SAMUEL H. DADDOW, OF ST. CLAIR, PENNSYLVANIA.
'IMPROVEMENT IN BLASTlNG-FUSESL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 32,061, dated October 8, 1872.
The design is to simplify the method and means of firing blasts and to make the operation of blasting more secure.
Figure 1 represents a string of any convenient size or material; Fig. 2 represents a narrow ribbon of paper, rolled copper, or any suitable material; Fig.3 represents the fuse in section, showing the construction; Fig. 4 represents the squib or fuse completed.
0 is the exterior of the squib or fuse-tube. G is the core containing powder or other suitable combustible. F is the ribbon of which the tube is made in any convenient manner. F is a covering of one or more ribbons folded spirally around the center tube. H is a string or thread of cotton or other suitable material used for the purpose of increasing the strength of the tube and securing the powder more firm- 1y. Passing through the core G is the string H, coated with mealed powder or any other suitable combustible, and inserted in the tribe (3 in connection with the powder 0, for the pur pose of quick and certain ignition and to coinmunicate lire with greater certainty to the cartridge. The interior diameter of the tube 0 is greater and contains more powder than ordinary blasting-fuses, and unlike the latter the tube or covering is not designed to burn.
To secure this end the tube or fuse O is coated with a composition of soluble glass or other suitable non-combustible water-proof adhesive material, which prevents the tube from burning or smouldering either before or after the discharge of the blast.
The soluble glass here used has a triple purpose, to wit: it is the adhesive agent, the water-proofing, and the fire-proofing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and which I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The fuse-tube O, constructed of paper and immersed in or coated with soluble glass, renderingit fire-proof and water-proof, in the manner and for the purpose specified.
SAMUEL HARRIES DADDOW.
