' COMBINATION-TRUCK.
Application filed August 17, 1918. Serial N0. 250,409.
This invention relates to improvements in truck bodies, and particularlyto that type attached to motor trucks known as dumping bodies, the principal object of the invention being to produce such a body in which the sides may be spread out level with the floor for the purpose of transporting wide and bulky articles such as furniture, heavy machinery, etc., which feature will widen the scope of usefulness of such dumping body trucks, the use of which is at present confined to the hauling of such materials as gravel, rock, loose cement, and the llke.
A further object is the combination with the drop-sides of an end board which may swing out when the body is raised to dump and which is removable when the sides are dropped, thus leaving a flat platform unobstructed by any vertical members which would limit the size and shape of any article placed thereon.
A third object of the invention is to produce such a body as will be inexpensive of construction and simnle-of operation and which will be extremely eflicient for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I- accomplish by means-of such structure and relatlve arrangement of,
parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claims.
On the drawings, similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved body, shown in dumping position on the frame of a motor truck.
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken relatively on a line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary View showing an end board catch and release.
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary top view showing the connection between the front end and side boards.
Referring now. more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the main frame of the truck, to the rear end of which is hinged, as at 2, thebody 3 of the truck. The frame ofthe body is .built up in the customary manner of longitudinal beams or stringers 4 to which the endhinges are secured, cross beams 5 extending over. the beams a, and suitable flooring 6 laid lengthwise on the beams 5, :the flooring extending rearward beyond the hinges 2 for a certain distance to prevent the material being dumped fromfalling on the truck frame.
Mounted to the floor 6 by means of a plu- .rality of hinges are side boards 8 whose lower edges are normally adjacent the top of the floor, the hinge pins' being one continuous' rod 9 runnin lengthwise of the body on each side. Secured to the side boards at spaced intervals are rigid vertical supports 10, these supports extending downward below the level of the floor and side boards, andbeing, adapted to. bear on the underside of the. floor when the sides are lowered to retain the sides level with the floor.
These supporting members are: bent outwardly as at 11, in order .to pass around the hinge-pin 9'witl1'out bearing against the same.
They are also preferably constructed of channel iron .or similar shapes, in which lightness.
The front end with the usual hydraulicflift 12 whereby the body is raised for dumping.
The forward ends of the side boards 8 project over the ends of thefront end board 14,
which is rigidly mounted to the body 3.
Such forward ends are provided with cleats 8 on either side of the board 14: and straddle the same when the side boards are in vertical position. Straps 15 are secured to the side boards on the outside thereof in line with the rearmost of the cleats 8 and a rod 16 passes through the straps 15 and the said rearmost cleats, which rod is provided with hand screws 17 At the rear end of the side boards are secured straps 18 projecting above the top of the side boards. Straps 18 are secured to the rear end board 19 projecting over the top thereof, such projected ends being bent to form eyes in line with the straps 18.
great strength andrigidity is-combined with Patented Oct. 21, 19 19.
of: the body connected A rod 20 passes through straps 18 and 18 with hand screws 21 thereon, such end board being held solely by the rod 20 and adapted to swing on such rod as a pivotal point. The end board 19 is held normally against the side boards 8 by means of catches 22 on the outer ends of straps 22* mounted under the floor on one of the cross beams 5, such straps being of spring steel and normally pressing upward to hold the catches in engagement with the outside of the end board 19.
A rod 23 is turnably mounted to the floor above the straps 22 and has lugs 24: thereon adapted to bear against the straps. This rod has an arm 25 downwardly depending therefrom, which arm has a connected rod 26 pivot-ally secured thereto running to the forward end of the body and connected at that point to an operating lever 27 mounted on the body 3. Thus when the lever is pulled, the lugs 24 are pulled down against the straps 22 which pressure pulls the catches out of engagement with the end 19 and allows the same free movement outwardly.
In the operation of the device, supposing it is desired to use the body as a dumping body only, the sides remain in their vertical position being held there by the hinges 7 at the bottom and the rods 16 and 20 with the screws 17 and 21 at the top. The rear end board is then free to open out as the body is raised by the operation of the lever mechanism. h'ereinbcfore described.
Should it be desired, however, to use the body as a fiat platform, the screws 17 and 21 are removed from their respective rods, the
sides are then lowered to. a horizontal position till they rest on the supports 10. This, of course, frees the rear end board 19 from any connection with the body and the same may be stored or carried on the truck in any suitable place until such time as it is desired to reassemble the sides of the truck body.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I ave produced such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
Copies 01 this patent may be obtained for While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a dumping truck body having a front end board rigidly mounted to the flooring and side boards hinged to the flooring and adapted to be lowered to the level of the floor and retained in that osition, demountable means common to both side boards at the upper front and rear ends thereof whereby the same may be held in a vertical position, and an end gate hinged along its upper edge to the rear one of such side board holding means, whereby when the body is raised to dump the truck the end gate will swing automatically on its hinges, and may be removed with the side board holding means when desired to lower the sides to form a platform.
2. In combination with a dumping truck body having a front end board rigidly mounted to the flooring, and side boards hinged to the flooring and adapted to be lowered to the level of the floor and retained in that position, demountable rods common to both side boards at the upper front and rear ends thereof whereby the same may be held in a vertical position and an end gate hung along its upper edge on the rear one of said rods, whereby when the body is raised to dump the truck, the end gate will automatically swing on the rod, and may be removed with the holding rod when desired to lower the sides to form a platform.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
