Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented @ot. 21, 1919.
Application filed Gcto'ber 16, 1918. Serial No. 258,413.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BASILE LAFFITTE, a citizen of France, residing at Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, have invented and discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Fountain-Pens, of which the following is a specification.
My said invention relates to fountain pens and its main object is to provide a means for conveniently filling the reservoir thereof without having to use a syringe dropper. The fountain pen is similar to others in the method of mounting the pen point, theoperation of the ink feed, and discharge, and also in the manner of protecting the point when not in use.
Other advantages will be apparent from the following descriptionand accompanying drawings in which like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views, of which Figure 1 is an elevation of the preferred form of my invention showing the protecting cap inlsection, and
Fig.2 is a longitudinal section through thebarrel of the pen.
In the drawings, 5 represents the barrel into one end of which is threaded the tip 6 of usual construction. A penpoint 7 and siphoning feed-spoon 8 of the ordinary construction are mounted in the tip 6 and the said spoon 8 communicates with the collapsible ink reservoir 10. Said reservoir which may be a rubber tube, or of any other appropriate material, is in turn provided with a knurled head 14 to facilitate operation thereof by hand. 7
An interchangeable cap 15 is provided to cover the penpoint when not in use or the head 14 when the pen is in use.
The reservoir 10 is sealed by a ca 15 having a short pin 16 projecting longitudinally from one side of the end surface thereof and adapted to be clamped in the sleeve 11 by means of a wedge plug 17. It is necessary to turn both the plug 17 together with the sleeve 11 on the threads in order to collapse the reservoir 10. It will be noted that in unscrewing the sleeve 11, the reservoir 10 is subjected to a slight elongation owing to the longitudinal movement of the plug 17 and sleeve 11, which helps to expel the air from within the reservoir.
The pen is filled with ink by twisting the head 14 until the reservoir 10 has been collapsed sulficiently to expel the air therefrom, then with the penpoint and siphon submerged in ink, allow the reservoir to untwist and expand, thereby drawing in only the volume of ink equal to the volume of air expelled, thereby preventing an overflowing of the reservoir.
1 do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown as it is evident that changes may be made in the form, proportion and minor details, without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
A fountain pen comprising a barrel, a plug provided with a passage in one end of the barrel, a pen communicating with one end of the passage, a collapsible tube communicating with the other end of the plug, a sleeve screw-threadedly connected with the barrel opposite the pen, a cap upon the collapsible tube opposite the pen and within the barrel, a pin carried by the cap and extending within the sleeve and a plug inserted within the sleeve and wedgingly engaging the pin between said plug and said sleeve.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal at Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, nineteenhundred and eighteen.
