To aZZwz/om itmay 'con-cern.' i .Beit knoivnfthat I, CATHERINE LAUGH-LIN, afcitizen'. of the United States, re-
sidingatl NewYork, inthe fc'ounty of New York and--StateofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inl Attachments` for Gas-Burners, of Vwhiclr the 1J 'lhis invention` relatesfto an improvement in attachments for gas-stoveburners.`
.Y -To this endv the, invention contemplates-a no'veland `practica-l -devicelwhich will not only cause the proper mixing Vof gas 'and "air but also effectively distribute the heat `generated by the burner, thereby utilizing Vthe caloric efficiency of theburnerl -fla-me to a maximum degree.- That isto-say, theinvention proposes to provide an attachment which 4 may be readily littedrto an `ordi-nary`A gas burner to evenly disperse the flame and' also assistin causing a more thorough mixing 'of the air and gas which will insure perfect combustion with the result of -increasing the intensity of heat, and at the same time eliminate objectionable and dangerous odors.
Nith the above and other objects in view which Vwill more readily appear as the nature of the inventionis better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed.
A preferredand practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying` drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the attachment.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawing.
In carrying the present invention into effect it is proposed to utilize a flat plate or disk 1 provided with a plurality of openings having a novel'relation and arrangementto effect a proper distribution or dispersion of the heat. That is to say, it is proposed to provide the metal burner-plate or disk 1 with a plurality of openings 2 which may be conveniently arranged in a plurality of series of circles bearing concentric rela tion, the said openings of each series gradually increasingin diameter from the cen- T; MC-.
LETAQHMENT' roneAsBURNEns.
.i Sreccetiqn 0f Lettersletent, Patented 0613,28, 1919. `Apvplicatiionfiled February26, 1919. Serial 1\o.`27.9,254`.` i
present invention is the provision of a. heat;
distributing burner plate having a plurality of openings-,or perforations.which are of:
progressively. increasing diameter between theaxis rof the plate andthe outer edge thereof.- `Thus the` central vportion of the plate containsopenings ofrelaltively small diam-V eter while those .ofthe largestv "diameter are .located .adjacent .ther outer edge portion.
This structure causes;` the heating llame to be diverted or `dispersed(uniformly overl the entirefsurface-` of the disk, and `prevents the. concentration. of i heat at any `one point, with the resulting destructive effect on cooking utensils; V
Byreference' to the drawing it will be furtherobserved that it is proposed to mount the heating plate 0r disk l upon suitable supporting blades 3, which are radially disposed with reference to the axis of the disk, and may be of any desired length, say from one to three inches as the requirements of the burner plate demand. Although the blades are shown as beginning a short distance from the center of the plate, they may start closer to the Acenter and at all events are particularly designed and intended to rest upon the usual gas burner B, whereby the plate 1 will be spaced a proper distance above the openings in the burner, and provide in eifect a plurality of relatively large mixing chambers for the gas and air, which not only insures proper mixing thereof but also draws considerably more air than gas Vinto the llame after the burner starts.
,In addition to serving as supports for the disk the blades serve as baffles to distribute the llame in the space between the disk and the burner to assist the injector action of the burner. That is to say, the special arrangement of the blades 3 is such that they both distribute the flame and support the plate 1 whereby the pressure of gas is increased very materially by the suction that is created by the flame passing through the openings 2 and between the blades. Thus, the operation of the burner insures considerably more air being burned than would be otherwise possible because the heat of the burner late, and the flame pushing between the blades and through the multiplicity of openings will cause a suction whereby a relatively great volume of air will be drawn in from the free and unobstructed sides of the plate to be used in increasing the intensity of the flame.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides an attachment including a perforate Vburner plateV which not only uniformly distributes the heat from the usual gas burner, but also provides a more intense heating flame by reason of the fact that the pressure created by the flame-jets issuing from the usual burner is materially increased by the passage of the flame between the blades and through the multiplicity of openings in the burner plate. In other words the tongues of flame being projected through the openings 2 have an injector effect which causes Va much greater heating eciency from a smaller quantity 0f gas because a vpreponderant amountv of Vair is utilized in forming the proper mixture for the flame.r
Another novel and distinctive feature of the invention is that of providing the center of the plate with small openings where the;
flame is likely to be the hottest, while the outer portions of the plate areV lprovided with larger openings to equalize the heating effect of the flame. i y
Without furtherdescription it is thought that the features and advantages of the present invention will be readily apparent.
I claim Y An attachment for gas burners comprisi ing in combination with the burner, a burner plate having a plurality of graduated open- Y In testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
