Description
U N ITED S'IA'IES PATENT OFFICE.
BARTHEL ERBE, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN REVERSIBLEKNOB-LATCHES.
' Spkacification forming pa1tbf Letters Patent %To. 131.,860, dated October l, 1872.
v T0 all wlwm it mag; c0ncem:
Be it known that I, BARTHEL ERBE, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and Sttte of Pennsylvania, have inveuted a new and usefu1 Improvement in Reversible Knob- Latohes; aml I do hereby declare the foll-owing 110 be a fu11, olear, and exact description thereof, referenoe being hat]. by letters 110 the acoompanying drawing making a part of this specifioation, whioh represents my improved 1ock With the yoke and lateh in position for the reversal of the latter, and also with the position of both, when in use, represented by dotted lines.
and. use n'ayimprovement, I will prooeed 110 desoribe its construction and mode of operation. 4
The look-oase B is of any suitable oonstruc tion. The lateh-bolt a has the usual bevel on one side, back of which is a squzire part, b w'here it fits into theface-plate b of the lockoase. Back of the square shoulder is a eylindrioalstem, a, whieh terminates in a shank, c, of comparatively small diuneterand at the base or rear end of the latter is a head,*c. The forward end of the spindle-yoke B is reoessed or bifureated, as at d d, and the stem 0 projeots back into this recess. One arm of the bifurcation-preferably the upper one, dextends so nearly to the face-plate b as 130 be he1d down, when the lateh-bolt is in position f0r use, by one of the sorews of the look in the serew-hole g. 'lhe immer edges of the reoesS 01' eure the baokward or unlatohing nt1otion of the holt in the usual way. Then, to reverse the latchbolt a, the serew in the sorew-hole g is removed. A slight pressure is then applied 130 the top 0f the projecting e:nd or tongue of the Wach-holt, which has the efi'eot t0 throw the arm d upward 130 the position shown in the drawing. T he head c oan then pass forward of the 111g s and the lateh-bolt is free to be withdrawnfor reversa] 130 the position shown 'in the drawing, With the cylindrioal stem a in the recess of the face-plate b. 'lhe 1atohholt is then reversed and pushed back till the square part b oeeupies the recess in the faceplate, and the head c is back of the 111g s A s1ight pressure is then applied to the under side of the projeoting end of the latoh-bolt, Whioh thr ows down the arm d of the yoke to the position indioated by dotted lines. A screwis then inserted in the hole g, whioh keeps thedevioes in plaoe for use. The ]ug s keeps the head c down, so that it oannot pass over the 1ug s when |the 1ook is in use; aud the lag 3 when the lateh-bolt is being reversed, holds the shank c up, so that the head c"oannot' pass forward of the 111g s, or, in other words, keeps the latch-bolt from eoming out. Any suitable removable fastening may take the place of the sorew in the screw-hole g.
What I olaim as my invention, and desire 130 seoure by Letters Patent, is
A sliding-yoke, B extending directly from the hub to the latoh-stem, reoessed or bifuroated at its forward end, and having 1ugs s s,
BARTHEL ERBE.
