Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo AMBROSE IBARNABY, OF ITHACA, NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 1,320, dated September 10, 1839.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMBRosE BARNABY, of Ithaca, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction ot'Double Mold-Board Plows, by which I am enabled to use either as a landside, the beam revolving on the standard-bolt attaching it to the double mold-board, and secured behind, between the handles, by a hook or holdt'ast sliding into grooves formed on the middle cross-piece for that purpose.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.
Two mold-boards having the same curvatures are secured together by any of the usual methods. That which I have used generally is to cast one wing, Figure 1, B, separate, and bolt it onto a ange projecting from the -cuttingedge or standard, forming a surface flush or even with said standard, as represented in the drawings by a curved line parallel with the cutting-edge. A colter, E, is secured in front ot' this edge bya clasp round the top of the standard, with a stay at a short distance below it to keep the colter at a proper distance in advance of it.. This colter does not pass through the beam, nor is it connected with it in any way.
The standard-bolt F serves as a pivot for the beam A, enabling it to play tothe right or left atpleasure. At the back end of the beam asocket, H, is tiited tightly, having a horizon tal hole through its sides to admit a pin, which is to serve as a pivot for a vertical hook or holdfast, I, to play backward or forward in a hole through this end ot' the beam, made for the purpose. This holdt'ast is shaped like a thumb-latch at the top, and forms a hook below the pivot, turning toward the liront, intended to traverse upon the middle cross-piece, G, between the handles, and drop into a groove formed at each extremityr of this erosspiece to limit the motion of the beam should it be turned to the right or left, as occasion may require. A Hat spring behind the holdfast is used to force it into the groove at the proper time, and the application of the foot or hand releases it whenever the beamis to change its direction. The middle crosspiece has its upper edge made horizontally for the beam to rest upon, and the back or grooved side forms a segment of a circle drawn from the standardbolt asa center. This edge is lined with a plate of metal to secure it and the groove from wear. Fig. 2 represents a section "or back view ot the middle cross-piece, G, and holdfast H.
The share O is of that kind which tits into a recess on the upper part ot1 the mold-board and secured by'bolts. The peculiarity ot` mine is that it has a fork shape and forms a double share, as represented in the drawings at O, to lit on both boards, which strengthens them, the point serving for either.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The mode of changing a double moldboard plow to serve either as a right or let't handed one, for hillside and other purposes, by shifting the beam and securing it on the crosspiece, as herein described.
2. The attaching the colter to the upright standard or cuttingedge ofthe mold-board by means of the clasp and stay instead of the beam, as above set forth.
AMBROSE BARNABY.
