Description

J. D. ARNOLD.
Improvement in Hubv for Carr iaig e-Wheels.
r No. 131,838;
llllllllllllilllllllllllillll "mum UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN D. ARhlOLD, OF MURRAY, ASSIGNDR OF TWO-THIRDS HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM E. NEER AND BYRON D. BIDDLEOOM, OF ROCHESTER, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HUBS FOR CARRIAGE-WHEELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 131,838, dated October 1, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, JOHN D. ARNOLD, of Murray, in the county of Orleans and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metal Hubs for Carriage- Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is an exact and full description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The drawing represents a central longitudinal section of my cast-metal hub.
In the accompanying drawing, A B denote the two principal parts of which the hub consists, and O D refer to the two annular disks between which the spokes of the wheel will be inserted.
The shell B, which constitutes the inner end of the hub, is cast with the axle-box E; and
- the shell A, which constitutes the outer end or half of the hub, is cast with the rim F and annular support G, into which the box E fits closely. The chambers H and Iextend entirely around the box E, as indicated in the drawing. The outer end of the box E will be provided with a screw-thread, as will also the support G, which will serve to retain the parts firmly together. The annular disks may be made with flutings or corrugations, either radially or in circles, upon their inner faces, to impinge upon and clamp the tenons of the spokes, which will be. inserted between them. To insert the spokes three blocks may be first inserted between the disks at equal distances spokes, as in the first instance.
apart, and after three spokes are driven between the flanges G D, the three blocks may be removed and the remaining spokes will be with the wooden hub; and its weight will not be much greater. It also has the advantage of superior strength and durability. By the use of my hub new spokes for repairs may be inserted by unscrewing the part A and inserting the spoke, and then screwing up the part A, and thereby clamping the disk G with the This may be done without cutting and resetting the tire of the wheel.
Having describedmy invention, I-claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combined metal hub and box, constructed of the four parts A, (J, D, and, B E, connected and arranged to operate conjointly, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as described.
In testimony hereof I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of August, A. D. 1871.
i JOHN D. ARNOLD.
