. a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illino1s,'have invented'new and useful I mproveim'snts in Electric Regulators, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to electric re lators.
ore particularly the invention relatw to that class of electrlc regulators using a comprovide a regulator of the compressible pile pressible pile as the variable resistance element. One diihculty with this type of regulater, as they have hitherto been constructed, is. that it is diilicult to reduce the resistance of the compressible pile to a minimum and still maintain a wide range of regulation.
An object of the present invention is to e in which a maximum compression force w1ll be exerted upon the pile when it is desired to reduce the resistance of said pile to a minimumand whereby smooth and ac-.
curate regulation of wide range may be secured.

In the embodiment illustrated, a pair of compressible piles 1, 2. are provided. These piles are arranged with their longitudinal axes parallel and are preferably of substantially the same dimensions. A yoke 3 is provided at each end of the piles 1, 2, each of which yokes is adapted to be operated by a lever 4. Each of the levers 4, 4, is pivoted at the'point 5 and has pivotal connection with its corresponding yoke 3. preferably by means of a socket joint 6. The levers 4, 4, are normally urged toward one another by means of the spring 7. whereby the resistance of the piles 1, 2, is reduced to a minimum. The tension of the spring 7 may be i rdjusted by means of the nutsB. 8.

It need not be explained'that when the solenoid 9 is not energized, the spring 7 will strongly urge the lovers 4,4, toward one another, whereby the resistance of the piles 1 and 2 will be a minimum. As the solenoid 9 becomes energized, the armatures 11 will be attracted against the tension of the spring 7 and will move the lovers 4, 4. away from one another. Due to the arcuate form of the ole pieces 10, 10, and the armatures 11, 11, t e pull of the solenoid 9 will be uniform. The tie rod 14 will constrain'the armatures 11 to have equal increments of movement as the pull of the solenoid increases. Due to the pivoted connections of the yokes 3. 3, withthe levers 4, 4, any tendency of the piles 1, 2, to operate unequally will be compensated for. If at any step of the action of the regulator one of said piles should tend to take more than its share of the load, it will become heated more than the other pile and will expand, operating the yokes 3, 3, as levers about the socket joints 6 to increase the ressure on the pile which is tending to take liass than its share. The increase of presure on the lagging pile will so decrease its resistance that it will at once take its quota.
One embodiment .of the present invention has been described in detail. Various modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended to cover in this patent all such modifications that come within the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent of the United States. s-
1. In an electric regulator, in combmation. a compressible pile, operating levers at opposite ends of said pile, spring means for urging said levers to compress said pile, an electro-znagnet having pole pieces with areuate pole faces, arniatures with arcuate faces coiperating with said pole pieces, each of said armatures being connected to one of said levers for operating same.

In an electric regulator, in combina lion, a plurality of compressible piles arranged with their longitudinal axes substantially parallel. operating means at opposite ends of said piles, spring means for urgin v said 0 crating means to compress said pi cs, an e ectro-niagnet having pole pieces with al't'lltltc pole faces, armatures with arcuate faces cooperating with said pole pieces. each of said arinatnres being connected to one of said levers for operating same. i

4. In an electric regulator, in combination, a. plurality of compressible piles arranged with their longitudinal axes Sill)- stantially parallel, yokes capable of a, levering action engaging adjacent ends of said piles, pressure means cooperating with said yokes. and an electro-magnet with its longitndinal axis parallel to the axes of said piles for o crating said pressure means.
5. n an electric regulator, in combination, a. plurality of compressible piles ar ranged with their longitudinal axes substantially parallel. pressure :ineans for operating on both ends of said piles simultaneously, and an elcctro-magnet having its longitudinal axis parallel with the axes of said -piles for moving said pressure means.
6. In an electric regulator, in combina tion, a plurality of compressible piles taneously,
arranged with their longitudinal axessub stantially parallel, pressure means for op erating on both ends of said piles simuland an electro-ina at having its longitudinal axis parallel with the axes of said piles for moving said pressure means, said electromagnet having pole. pieces with arcuate pole faces and armatures with areuate faces. said iii-matures being connected to said pressure means.
7. In an electric regulator, in combination, a compressible pile operating levers at opposite ends of said pile, spring means for urging said levers to'compress said pile, an electro-magnet having pole pieces with areuate pole faces, armat'ures with arcuate faces cooperating with said pole pieces, each of said armatures being connected to one of said levers for operating same, said armatures being connected to move in unison.
8. In an electric regulator, in combination, a plurality of com ressible piles arranged with their longit-u inal axes substantially parallel, operating means at opposite ends of said piles, spring means for urging said operating means'to compress said piles, an electi'o-niagnet having pole pieces with arcuate pole faces, arinatures with arcuate faces coiiperating, with said pole pieces, each of said armatures being connected to one of said levers for operating same. said armatures being connected to more in unison.
In an electric regulator, in combination. a plurality of compressible piles arranged with their longitudinal axes substantially parallel, pressure means for operating on both ends of said piles simultaneously. and an electromagnet having its longitudinal axis parallel with the axes of said piles for moving said pressure means, said electroniagnet having pole pieces with arc-nate pole faces and arinatures with areuate faces, said armatures being connected to said pressure means, said armatures being connected together whereb they are constrained to move in unison.
