearance and which may be readily installed in pos1t1on or detached from the vehicle or its running-board. i
With the above and other objects in view, the lnventlon consists in the novel and useful provision, formation, construction, comblnation, association and inter-relation of parts, members and features, all aschereinafter desoribed, shown in the drawing, and finally pointed out in claims.
In the drawing:
Figur'e 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of an automobile showing the improved carrier, with the canteen, applied to the running board thereof,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail side elevation of the carrier in detached position, with the looking means effective;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the lookmg means inefective and the container frame tilted;
F ig. 4 is a fragmentary front elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 showing the looking means ineffective;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevation of a canteen or container which may be used in connection with the invention and showing the retaining member vapplied thereto, and
partially sectioned;
i'Fig. 7 is a fragmentary top plan view of part of the retaining means or member shown in Fig. 6; and,
Fig. 8 is an isometric view of the showing in Fig. 7.
Corresponding parts in all the figures are designated by the same reference characters.
Referring with, particularity to the drawing, A designates an imp-roved carrier shown as connected by clamps a with the running board B of an automobile C. The carriei' A comprises upright side members Z), rising from the clamps a, and held by the clamps, and threaded adjustableportions 9 thereof, firmly and securely to the running board. Between the tops of the side members, by pivotal connections 10 is su'spende'd a tilting or swinging or rocking or pivoted canteen or container c.
container frame member or basket c, which comprises Sbaced side bars 11 and end bars 12, and a downwardly bowed or looped bottom wall 13, such parts 11, 12 and 13 being formed and adapted to snugly receive and fit the canteen or other container c. A retaining member D is provided for the canteen or container, the same comprising a fieXible device or strap 14 secured at one end fiXedly to one of the upright members Z) of the fiXed frame portion and adapted to be applied to and releasably engaged with a slidable member d mounted in connection with the other upright frame member b so' as to slide up and down the same. To that end the member (Z may consist of a metallic plate having side clips or bent lugs 15 which slidably embrace the edges of the upright b, and an inwardly directed fixed lugl 16 which is received within an elongated slot 17 ranging upwardly and downwardly in the respective member b. The upper end of the plate of the member d is bowed outwardly, as at 17, and provided with a buckle device 18 adapted to receive the free end of the strap or retainer member 111 after the same has been passed over the top of the Between its ends the strap 1a is provided with a box-like device 19, having top walls 19fL and side walls 19h, but being open at the ends, and this device '19 is placed over a spout 20 of the canteen, and when the strap 11 is tightly fastened down by means of the buckle device 18 it securely and positively holds the canteen in place and prevents its being inadvertently reinoved from the tilting frame member c and likewise tcnds to effectively anchor and steady the canteen in such tilting frame member wherein it is held between and upon the parts 117 12 and 13. When the strap 111 is buckled down, it of course holds the lug` of the member (Z in raised' position, determined by the engagement of ,the lug 16 with the top end portion of the elongated slot 17, and the side lugs or clips -15 are held in engagement with the end bars 10 of the tilting frame 0 so as to prevent that frame from tilting or rocking, holding the frame and the eanteen in upright position. Vhen the strap 14 is freed from the buckle device 18, the member (Z of course drops, automatically releasing the tilting frame c from the looking action of the lugs 15, and the frame c may be tilted with the container so as to perinit of decanting the liquid therein. The box-like device 19 is of course freed from the spout 20 of the canteen, and the usual stopper may then be withdrawn to permit access to the contents of the container.
Itis obvious that many changes and variations may be inade in practising the invention, in departure from the disclosure of the foregoing description and the drawing,
all without departing from the true spirit of the invention.
Having thus disclosed my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
