Description

R. l.l CLAY.
`improve Mechanical-Toys; f 940.131,84). l Patented 0ct.1,1872.
UNITED STATEs" PATENT EEIOE.
ROBERT J. CLAY, OE NEW YORK, N. Y.
yIMPROVEMENT IN MECHANICAL TOYS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,849, dated October 1, 1872.
To all whom' 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J. CLAY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have in vented a new and useful Mechanical Bear-Toy 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure l representsan outside view of the mechanical `bear in an erect position with its covering removed5Fig. 2, a partially vertical head to. and fro in a snapping manner, thus giving to the automaton actions which invest it with the semblance of life.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents the main portion or body of the animal; B, its
` head; C, its hind legs or limbs; and D D, its
fore legs. A covering resembling the natural skin or coat of the animal is applied tothe exterior ofl the several parts. The body A is made to contain the clock-work, which may be of any suitable description, and is here repre sented as consisting ot' a coiled spring, b, having a winding-arbor, c, projecting through the l side of the animal, and provided with aratchet and pawl, said arbor c giving motion, by means of a wheel,-d, to a train of gear, e, f, g, h, t', k, and l.- Said body A is pivoted below to rock on a cross-pin, m, on the ends of which the hind limbs U are fitted. Upon the revolving arbor o is a toe, E, that works against a cam, F, fast to one side of the front portion of the body or frame carrying the clockwork, said toe and cam being so shaped that the toe in revolving operates during a part of its rotation upon or against the cam to gradually raise the body from its crouching position, shown in Fig. 2, to the erect posture represented for it in Fig. l, and afterward, or as the protrud-v ing portion of the toe leaves the cam, and after it has left it, admits of the body falling by its weight onto the heel or hub of the toe, where it remains till again lifted. The fore limbs D D of the animal are vibrated from a cross-joint pin, o, asa center of motion to shake or work as if pawing by cranks on opposite ends of the spindle which .carries the gears ej', one,'G, of which cranks is shown in Fig. 1. Each of these cranks is connected, by a separate pitman, H, to the limb D it controls, and said cranks should be so set that the up-and-down motion of either limb D is alternate. The lower jaw of the animal is pivoted at a, and is opened and closed in moderately rapid succession by means of a cam, I, on the spindle of the gears e f operating against a toe connected with a lever, q, which is attached, by a cord, 1", to the jaw and acts in concert with aspring, s, to produce an opposite action on the jaw to that -of the cam. The head B is slightly turned in one direction at intervals, and returned in a sudden or snapping manner to its original or straight position, as follows: The neck portion of said head has ,attached to it a pivot, t, which connects it with the frame of the body or bracket a therefrom, and provides for the turning of the head. Upon the one side of the main wheel d is a pin, o, which, as it comes round in the rotation of the wheel, temporarily acts upon a cam-like projection ofa lever, K, that may have its fulcrum on the cross-pin m, and which, being forced away by the pin o, pulls upon a cord, w, that, running and being suitably guided up through the body and attached to thehead at an Von one side of the pivot t, causes the head to be gradually turned in one direction. So soon, however, as the pin leaves the cam-like projection of the lever K, a spring, L, arranged to pull on the opposite side ofthe head to that on which the cord w is attached, operates to suddenly jerk the head back to its normal position, thus, or when combined with the opening and closing of the mouth, giving the animal a snapping action.
What is here claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
l.A The combination of Vthe revolving toe EV with the cam F and body A ofthe animal, ar-
ranged to rock on a lower cross-pin or pivot, structed to turn, as described, and y back, of fm, substantially as specified. the mechanism for opening and closing the 2. The combination, with the fore limbs D, lower jaw, essentially as herein set forth. of the revolving cranks G and connecting- ROBT. J. CLAY. A rods H, essentially as and for the purpose Witnesses: herein set forth. FRED. HAYNEs, 3. The combination, with the head B, eon- FERD. TUscH.
