LEON DICOP, OF LEV ALLOIS-PERRET, FRANCE.
Application filed September 12, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEON DICOP, a citizen of the French Republic, and residing at LevalloisPerret, Seine, France, No. 68 Rue des Arts, engineer, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shearing, Cutting, Nipping, Punching, and the like tools, of which the following is a specification.
The jaws of shearing, cutting, nipping, punching and the like tools are usually actuated by means of levers to the ends of which the actuating power is applied.
In cases where the power required to be exerted at the jaws is fairly large the said levers have to be made of such lengths as render the tool unwieldly in handling.
The present invention has for its object to provide an improved ratchet gear whereby the actuating levers are caused to make a plurality of strokes while the jaws are making only one stroke. This arrangement enables the tool to be made of comparatively small size while being capable of exerting great power.
The accompanying drawing illustrates by way of example a practical construction of a shearing tool provided with the improved ratchet gear.
In this example 1 is the fixed lever forming part of the body or frame of the tool carrying the fixed jaw or shearing cutter 2.
3 is a pin fixed to the said body or frame; it carries, fulcrumed on it, the movable jaw or shearing cutter 4 which is extended rear: wardly in the form of an arm in the free end of which a roller 10 is mounted.
5 is the movable actuating lever fulcrumed on a pin 6 mounted in the said body or frame. This pin 6 carries a ratchet wheel 7 to which a cam 8 is fixed. The roller 10 is arranged to. bear upon the periphery of the cam 8. The movable actuating lever- 5 carries a pawl 9 engaging the ratchet wheel 7 with which it is kept in engagement by a spring 12.
By moving the movable actuating lever 5 toward the fixed actuating lever 1, the cam 8 is caused to rotate, and thus force the movable jaw 4 to move toward the fixed jaw 2.
One complete stroke of the jaw 4 corresponds to a complete revolution of the cam 8, and consequently to a plurality of strokes of the actuating lever 5. The work done by the jaw 4 is the product of the force applied to the lever 5 with the total stroke of the latter lever (sum of its partial strokes) it Specification of Letters Patent.

is therefore considerable in view of the small size of the tool.
When the aws 2 and 4 have come in con tact with each other the roller 10 moves down along the step 11 on to the lowest portion of the curve of the cam, and the jaw 4 is caused by a spring 13 to move away from the jaw 2.
When the jaws need make only a short stroke, as is the case for instance of a shearing tool employed to cut a wire of small thickness, and therefore there is only a small amount of work to be done, the actuating lever 5 and the cam 8 may be fixed to each other by a device not shown, and then the tool will operate like an ordinary shears wherein each stroke of the lever 5 corresponds to a stroke of the jaw 4.
It is to be understood that without departing from the essential nature of the invention, both the shearing jaws may be made movable and operable by one and the same cam either directly or through the medium of additional levers.
The improved actuating mechanism is also adapted for actuating in like manner the blades or cutters of cutting-out tools, or the jaws of nippers, Or a punch, etc.
What I claim is 1. 'In mechanism for actuating the jaws of shearing, cutting, nipping, punching and the like tools, the combination of a fixed lever carrying the fixed j aw of the tool fixed to the frame of the tool, an actuating lever fulcrumed on an axle on said frame, a ratchet wheel rotatable on the axle of said actuating lever, a cam fixed to said ratchet wheel and rotatable with it on the same center, a pawl pivoted to said actuating lever, engaging said ratchet wheel, an arm fulcrumed on said frame, a roller mounted on one end of said arm, adapted to roll over and be engaged by said cam, and a movable jaw mounted on or engaged by the other end of said arm.
2. Tool elements for effecting a relatively large amount of work with a relatively small movement, comprising two manipulating levers, one of which is movable relative to the other, a ratchet wheel operatively connected with and actuated by one of said levers, two tool members, one of which is movable relative to the other, and a cam operatively connected with said ratchet wheel for actuation thereby, said cam being operatively connected with one of said tool members for moving the same toward the other tool member.
3. Pliers comprising a fixed lever, a fixed jaw rigid with said lever, a pivotalcontrol lever, a'pawl carried by the control lever, a ratchet wheel, a cam rigid with the ratchet wheel, said cam and ratchet wheel being pivotally mounted on the axis of the pivotal control lever, the pawl being in engagement a I is ,758
with said ratchet wheeh a pivoted jaw cooperating with the fixed jaw and a roller carried by thepivoted jaw and contacting 1Q with said cam. ,7 r V In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
