lowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to furnace doors, and more particularly the doors of hardening, carbonizing or other heat treating furnaces.
In the operation of heat treating furnaces, it is practically impossible to maintain a uniform heat throughout the furnace, as the various flues, air chambers, and conduits tend to withdraw heated air from the front end of the furnace, consequently there is a comparatively cool place adjacent the furnace door and should material be positioned there, the treatment is not as thorough as in the rear part of the furnace. A pyrometer in the front part of the furnace will show a different temperature from the pyrometer in the rear part of the furnace, and to obviate this and insure a uniform temperature throughout the furnace, I provide a special door that has flues for producing a draft toward. the front end of the furnace and by regulating the draft a uniform temperature can be maintained.

As showing the use of my improved furnace door, a conventional form of heat treating furnace has been shown as having a re The door shell, as well as the lining ther in, may be convexo-concave in horizontal section and the door shell may be reinforced by transverse ribs 9, and a plurality of vertical channel ribs 10, said channel ribs receiving the lining 8 and providing clearance for vertical flues 11 formed in the lining 8 or provided thereby particularly when constructing the lining of fire brick. The vertical flues 11 have the lower ends thereof opening into the doorway 2, as indicated at 12, and the upper ends of said flues communicate with lined auxiliary stacks 13 on the upper edge of the door, said stacks having metallic shells and linings of the same material as the door shell 7. The auxiliary stacks 13 cooperate with the lines 11 of the door in producing up drafts somewhat simi lar to the main stack of the furnace, and in consequence of the main and auxiliary stacks the heat units are equally distributed throughout the furnace, particularly at the ends thereof, thereby insuring a distribution of the heat-throughout the furnace,

without having one part of the receiving chamber 1 or doorway 2 of a different temperature from other parts thereof.
The auxiliary stacks 13 extend above the top of the furnace and may have the upper ends thereof provided with dampers 14: which may be adjusted by a suitable mechanism 15 extending to the door proper so as to be conveniently operated. The dampers 14 permit of the draft in the door and auxiliary stacks being properly regulated so that a heat treating process can be uniformly carried on in any part of the receiving chamber 1 of the furnace. Any suitable means may be employed for raism'g, lowering or otherwise moving the door of the furnace, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural ele ments entering into the construction of the door may be varied or changed without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A furnace door having vertical flues adapted to communicate with the interior of a furnace, and adjustable dampers at the upper ends of said flues.
2. A furnace door having flues adapted to communicate with the interior of a furnace, auxiliary stacks on said door communicating with the flues thereof, and adjustable dampers, at the upper ends of said stacks and adapted to be adjusted in front of said door.
3. The combination of a furnace having a doorway, of a door for said doorway adapted to establish an up draft at said doorway and means carried by said door adapted for regulating the draft.
4. The combination of a furnace having a doorway, a main stack atone end of said furnace, an auxiliary stack at the opposite end of said furnace, and means supporting said auxiliary stack permitting of access being had to said doorway.
5. The combination of a furnace having 15 a doorway, a slida'ble door therefor, said door having a plurality of fines therein with FREDERICK J. GGODENOW.
