Booomi, a citizen of the United States,,resident of Bufi'alo, county of Erie, State of New York, and (Jami HAR'rMA- N, a subject of, the Emperor of Germany, and resident of Lancaster, county of Erie, State of New York, have'invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Regulators, of which vention may be applied tothe regulation of any circuit. \Vhile it is particularly. useful in the regulation of the voltage applied to a lamp circuit in car lighting systems, it may also be used to regulate the generator field current and in other situations. The various novel features and combinations will more clearly appear from the detailed description given below, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. which form a part "of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front eleva tion of a regulator embodying the improvements in one form, the right halt of the figure being largely in section; Fig, 2 is-an end elevation of the regulator of Fig. l, and F 3 is a diagram illustrating the regulator in series with the lamp circuit of an electrical system of distribution such as an aide driven car lighting system Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, 1 represents a suitable panel or base plate to which is attached two supporting tran' es 'by means of bolts 3. The rod 7 is provided with slots 8 through which. loosely pass screws 9 into extensions or the frame 2 so that the rod 7 is free .to slide longitudinally of the pile 6 on said extensions, being guided in such movement by the screws 9 in the slots Each end of the rod 7 is forked at 10 and in each forked end is pivoted a lever 11. Each lever 11 is connected respectively to an operating member or head .12 at each end of the pile 6 by means of two links 13 and suitable pivot pins, the links being held in place by means i of double U-shaped straps 14:, secured together'in the center between the two links by means of a volt 15.
The lower-end of each lever 11 carries an antitriction roller 16, adapted to be engaged by they head 17 of a screw adjustably secured in the upper end of a lever 18. The levers 18 are respectively pivoted in the opposite forked endsof a supporting rod or frame 19,
slidably mounted longitudinally of the pile 6 in brackets on the frames? and guided in such movement by screws 20 passing throughsuitable slots in the rod 19 and into the frames 2. The rod 19 is sufiiciently close to the pile *6, so that it expands, due to the heat therefrom. Flat springs 21, secured respectively to the levers '11 by screws 22, have their ends bear against the frames 2 and tend to keep the rollers 16 in engagement with the heads 1'? and. take up backlash.
Pivotally connected respectively to the lower ends of the levers 18' are links 23, the downward motion of said links :23 being limited by arms 23', the other ends 0% the links 23 being both pivotally connected to the stem 24 of a core or plunger operated by an electromagnetic solenoid 2b. magnetic pull correspondingly increases, so,
that with a given voltage applied the apparatus will be maintained in equilibrium with the core in various positions. This makes the apparatus extremely sensitive. By the inter-connecting of the operating parts at each end of the pile, through the rods 7 and 19, all of the working strains are taken by the active parts or the regulator instead of through the base 1. By placing the rods 7 and 19 so that they are affected by the heat of the pile 6 they have a tendency to expand and contract with the pile 6 and thus compensate for the eficct of temperature on the regulator which would cause a greater displacement of the core 25 in the time the rods 7 and 19 did not expand so as to more or less correspondingly separate the pivot points of the lovers 11 and 18. T his compensation is permitted by the slotted and sliding arrangement of the rods 7 and 19. which permits them to move freely longitudinally of the pile 6. This arrangement also permits the pile 6 and operating mechanism to adjust themselves laterally, so that there will be no binding between the plunger 25 and stem 2st and their bearings. "lhus either one or both of the screws having their heads 17 may be adjusted without throwing the core 25 out of alinement, as the pile G and operating mechanism at each end will shift to maintain the core in proper alinement. A. regulator comprisinga pile of resistance members, mechanism acting on one end of said pile to vary the resistance thereof, mechanism acting on the other end of said pile to vary the resistance; thereof, a rela* tively fixed support for the pile, electromagnetic means for operating said mechanisms, and means supporting said mechanisms relatively movable with respect to said relatively fixed support for the pile.
A regulator comprising a pile oi. resistance members, relatively fixed supporting means for said pile, a means for varying the resistance of said pile, comprising a. member operating on each end of the pile and relatively movable with respect to said supporting means, electromagnetic means for operating said resistance varying means, and supportingmeans for said resistance varying means, relatively movable with respect to said first mentioned supporting means.
4. A regulator comprising a pile of resistance electrodes, a relatively fixed support therefor, members adapted to operate on each end of said pile to vary the resistance thereof, and a support for said members relatively movable with respect to said pile and fixed support.
