H ATT RN Y VICTOR J. CORNAGGIA, OF SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF" TO LOUIS I-L'LEIBE, OF SAN J OSE, CALIFOR1\TIA.
SANITARY-DRINKING-FOUNTAIN PROTECTOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 4, 1919.
Application filed September 23, 1918. 7 Serial No. 255,320.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR J. CORNAGGIA, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Santa Clara, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary-I)rinking-Fountain Protectors, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to a guard for drinking fountains of that type in which a quan city of water is projected upwardly through an orifice so that a drinker may imbibe the flowing water without recourse to a cup or similar receptacle.
The ordinary sanitary drinking fountain now grown so popular especially in public parks and semi-public grounds and buildings, and to some extent in private homes and gardens, consists of an ordinary glazed globular member provided with a discharge passage through which water under pressure is caused to play like a miniature fountain during the drinking process. 1
It is well known that in its practical application a drinking fountain of this kind is not as sanitary as it should be inasmuch as many individuals apply their mouths directly in contact with the globe so that a disease may be readily transmitted through this so-called sanitary fountain. Grown people and children have been seen to rub these fountains with dirty and perhaps diseased hands whereby germs may become lodged in the discharge orifice only to be taken into the system of some subsequent drinker. Also some easily accessible fountains, especially for children, are equally accessible to dogs which have been seen to lick that portion of the globe surrounding the discharge orifice.
These conditions are so well known that different methods have been devised for preventing a drinker from placing the mouth in contact with the globe but it is not known that any device has yet been devised that will not only prevent placing the mouth in contact with the fountain but will also prevent soiling the same by rubbing the hands over the top of the globular portion, and that can be readily fitted to drinking fountains already in use.
It is therefore, the object of the present invention to provide a device that can be readily attached to a drinking fountain and that, when in position, will prevent the placing of lips, tongues or hands upon that portion of the fountain surrounding the orifice therein.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel'and useful provision, formation, construction, and relative arrangement of parts, members and features, all as hereinafter described, shown in the drawings and finally pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings Figure'l is a perspective view of the preferred embodiment of my invention in position on a globular drinking fountain.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the device shown in position on a globular drinking fountain, a part of which is also shown in section.
Similar characters of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the globular head of a drinking fountain mounted on a tube 2 and having a discharge orifice 3 formed therein. At 4 is shown a member consisting of a section of a hollow sphere of the proper size to fit snugly upon head 1. In the center of member at and communicating with the exterior thereof, is an inwardly directed tube 5 threaded upon its free end to engage a similarly threaded portion of tube 2 as indicated at 6. Upon the outer surface of mem her 4 are formed or positioned a number of sharp spikes or spines as indicated at 7 It may now be seen that I have provided a device that can be adapted for use upon any form of drinking fountain and quickly attached thereto, and that will efficiently prevent soiling or contaminating the fountain by any of the means set forth.
It is understood, of course, that I do not wish to confine myself to the particular form of the invention herein shown and described but to include all forms, sizes, and shapes of the device and all methods of attachment as well as all forms, sizes and shapes of spikes or spines, that may be included within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A protector for the globular head of a drinking fountain, consisting of a body portion in the form of a section of a hollow sphere adapted to fit snugly upon the said globular head, having a plurality of out- Wardly projecting spikes or spines positioned on its outer surface and having an orificev formed 1n its center, and provided with a tube extending inwardly from said orifice adapted to be inserted into the discharge orifice of said globular head and threaded to engage a similarly threaded portion of said orifice in said head Executed this 18th day of September,
1918. VICTOR J. CORNAGGIA.
