HOIST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 14. 1919.
Application filed December 15, 1915. Serial No. 66,996.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. Krrrnnnen, a citizen of the United States, residin at Akron, in the county of Summit and tate of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Hoist, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to hoists in which an electric motor operates a winding drum, and is applicable to derricks, cranes, mines, elevators and the like.
The objects of my improvements are 1st. To provide a hoist of small first cost,
' size and weight.
2nd. To make it simple, working with few operations on the part of the operator, thus economizing labor, time and skill.
3rd. To eliminate the wearing parts and thus reduce the friction.
4th. To rovide an automatic sto and prevent accidentally hoisting the loa into the overhead sheave.
I attain these objects by the mechanism shown in the accompanying drawings, in which;
Figure 1 is a longitudinal cross-section; Fig. 2 is an end view; Fig. 3 is a fra mentary side elevation with the upper ha f in section.
A. 'ven piece carries the same number throughout the several views. For convenience of description, parts fastened rigidl together are cross-hatched alike thoug they may be different pieces of metal. In such a case the whole part, moving as a single piece, is designated by a single numeral, as 8, and different ends or faces by that numeral with letters as 8*, 8 8 etc.
The machine consists of a base 1, suporting housings with bearings 2 and 3 earings 2 and 3 carry the rotating armature of a motor 5, similar in function to the starter of an ordinary motor but differing in form, and the rotating armature 5 carries the rotating field 6, and the shaft 6 which are entirely similar to the corresponding parts of commercial motors. The rotatin armature 5 ma rotate in its bearin 2 an 3 and its perip ery is in the form 0 a drum 5, and winds the hoisting rope 7 Electric current is brought to the rotatin armature by the collecting rings 5 and t e brushes 3 held in the sup, ort 3 .-The,,collecting rings are insulate by the insulator 5.
On its outer end, the rotating armature 5 carries an annular gear 5. The shaft 6 carries a pinion 8 turning loosely on the shaft. A clutch, hereinafter described, grlps it to the shaft at the will of the 0 erator. The pinion 8 has a sleeve 8', an on this sleeve is mounted a second annular gear 9. Mounted on the shaft 6 and the sleeve 8, are two disks 10 and 10 carryin the shafts 10 and 10 and on these two s afts are mounted two double gears 11 and 12. The disks 10 and 10 are bolted to the filler plates 10*" shown dotted in Fig. 2, which binds the disks rigidly together without interfering with the ears. The gears 11 and 12 mesh with t e pinion 8 and also with the annular gear 9, forming a set of planetary gears, shown by their respective pitch circles in Fig. 2. The gears 11 and 12 mesh with the annular ear 5. The ratio of 5 to 11 or 12 is sligfitly different from the ratio of 9 to 11 or 12 Thus as the gears 11 and 12 are rotated, a slight difference in the speed of rotation is transmitted to the annular gears 5 and 9.
To illustrate :Suppose the pinion 8 to have 24 teeth; gears 11 and 12 to have 62 teeth each; gears 11" and 12 to have 21 teeth each; and annular gears 9 and 5 to have 148 and 107 teeth respectively. Supose the annular gear 5 is made stationar or the time being, as by having the rope fastened to a heavy weight 15, and suppose the pinion 8 to revolve counter clockwise, as indicated by the arrow. The disks 10 and 10 revolve in the same direction as the pinion but more slowly, and the double gears 11 and 12 move about the central shaft 6 and also turn on their own axles 10 and 10. Gear 9 moves slowly clockwise.
Now suppose the annular ar 9 is brought to rest by a brake. e pro er brake for this purpose is not a part of t is invention and for purposes of this patent ap lication a simp e band brake 13 and pedal 14 are shown. The pinion 8 and gears 11 and 12 rotate almost as before, and the annular gear 5 revolves slowly counter clockwise or in the same direction as the pinion 8 and raises the weight. With gears as above described, the pinion 8 running 1150 R. P. M. turns the gear 5 and the drum 85 R. P. M., and with a itch diameter of 27 ins. for the winding rum, gives a hoisting speed of 600 feet per minute.
15 to drop. Both annular gears 5 aged 'Weig t and 9 now turn nearly together and earrythe train.

It will be noted armature are connected by the train of gears, they have a definite speed, relation but with the brake released, there is no mechanieal connection and an eleetriealrelhtion ohlfgi The pinion 8 was said above to be loose on the"shaft6.
