Be it known that 1LEE R. LowTHER, a
`citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cardin on, in the county of Morrow and Stat-e of hio, haveinvented a certain new and useful Improvement `in Ealing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to baling apparatus and more particularly to an apparatus for pressing a bale into the desired form and properly binding it with tie wires by suitable mechanism which is practically auto'- matic in operation and in synchronism with thel various operative portions of the apparatus which go to make up the complete device.

The invention has for one of its objects to provide a baling press in which the'material to be formed into a bale is fed into position to be readilyV acted upon by suitable compressing mechanism so associated with the feeding device that an vintermittent feeding and compressing action occurs during the baling process.
lln the preferred embodiment ofy the present invention, a twisting mechanism is employed for twisting the tie wires at the desired point whereby the binding wires are tied to ether at the exact center of the ends of theI ales Where the knotted portions may be bent or compressed to further reinforce the knots and thereby prevent slack occurring in the binding wires thereby preventing bowed or improperly shaped bales.
Suitable timing and tie regulating mechanism is included in the apparatus, andthe various mechanisms and devices are properly associated with each other so that the entire apparatus is practically automatic in its operation and t iereby assures greater speed in the forming and tying of bales.

Referring to these drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention andfin which like numeralsof reference indicate the corresponding parts throughout the several views, the main frame 1 is mounted upon bolsters which are supported by wheels 2 to provide a portable device which ma be moved from place to place as desired. One end of the shaft 5 carries a drive pulley 6 over which partially into and out ofthe baling chamber' n a belt may be passed to drive the shaft` from a suitable source of power such as a motor 'or engine. At the opposite side of the frame, the shaft carries a balance wheel 7 and this shai't also carries a pinion 8 1n mesh with a large gear 9 onv a counter-shaft 10 and this counter-shaft carries drive pinions 11 at the ends of the shaft, each of which meshes with the large gears 12 mounted upon stud shafts 13.v Extending laterally between the two gears 12 and having its ends attached thereto is a crank pin 14 connected to one end of a pitman 15 the opposite end of which is pivotally joined to the compressor head 16 movable into and out of the receiving compartment 4 and also 3. This compressor head-16 is provided v with laterallyprojecting guides 17 movable in guideways 18 formed in the frame, The
v pitman 15 is longitudinally slotted and this slot receives the curved end 19 of a pivoted yoke 20 shown in detail in Fig. 15 of the drawing. This yoke is mountedupon the shaft 5 and the curved 'end of the yoke is provided'with an arcuate slot 2l to receive' a roller 22 carried by a pin the endsof which are fixed in the pitman at opposite sides of the slots. Pivotally mounted on the shaft 5 at opposite sides of the yoke 20 is a curved arm 23 and thesearms carry a feeding'head 24 which is rigidly secured to the arms and is movable into and out of .Y the receiving compartment when the arms 'are 'raised andlowered. Attached toV each of the Varms 23 is a coil tension spring 25 the opposite end of which is joined to a lug 26 formed on the yoke 20, as shown in Fig, 15. When the vpitman 15 is reciprocated,
Athe yoke 2O will be swung on its pivot and will oscillate as long as the motion is im' parted toit through the medium of the con# nection established by the roller 22. As the yoke 2O oscillates, the arms 23,'carrying the feeder head, will'also be raised and lowered thereby moving the feeder head into 'andout of the receiving compartment. the material in the compartment thereby preventing injury to the parts but at the same time sulliciently thrusting the material into the compartment to accomplish the desired result. ,j
Mounted upon onerv end of the frame are the wire reels er spools 26 and the Wires 27 are extended longitudinally within the frame at opposite sides thereof, the spools beingarranged to cause the wires at opposite sides to be disposed in superposed relation and properly spaced apart to engage the bale at the desired point. These wires are adapted to be engaged by laterally movable carriages 28 and 29, each of which is slidably mounted in a casing 30 projecting from each side of the frame at points near the entrance to the baling chamber 3 as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The car# riage 28 comprises a gear housing 31 including a pair of complementary members, 32 held together by bolts 33 provided with recesses 34 on proximate surfaces each of` which receives a bevel gear 35. As shown to advantage in Fig. 16 of the drawing, 90 each gear 35 has its hub projected through a central opening in one of the complementary members 32 thereby suitably mounting the gear and permitting it to revolve in the recess 34. Each provided with a radial slot 36 and the complementa members 32 which form the gear housing are also slotted as indicated I .at 37. The drive sprocket 40 is mounted Yupon a shaft 42 the end of which is rev- 1'10 olubly supported in a bracket 43. The intermediate portion of this shaft is square.

