means of which my saw is connected with the body of the tree, 'and this device comprises a main socket member k2 having in one side thereof, in the form of construction shown, a longitudinal slot k3, and in which is mounted a telescopic arm la* provided with a pin lc, which is movable in said slot 7c3. The arm lc* is provided at its outer end with a prong k adapted to be driven into the body or trunk of the tree, and mounted in the socket member k2 is an expansion spring k7 which normally serves to force the saw outwardly. The main socket member k2 is also rovided with a forked extension las having jaws 109 between which the gear blade e passes, and said gear blade is secured between said jaws by a headed pin 7cm provided with a thumb and linger set nut i011 by means of which the said gear blade c may be securely clamped between the jaws k", and in the operation of the device the chain i and cutters j pass through the forked extension lcs of the part c as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
The gear blade e is provided centrally and longitudinally thereof with a plurality7 of spaced apertures c3, and the pin or bolt 7.110 may be passed through any of said apertures and the attaching device k may thus be adjusted longitudinally of the saw. The jaws lug of the attaching device are spring jaws and are provided at their ends or where the pin or bolt 7:10 passes therethrough with parallel ngers k12, which also pass through Said apertures, and which serve to retain the saw device in position and prevent its vibration or lateral movement toward and from the tree, but it must be understood that my,
invention is not limited to any particular means for connecting the saw device with the body of the tree and any suitable construction may be employed for this purpose.
It will be noted on a consideration of Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing that I employ a reinforcing plate m, which is secured to the inner face of one of the side parts of the handle o by screws m2, and the shafts Z and f pass through the plate m, or the pinion d2 on the shaft d passes through an aperture m3 in said plate, while the shaft has a bearing in said plate, and the gear or the shaft h2 thereof, also has a bearing in the plate m as well as in one of the side parts of the handle c. The reinforcing plate serves to reinforce or strengthen the handle c where the gears and shafts connect therewith, and it will be noted on a consideration of Fig. 2 of the drawing that two of the screws m.2 pass through the inner' portion of the blade e and serves to retain said blade in proper position.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof. In
the beginning of'operations the saw is connected with the body of the tree, as shown and described, or in any other suitable way, and the handle c2 is gripped by one hand of the operator and the crank f3 operated by the other, and this results in drivin the chain z' around the gear blade e longitudinally thereof and in the plane thereof as will be readily understood, and in this operation the cutters j are carried around said blade longitudinally thereof, and at the same time are independently rotated and this gives said cutters a rapid rotary and longitudinal movement around said blade and the body or trunk of the tree is cut transversely thereof as indicated in Fig. l, and in this operation the saw device is constantly pressed in the direction of the tree by the operator against the operation of the spring 767. This spring, however, is a light or weak spring and but slight pressure is necessary to force the saw in the direction of the tree body. It will be apparent that in the inward movement of the saw device, the kerf is cleared by the chain 1I as it passes between the cutting teeth js of the cutters j, and the teeth and grooves in the face of the chain z' will facilitate this operation.
Although I have described my improved saw device as one adapted to be operated by one man, this method of operationyis not, of course, essential and means may be provided whereby said saw device may be operated by two men, and while I have shown and described my improved saw device as of certain detailed construction, it will be understood that in the construction of the saw device, as well as in the construction of the means herein shown and described for securing the saw device to the tree, my invention is not limited to such details of construction, and changes therein and modifications thereof may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrilicing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A saw device of the class described comprising a handle member having a projecting gear blade, a drive chain extending around said gear blade longitudinally thereof, and rotary cutters mounted between said blade and said chain and held in position by said blade and said chain and adapted to be driven around said blade by said chain.
2. A saw device of the class described comprising a handle member provided with a projecting blade member, a drive chain movable longitudinally of and around said blade, and rotary cutters mounted independently between said chain and said blade and adapted to be carried around said blade by said chain, said cutters and said chain coinsieme selves in -position and in connection with said blade.
4. ln a saw device of the class described7 a plurality of cutting devices cianprising similar side plates having cutting teeth, a central body portion for spacing and securing said side plates together, and gear teeth formed on said body portion. p

A saw device of the classv described comsimilar parts, means .for securing said parts faces of said parts, a gear blade detachably mounted in the recessed portion of said handle member, and projecting. therefrom, a drive chain `extending around, said gear blade longitudinally thereof andabout the eriphery` thereof, rotary cutters mounted between said chain and Vsaid gear blade and ladapted to travel aroundfsaidblade, gears i mounted in the recessed portion of said handle member and operatmg 1n connection together, recesses `formed in the abutting" with said chain, and means mounted transversely of said handle member for operating said gears to rotatesaid chain.
6. A saw-device of the class described comprising a handle member divided centrally and longitudinally into two approximately similar parts, means for securing said parts together, recesses formed in the abutting faces of said parts, a gear blade detachably mounted in the recessed portion of said handle member and projectingtherefrom, a drive'chain extending around said gear` blade longitudinally thereof and about the periphery thereof, rotary cutters mounted between said chainand said gear blade and adapted to travel around said blade, a transverse shaft mounted in said handle member `and provided at yone 'end thereof with a.
crank handle, a'gear mounted on said `shaft within the recessed portion of thehandle 1nember, another'gear ymounted in said reprising a handle member divided centrally and longitudinally into two approximately cessed portion and in operative connection with said chain, and means for gearing said crank will move said chain about said gear blade.
