Description
6.1i. EHNBORN` sPooL.
APPLlCATl T. 29. 1918. 1,819,381. Patented 061211919.
i UNiTEnsTATEs 'I v To all whomz't may concern.'
I resident lfjof the citylof Chicago, county of.
, cLEmENs n EHNBoaN, or cniciioo, minors.
',fsPoon Y.'
Be it known that I, CLEMENs EHN- BoRN, 4a citizen of the United States, and a Cook, and State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements Spools, of which thefollowing is a' specifi-` and arrangements of l which is strong cation.
l invention relates to improvements*in `10 spoo s,
and vhas for its .object the provision of an' improved spool for thread, or the like, and durable in use and-capable of economicall production. Other objects will appear hereinafter. 1
he invention consists in the combinations parts :hereinafter del scribed andl claimed.l j The invention will be best ,understood by reference to thel accompanying drawings forming a part, of this specification,.pand A1n which,
I illustrated inthe drawings,
. structiomf Figure. 1, is a section taken throughoneend of 4a. spool 'embodying the invention, Fig. 2, an end view of thev same, Y' Fig.v 3, a section taken. through one of 'two end anges employed in the construction and shown before the same is secured in place, and .l l.
Fig. 4,v a detail section of one end of'a central hub employed in the construction.
The preferred form comprises a central hub, of wood or like the usual` central -bore 6, and. provided at each end with an outwardly flaring conical-l projectionv 7 somewhatA smaller than the f body of vhub .-5 and -arranged with lthe smaller lend of the cone adjacent the' hub. End flangesare-'secured to each end ofsaid hulo'to'.completey the spool. 'fEach of these. end flanges 'consists `'of a 'sheet metal stamp'I ing 8 having an outwardlyextending Pe' ripheral lip orfiian-ge 9l and a central corresponding vprojection. 7 and opening' 11 registerin with bore 6to contmue-the same.l Each of t e end.4 flanges 8 is also provided with radiating beads lor. corrugations 12, which, in: conjunction with lip 9 and hub 10 serve to 4stiien 'and strengthenthe con` projection 7,
' projection, also forcing lare thus impressed the. bo
of construction, as '4 material, having hub l loprovided'with-a central opening-11, said hubI beingfofgafsizeto pass freely over the Patented oct. ai, 191e.` scopes.
' \\.v lIn assembling the spool, one of the end y flanges 8 is securedk over each ofthe projections 7 at the ends-of the hub 5. This is done-by passing the central hub 10 over the andv then spinning the periphe'ry of said hub down intc--close and tight engagement with the periphery of the the parts into snu engagement with shoulder 1,4 of the hub 5. In such spinning, beads or depressions 13 are 'formed in the periphery of hub 10 and into vthe periphery of the corresponding projection 7, thus preventing turnin of the end ange with reference to y .of the spool. In this way spools, which are strong and durable in use, may be provided with great economy. While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eii'ect, this-is capable of variationV and modification without Vdeparting from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore,
do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth,'but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope-of the appended claims. j.
Having described my' invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent is vI. A spoolcomprising a hub of wood or the'like, having a conical projection at each end arranged with the smaller end of the coneadjacent the hub; and sheet metal flanges placed over jections, substantially as described.
pool comprising ahub of wood or the like, having a conical projection at each end arranged with the smaller "end of the cone adjacent the, hub; and sheet metal anges placed over and spun onto said projections', there being beads formed in such tions, substantially as described.
and spun onto said pro# 3.V A. spool comprisingy a hub of wood o'r I.
the like, lhaving a conical projection at each end arranged with the smaller end of the cone adjacent the hub and flanges secured of said ii-anges constamping having a and a central hub tosaid projections, eao sistin of a sheet metal peri-p eral lip or iang'e fitting over the' corresponding projection.,v 4
said central hub being spun into snug'and name to this specification in the presence of close engagement with said projection, there two subscribing Witnes es. being bends formed in such spinning and CLEMEN E. EHNBORN. impressed into said projection, substantially Witnesses:
' JOSHUA R. H. POTTS,
5 as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my HEIfriN F. LILLs.
