UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN SOUMEILLAN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLAT E AND LEAD PENCEL SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,977, dated October 8, 1872; antedated October 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OIIN SOUMEILLAN, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Cement for Slate and Lead Pencil Sharpener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of an improved article of manufacture designed to be used as a cement for the purpose of coating articles for sharpening slate and lead pencils.
To obtain the roughened surface I use the materials hereinafter recited, combined in the proportions named. I dissolve one-half ounce gum mastic, one-half ounce gum sandarac, and one dram visinglass in one-half pint of alcohol. I also dissolve one pound of glue in water, the necessary quantity of which cannot be given with exactness. Both masses are then heated to about 212, and the dissolved glue poured into the other, and the compound immediately applied with a brush to a piece of wood or other vehicle. The emery is then thrownon until arough and file-like surface is formed, which is admirably adapted for sharpening slate and lead pencils.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination of gum mastic, gum sandarac, isinglass, alcohol, glue, and emery, substantially as specified, to form a coating upon wood for the purpose of sharpening instruments.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN SOUMEILLAN.
