Description

PAUL DE MILES, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y'.
ELECTRIC FURNACE.
Specification of Letters Patent. 1
Application filed January 25, 1918. Serial No. 213,653.
To alt 'LU/1,0m may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL or; MILES, a subject of the King of Belgium, residing at borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Electric l4`u'rnaces, of which the following is a specip ication.
This invention relatesto electric furnaces. More particularly, 'the invention is' directed lto electric furnaces of the oven type' heated by electrical resistance material.
In the preferred forms of the invention, the electrodes are made hollow to provide for cooling jackets for the flow of a suitable cooling medium. Also, means are provided for holding the electrodes under pressure in good electrical contact with the electrical resistance materia-l.
When desired, the oven is supported on the casing of a transformer, utilized to transform any supplied current to the Ydesired voltage and amperage suitable for the furnace. i t
Other features and objects of the invention will be more 'fully understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of an enibodiment of my lnvention, showing the oven furnace mounted on the transformer casing; Y and The embodiment of the invention illus trated in the `figures of the oven type. However, the invention is applicable to all other types of inclosed furnaces.
The oven 1 comprises the vouter casing or shell 2, lined on its Walls with brick 3, of suitable resistant properties. n
The oven 1 also comprises the cover 4, adapted to be sealed With'the oven walls 3 by means of the clamps 5.
rovided with the closure or door The ttom or other supporting,` portion of the interior of the oven is adapted to receive or support a crucibleor like container for the metal or other material. to be heated or melted. i I
The heating element of the furnace com prises the electrical resistance rod 7 of carbon, or the like, the same beingv located within the oven to provide the desired heat'. The number of resistance heating elements The oven is also is determined by the effective cross-section of the same and the temperature desired.
The electrodes 8, 9 of cast iron or the like are arranged in good electrical contact with the resistance element or elements.' Preferably, such arrangement is effected by the provision of means to maintain. good electrical contact at all times of operation. ,One such means is indicated in the embodiment illustrated, comprising,` the abutmentslO, 11,
held under pressure against the respective.
electrodes 8, 9 by the adjustable cross-rod 12,- as loymeans of the lock-nuts 13, threaded to said cross-rod 12. rlhe opposite ends of the abutments l0, 11 are secured to the brackets 14 fixed to but electrically insulated from the side walls of the oven. As shown,
the electrodes project through the respective side Walls and sealed with magnesite, and the cross-rod behindand outside of the rear `walls of the oven.. Electrical insulation of the rod 12 is attained'loy the insulating' ring in the respective .abutments and engagingthe respective electrodes.
The electrodes 8, 9 are preferably hollow to provide cooling; jackets, having the inlets 17 respectively connected to the rubber inflow piping 18 and also having the outlets y19 respectively connected to the rubber outfiowpiping 20. The pipe 21 represents a suitable sup ly pipe of cooling medium such as Water. Xs shown, the' cooling means is preferably disposed exterior of the Walls of the furnace.
If desired, the oven or furnace is supported on the casing 22 of a transformer or the like. The regulating arm of the resistance or impedance is indicated at 23. The electrical cables 211, 25, are respectively connected to the electrodes 8, 9.
Whereas I have described my invention by reference to specific forms thereof, it will he understood that many changes and modifications may be made 'Without departing from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claims.
l claim:
1. An electrical furnace comprising a hollow casing provided with openings, an olecf trical resistance rod positioned in said openings extending through the interior of said casing, electric terminals adapted to engage Patented (let. l?, i919.
lef
said resistance rod at spaced locations thereof, means for exerting pressure on said terminals to thereby more firmly engage said resistance rod, said pressure exerting means comprising parts respectively engaging said electrodes and means for electrically insulatin' said ressure exertin means ,fromv 3.' An electrical furnace comprising a hollow easing provided with openings, Walls of heat resistant material, an electrical/ resistance rod positioned in said openings/and extending interierly of said casing /between said Walls, terminals adapted to engage the respective ends of said resista-nce rod, means for exerting pressure on said terminals to thereby more firmly engage the ends of said resistance reds, said pressure exerting means comprising individually movable parts respectively engaging said electrodes, means for. electrically insulating said pressure exerting means from said electrodes, hollow members respectively adjacent said electrodes 'and passages connecting said hollow members individually and adapted to convey a 'eenling fluid.
n testimony whereof I have signed this specication this 22nd day of January, 1918.'
