Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 15, 1919. Serial No. 271,297.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. SCHNEIDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeport, in the county of Lake and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Cover-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cover lock.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple, substantial and cheaply manufactured cover lock for commutator timers and the like, which may be quickly and easily removed with a pair of pliers, thereby rendering the interior mechanism quickly and readily accessible for inspection, repairs or otherwise.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cover lock which exerts a constant and even pressure on the cover and which permits turning movement of the cover with relation to the locking arm to advance or retard the spark when used on commutators.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cover which is self-centering with relation to its support and the locking arm, and furthermore, a cover which is entirely removable with relation to its support and rattle-proofwhen in position. Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a commutator or timer, partly broken away, showing the application of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan'view of Fig. 1, said figure being partly broken away to show the cover groove.
Referring to the drawings in detail, A indicates the base member of the commutator on which is formed a bearing 2 for the reception of the commutator shaft 3. The base member serves as a support for a case or cover 4 and also for the roller arm and the brush, together with the usual mechanism carried by the commutator shaft, said partsbeing positioned within the cover.
One of the main purposes of the present invention is to provide a case or cover lock which is quickly and easily removable to permit the cover to be removed to inspect or repair the interior mechanism carried by the commutator shaft. This is accomplished inthe following manner: Formed on one side of the base member A is a pair of interspaced hook-shaped lugs 5. Formed on the opposite side of the base in 'alinement with said lugs, is apair of perforated lugs 6. Adapted to straddle the case or cover 4t and engage the lugs 5 and 6, is a locking arm 7. The arm employed in the present instance may be termed V-shaped. The shape employed should conform as much as possible to the exterior contour of the cover 1. For removably securing the locking arm with relation to the lugs 5 and 6, a pair of pins 8 and 9 are employed. The pin 8 is rigidly secured in the locking arm while the pin shown at 9, in this instance a cotter-pin, is intended to be inserted through the perforated lugs 6 and an opening formed in the locking arm.
In actual operation, when applying the locking member, it is first necessary to pass the pivoting end 10 of the locking arm between the lugs 5 and lift it in an upward direction so that the pin will engage the hookshaped lugs. The levers are then swung downwardly in the direction of arrow a by means of a handle extension 11 until its free end passes between the lugs 6. The opening 9 will then register with the perforations formed in said lugs and it is thus possible to insert the cotter-pinand secure the lever against removal.
The upper portion of the cover 4: is recessed as at 12, for the reception of a downwardly projecting securing lug 13. This lug is formed on the center portion of the locking arm and exerts just sufiicient pressure to maintain the cover in position on the base, the cover being furthermore centered by forming an annular recess or groove 14 in the base.
A locking arm constructed as here shown is not only simple and substantiall in construction but it can be quickly removed or replaced with a pair of pliers as it is only necessary to remove the cotter-pin 9 when releasing the lever. The case or cover 4 may thus be readily removed to permit inspection or repair of the interior mechanism. The securing lug 13 engages the upper central portion of the cover and it therefore permits the timer connection shown at 16 to be employed and the cover to be turned approximately 90 without interfering or con tacting with the locking lever.

cover portion carries the thumb-nuts with connected contact points and it also carries the timer connection and the oiler 17. The interior mechanism of the commutator, such as the roller arm, brush, springs and contact points are not here shown as they do not form any part of the present invention, the invention being limited in the present instance to the locking arm and the means formed on the base for securing and centering the same.
\Vhile the locking arm and cover are here shown as employed in connection with the commutator or timer, I wish it understood that it may be used for different purposes. Similarly, that the materials and finish and the shape of the several parts employed may be such as the experience and judgment of the manufacturer may dictate.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination in an automobile timer of a base having an annular groove near the periphery, a conical cover having a circular flange adapted to fit the groove and guide the cover when rotated, a central Socket in the top of the cover, a yoke shaped to arch above and out of contact with the cover, a point projecting downwardly from the center of the yoke, adapted to project into the socket formed in the cover, and detachable means by which the yoke ends are secured to opposite sides of the base.