As shown to advantage in lFigls.v 12, 13 and 1,6, the ars` 35 are adapted to carry the knives 57. Each knife consists of a 'substantially frusto-conical member having a longitudinal slit 48 which extendsradially across the end 49 to form the V-'shaped cutting space 50. The edges are thereby formed to perform the cutting operation. The base of the member 47 is provided with a ange 51 having diametrically opposite arcuate slots 52 adapted to receive fastening pins received in the openings 53 formed in each of the gears 35. The ends of the .knives in each pair are in close proximity as will be observed in Fig. 16 and the cutting edges are thereby adapted to act. on the center of the twisted portion of the wireA so that the twisted portion will be severed at the point 'indicated at 53 in Fig.l 18 of .the drawing.

The shaft 66 carries a projection 67 to which is connected-one end of a coil tension spring 68 having its opposite ends fastened as at 69 to aportion of the frame. This spring normally urges the levers 61 into u right normal position when theo erator re eases his hold on either yone of the evers. This shaft 66 is also provided with a crank 70 connected to a rod 71 which has its opposite end joined to a side lever 72. vOneof these levers is arranged at each side of the machine and therefore a connection with each end of the shaft 66 is madeby duplicating the` crank 70 and the rod 71 at each side of the frame. Each of the levers 72 is provided with a projection having its curved surface forming a cam 7 3, the purpose of which will presently appear. The levers 72 are'mounted upon the outer ends of a transverse shaft 74 mounted in the lower portion of the frame.
The guides 17 carry projections 75 upon which locking latches 76 are pivoted. A shelf 77 formed on each projection 75, carries a guide rod 78 extending through a recess in thel latch 76 and embraced by a coil compression spring 79 acting to urge v the latch downwardly whereb ing rack bar 81, one of which is mounted on each side of the apparatus. The rack bars 81 are movable through supports 82 fixed to the frame and the lower edge of each rack bar is provided, near thel end thereof, with a plurality lof teeth 83. The curved end of each latch 76 is engageable with the cam 73 as the compression head is moved forwardly So that the latches will be raised out of engagement with the rack bar when thus engaged with the cams 73. Each rack bar is provided with a lug 84 adapted for en agement with the toothed end of the latch 6 whereby the rack bars may be moved rearwardly when the compression head is withdrawn. As shown in Fi s. 1, 8l and 9, the main driveshaft has eyed thereto a anged wheel 89 which embraces the 'hub portion .of a sprocket wheel 90. Mounted on the hub of the iianged wheel 89 is a disk 91 rigidly fastened 'to the sprocket wheel 90 by the boltsv 92 which extend across the space between the disk 91 and the adjacent side of the sprocket 90. The periphery of the flanged wheel 89 is provided with a lug 93 and this lug is engageable by the bill 94 of a hook 95 ivotally mounted on one of the bolts 92. he hook 95 shown in detail in Fig. 10 has one edge curved t0 providea cam surface 96 adapted to bejengaged by a pin 97 carried by a lever 98 which is valso pivotally mounted on the same' bolt 92 upon which the hook is mounted. By virtue of the shape of the dog, however, and also the engagement of the set screw with the |block 148, the do 144 will be prevented trom moving in tie opposite direction whereby locking the wheel 143 against movement n the opposite direction. 'By adjusting the set screw, the position of the dog 144 when in operative position, may be adj usted. The sprocket chain 139 passes over a sprocket 150 Imounted on the uppermost of the shafts 39 and is adapted to permit the shaft to slide through the opening in the center of the sprocket when the carriage 28 is |inoved inwardly. To maintain the sprocket 150 in the desired permanent position, however., a guard member 151 is attached to the standard in which the bearings for the shaft 139 are mounted. rlhe sprocket 150 is also provided with a. clutch element 152 adapted to 'bt-,engaged by a complementary clutch element 153 formed on the uppermost sprocket 41. When the carriage is moved inwardly, the sprockets`41 are also moved with the carriage and therefore the two complementary clutch elements 152 and 153 will engage for causing movement to be imparted to the sprocket 1.50 whereupon the chain will impart motion to the shat't upon which the sprocket 138 is mounted. The tie timing mechanism, therefore, is actuated when the carriages have been moved toward the center of the baling chamber and the lever 126 has lbeen pulled downwardly by the hook 118 which is in turn pulled downwardly by the turning ot the shaft 56, which shaft is actuated by the segmental gears as above set forth. Upon each rotatioi1 of the .gear 141, the pin 142 causes al partial movement of the toothed wheel 143 since the pin enga-ges one tooth ot' the wheel 143 upon each rotation of the gear 141.k r1`he sizeand ratio of `these gear wheels, are properly worked out to cause the star wheel 143 to engage the projection on the lever 124 at the proper interval so that the level' 126 is held downmoved forwardly. When the carriages are moved laterally to extend'into the baling chamber, the wings 155 start to swing to open position and they remain in Vthis position until the carriages have been withdrawn and the compression head 16 is again moved forwardly.

