Description

W. N-IWEEDEN. Improvement in Combined Holdin-g and Supporting- Springs' for Lamp-Chimney.
25 wgm UNITED STATES PATEN OEEIoE.
WILLIAM N. WEEDEN, OF WATEBBURY, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE BENEDICT & BURNHAM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED HOLDING AND SUPPORTING SPRINGS FOR LAMP-CHIMNEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,918, dated October 1, 1872.
CASE A.
burner having my improvement applied and with the chimney (shown in section) in its place; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are views, showing modified constructions of the chimneysupport and holder which constitute my invention. 7
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Although other advantages are or may be attained, the main object of this invention is I to construct a chimney-support and outside holder of a lamp-burner, which, although stiff or made of a stout metal, shall possess a large amount of elasticity. To this end, the invention consists in a combined chimney-support or seat and outside holder made of a spring formed with one or more coils, whereby increased elasticity is given to the arms which form the holder.
A represents the cone of a lamp-burner; B,
its wick-tube; and C, the lamp-chimney. D D
are the chimney-supports or seats and outside spring-holders, each of which is composed of a strip or wire soldered or otherwise secured to the body of the burner, and either formed with or without a cone-support, I); but in each case constructed with an outer upper extension or arm, 0, to press and hold on the outside of the chimney, and with one or more coils, d, in the chimney-seat portion 6, preferably, but not necessarily, within the diameter of the chimney, the coils, if more than one,
lying side by side, and being formed by giving the chimney-supporting portion 0 of the spring or wire repeated twists or turns, as around a mandrel. By means of these coils d, the chimney supports and outside holders D D may be made stifier, especially as regards the holdinging armsc c, and yet a large degree of elasticity is given them to press and hold on the outside of the chimney. When said coils are arranged, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, so as to be within the chimney C, then said coils also act as guides to the chimney inside, giving additional stability to the chimney when in place and preventing the chimney from tipping also keeping it concentric with the cone, and answering the same purpose as a groove for holding the chimney in place. In some cases, however, it may be desirable to arrange the coils cl below the chimney, as illustrated in Fig. 4, or to arrange them outside the diameter of the chimney. The arrangement, however, shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is preferred, for the reasons hereinbefore given.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A lamp-burner provided with combined chimney-supports and outside holders D, each of which is formed of a spring having one or more coils, d, in it, substantially as specified.
