' MILK-BOTTLE STOPPER.
Application filed June 16, 1919. Serial No. 304,505.
To all wkom it may concern: Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. SGHAGHT,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntington, in the county of Huntington and State of Indiana,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk- Bottle Stoppers; and I hereby declare that the, following is a' full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in milk bottle stopples, and provides a novel stopple intended for use primarily by housekeepers and vendors of milk to protect the milk re maining in a bottle after it has been partially emptied.
The novel stoppleis made in one piece, having a convex top and a convex bottom and provided with acircumferential flange that projects over the top edge of the bottle, and which flange has an ear preferably at one side which may be used as a lift or detachingdevice, and also to hang the stopple upon a nail when it is not in use.
I will explain the invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings,
which illustrates stopplesembodying the 1nvention as defined in the claims.

The stopple shown comprises a disk-like body 1 formed ofrubber or similar material and substantially corresponding in exterior diameter to the interior diameter of the mouth of the bottle with which it is to be used. On the under side of this disk-like portion 1 depends an annular cylindric portion 2, which is of less diameter than part 1,
and is adapted to fit closely within the mouth of the bottle, as indicated in Fig. 1, and to seat upon the usual neck 6 within the mouth of the bottle. The portion of disk 1 that projects beyond the part 2 forms a pcripheral flange 3 which rests upon the top of the neck of the bottle, as shown, and forms a close joint therewith and protects the top T of the bottle from objects falling thereon.
The bottom of the part 2 is concaved, as shown at 4, and'the top of the disk or stopple is convexed, as shown at '5.
The part 2 is made slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the shoulder b of the bottle neck; consequently, when the stopple is inserted in the bottle, the part 2 forms a close fit on and within such shoulder, and is slightly annularly contracted, thereby. Due to the concavity 4 of the inner or lower part of the stopple, this contraction increases the convexity 5 of the outer or upper part of the stopple.

The novel stopple is preferably provided atone side of theflange 3 with a laterally projecting ear 6 formed integral therewith; which ear may be used as a means for readily disengaging the stopple from the bottle and also as ameans for suspending it from a nail or hookwhen not in use. In the form Shown in Figs. 1 to 3. the ear 6is provided with an oblong'protuberance 7 .on its upper side which is perforated for the passage of a metal ring for eye 8 by which the stopple can be readily suspended from a nail or hook when detached from the bottle, Preferably. in order to strengthen the ear 6, it is reinforced by linen, canvas, or other suitable material indicated at 9, which is embedded in the stopple and ear during the molding of the stopple and vulcanizedtherein. Preferably, the reinforce 9 extends around the opening in the ear.
In the form shown in Figs. l and 5, the ear 6 is provided with an opening in which is secured a metal eyelet 10. This ear being provided with a reinforce 9, as indicated.
In the form shown in Figs. 6 and 7 the ear 6 has an opening 11 surrounded by a raised annular portiton 12 on the upper side of the ear, this portion 12 strengthening the ear around the opening; the car being reinforced as indicated. r
In the simple form shown in Figs. Sand 9, the ear 6 has an opening or eye 11. If desired, a ring 13 may be engaged with the opening 11, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 9.
In each instance the main body of the stopple is constructed as described, the variations being in the ears, and in the provision for suspending the stopple by the ear. The reinforce enhances the durability of the ear and flange and will prevent the opening or eye tearing out when the stopple is hung on a nail or hook.
The principal novel features of the stopple are the peculiarly shaped concave-convex body portions .Z'and 1. range the ear 6 at the slde andradially of I preferably arthe stopple, as stated; but in some cases the ear could be omitted or other provlslon made for suspending or detaching the stopple, the
essential features ofthe body portions thereof being preserved.
As stated, the stopple is intended to be used to cover the milk bottle after the ordinary paper cap is removed and the bottle has been partially emptied of its contents.
The novel stopple being made integrally out of one piece of rubber, with convex top, rounded central portion and projecting lip, all droppings and foreign materials will run off the stopple, and not adhere thereto.
As the part 2 fits closely on the inside of the bottle and the flange 3 covers the top edge of the bottle, dust and air are effectually excluded; the stopple affords no lodg ment for germs; and makes an airtight, sanitary closure.

2. An integral stopple comprising a circular disk-like upper portion adapted to cover the mouth of a bottle, and a short depending cylindric portion of much greater Width than depth adapted to fit within the mouth of a milk bottle and seat upon the shoulder thereof; the cylindric portion being concave on its under side and the disk convex on its top side; the outerpart of the upper portion projecting beyond the depending portion as a fiat peripheral flange adapted to rest on the top of the mouth of the bottle and said depending portion being of slightly greater diameter than the inner diameter of the shoulder of the bottle; whereby when the stopple is inserted in the bottle the depending portion is contracted and its concavity increased and the convexity of the top of the disk portion also increased; said disk portion having an integral laterally projecting ear extending radially therefrom whereby the stopple may be readily detached from a bottle.