is hingedly mounted at 157 to the top o1' the frame and this catch element has plvotally mounted thereon a plurality of guards 157, each of which is provided with a plurality ot' teeth 158 which teeth are urged inwardly by contractile springs 159. Flat springs 160, attached to a cross arm 161, are engaged with the member 156 to urge the teeth of dogs downwardly and these springs are engaged by the ends oi' the turn screws 162 screw-threadedly mounted in across piece 163 andadapted to be turned by a hand wheel 164. These dogs 157, through the medium o1 the teeth 158, hold the material within the baling chamber against the back pressure occasioned by the compressed portion within the end of the baling chamber. Four retaining bars 165 are provided on each side of the baling chamber' which are bolted to the presser plates 166. A pressure cap 162v is mounted upon each side and is engageable with the plates 166 to maintain them under the proper tension and each of these caps is each integrally connected with an adjusting screw 168. A bracket 169 is mounted upon each side of the frame, the
vends of the bracket being connected to the corner pieces of the frame, as shown to advantagey in Fig. 6. Directly adjacent the cap 167, and pivotally mounted upon the co. responding endet each of the adjusting screws 168 is a lever 170. Each turn screw 168 also supports a ratchet wheel 171 engaged by a pawl 112 carried by each lever 168, while thel openings in the brac are large enough to prevent injury beingl 170. The central opening in each of the ratchet wheels 171 is screw-threaded t0 fit the screw-threads on the adjusting screw ets 169 done to the threads. The end of each screw member 168 carries a hand wheel 17 8 which may be moved into engagement with the brackets to lockthe parts by forcing the central porti-on of bracket into engagement with the ratchet wheel after the same has been adjusted to exert the proper pressure on the cap 167. The levers 170 are employed to tighten or loosen the caps 167 so that the proper pressure 'may be exerted by the presser plates 166 on the sides of the bale. The top presser plate 174 is engaged by an adjusting screw 175 mounted in a bracket 176 which adjusting screw is adapted to be turned by a hand wheel 177. Y The plate 17 4 is hingedly mounted on a suitable portion ofthe top of the frame so that the proper pressure may be exerted upon the top of the v bale while the latter is being formed.
A brake shoe 178 is pivotally mounted to permit the shoe to engage the periphery of the balance wheel 7 and may be suitably connected with a convenient lever 179 for permitting the brake shoe to be operated for engasmg wire when the the balance wheel to stop the machine when desired.
I claim:
1. In a baling apparatus, the combination, of a plurality of wire twisting members including radially slotted gears arranged in opposed pairs, means for rotating the gears 'of each pair in opposite directions, and cutters carried by the facing sides of the gears.
2. In a baling apparatus, the combination of a plurality of wire twisting members including .radially slotted gears arranged in parallel pairs, cutters carried by the facing sides of the gears and engageable with the ars have been rotated, and means for rotating the said gears.
3. In a baling a paratusfthe combination of a plurality o? wire twisting members including radially slotted gears, knives mounted upon the gears, the latter being arranged in pairs whereby certain of the said knives are in engagement with each other, and means for rotating the said gears to simultaneously turn the gears and knives.
4. In a baling` apparatus, the combination of laterally movable carriages, radially slotted beveled gears carried by one of the carriages and arranged in opposed pairs, means for rotating said gears, wire carrying means provided on the other carriage, and means for synchronously moving the carriages toward each other.
5. In a baling apparatus, the combination or' a p air of laterally movablecarriages, radially slotted beveled gears carried by one of the carriages andarranged in opposed pairs, means for rotating said gears, wire carrying fingers carried by the other carriage and adapted to move into registration with the centers of the said gears when the Y two carriages are moved toward eachother, and means for moving the carriages toward each other.
6. In a baling apparatus, the combination of a pair of laterally movable carriages, ra-
dially slotted gears carried by one of the said radially slotted gears carried by one' of theV carriages, pinions supported by the carriage and in mesh with the said gears, shatting supporting the said pinions', means for imparting rotary movement .to the shafting, and means for movin the said carriages toward each other, he said means and the said shafting being supported by one of the saidcarriages. j