5. A regulator comprising a pile of resistance electrodes. members adapted to operate on each end of said pile to vary the resistance thereof, and relatively movable supporting means for said members, permitting their movement with respect to the pile without varying its resistance.
6. A regulator comprising a pile of resist-- ance electrodes, members adapted to operate on each end of said pile to vary the resistance thereof, and relatively movable supporting means for, said members, pern'iitting their movement with respect to the pile without varying its resistance, a toggle ar- ,raugcment for operating said members to vary theresistance of said pile and electromagneticmeans foroperating said toggle arrangement.
7. A regulator comprising. a pile of resist-I ance electrodes, a. relatively fixed support therefor, lever members adapted to operate on each end of the pile to vary the resistance thereof, and relatively movable supporting means for said lever members, permitting their movement with respect to the pile without varying its resistance.
8. A regulator comprising a pile of resistance electrodes, a relatively fixed support tlierefor,'lever members adapted to operate on each end of the ile to vary the'resistance thereof, and relatively movable supporting means for said lever members, permitting their movement'with respectto the pile without varying its resistance, second levers, one
for operating each of the first two mentioned lever members and electromagnetic means for simultaneously operating said sec ond levers.

A regulator comprislng a pile of res1st ance electrodes, at relatively fixed support therefor, lever members adapted to operate on each end of the pile to vary the resistance thereof, and relatively movable supporting means for said lever members, permitting their movement with respect to the pile without varying its resistance, second levers,
one for operating each of the first two mentionfled lever members and electromagnetic means for simultaneously operating said sec- 011d levers, and relatively movable supporting means for said second levers, permitting of their movement with respect to the pile} without varying its resistance.
10. A regulator comprising a pile of resistance electrodes, a relativelyfixed support therefor, lever members adapted to operate on each end of the pile to vary the resistance thereof, and relatively movable supporting means forsaid lever members, permitting their movement with respect to the pile without varying its resistance, second levers, no for operating each of the first two men tioned lever members, a toggle arrangement operating said second levers simultaneously, and an electromagnet operating said toggle arrangement.
11. A regulator comprising a pile of resistance electrodes, a relatively fixed support therefor, lever mem'bers adapted to operate on each end of the pile to vary-the resistance thereof, and relatively movable. supporting means for said lever members, permitting their movement with respect to the pile without varying its resistance, second levers, one for operating each of'the first two mentioned lever members, a toggle arrangement operating said second levers simultaneously, and an electromagnet operating said toggle arrangement, and relatively movable supportingmeans for said second levers, permitting of their movement with respect to the pile without varying its resistance.
12. .A regulator comprising a carbon pile, fixed supporting means therefor, a relatively movable frame u'iember, and means operating on both ends of said pile connected to said frame member and relatively mov able with respect to said support ng means.

fixed supporting means therefor, a relatively resistance of both ends of the pile simul-' taneously.
15. A regulator comprising a carbon pile, fixed supporting means therefor, a relatively movable frame member, situated in proximity to the pile where it will be affected by heat from the pile so that it will expand of said pile, connected to said frame men'ibcr and relativelymovable with respect to said supporting means.
16. A regulator comprising a pile of re sistance electrodes, supporting means therefor, a frame member, situated in proximity to the pilewhere it will be affected by heat from the pile so that it will expand therewith, and means operating upon the therewith, and means operating on both ends end of the pile to vary its resistance, saidmeans being connected to said frame member whereby the operating position of said means 1s varied by expansion of the said frame member.
17. The combination with a regulating element the effect of which is altered by' variations in pressure thereupon, of pressure controlling means operatingupon each end of said element, a toggle joint uniting and cooperating with said means, and electromagnetic means for moving the knuckle of said joint.
18. The combination with 'a regulating element the operation of which may be altered by variations in pressure thereupon, of levers for exerting pressure upon both ends of said element, and a toggle joint uniting said levers whereby movement of the knuckle of said joint affects said element, electromagnetic means for moving said knuckle in one direction, and means tending to move the knuckle in a different direction.
19. The combination With'al regulating element the effect of Whlch 1s varied by variations 1n pressure, means for oontrolhng the pressure upon said element comprising a plurality of levers operating thereupon, a toggle joint cooperating with said levers, and electromagnetic means for moving the knuckle of said joint.