In a baling ap aratus, the combination of laterally Inova le carriages, radially slotted beveled gears carried by one ofthe carriages and arranged in opposed pairs, means for rotating said ears, wirey cutters carried by the facing;l sides of the gears, means adjustably connecting the cutters to said gears, wire carrying means rovided 'on the other carriage and means or synchro-v nously moving the carriages toward each other.
9. In a baling apparatus, the combination of a plurality of laterally movable carriages, a frame supporting the carriages, a plurality of radially slotted gears carried by one of the carriages, the said gears being arranged in parallel pairs, the said pairs of gears being supported in superposed relation, means for imparting rotary movement to the said gears, whereby one gear of each pair will be rotated in an opposite direction to the rotation of the ge'ar of the pair, wire carrying fingers carried by the other carriage, a lever connected to each of the said carriages, and means for swinging the said levers to laterally move the said carriages toward the center of the said frame.
10. In a baling apparatus, the combination of a plurality of laterally movable carriages, gears carried by one of the carriages and provided with radial slots, pinioiis meshing with the gears, shafts supporting the said pinions, means for driving said shafts and including a pinion on one of the shafts having a complementary clutch memrelease ber, a second pinion on said shalts and including a second complementary clutch member adapted to register with the said rst mentioned clutch member, and means for moving the said carriage to carry the said tirst mentioned clutch member into engagement with the said second clutch member.

16. ln a baling apparatus, the combination of a plurality of wire twisting mem' bers including beveled gears arranged in pairs, a housing torsaid gearsfsaid housing including complementary ,members provided with recesses to receive said gears, a substantially conical lknife member carried by each of said gears, the latter being arranged in pairs whereby two of said knife members may be disposed in close proximit and means to rotate said gears and the said knife members simultaneously.

In combination with an apparatus of the character described, a ratchet Wheel, means for moving and locking said ratchet wheel, a locking lever releasably engageable With Said means, a shaft having a star wheel mounted thereon and adapted for engagement with said lever to move the lever means for moving and locking said ratchet Wheel, a locking lever releasably engagea'ble with said means, a shaft having a star Wheel mounted thereon and adapted for engagement with said lever to move the lever into released losition, a toothed Wheel mounted on said shaft, meansY engageable with said toothed Wheel to impart movement to the latter at regular intervals, and means to prevent rotation of saidtoothed Wheel in the opposite direction.

37. ln combination with an apparatus of the character described, a compressor head, guide members carried by the compressor head, a pair of rack bars, pawls releasably carried by the guide members and engageable with the rack bars to actuate the rack bars when said compressor head is reciprocated, and means to releasably hold the sai pawls above the rack bars.
