Application filed January 11, 1919. Serial No. -270,768.
To all whom it may concern Be it-known that I, J 01m A. How/Lemar, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Woodlawn, in the countyof Beaver and- State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement paratus; and I vdo hereby. declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descripy paratus and more particularly to apparatus to be employed in connection with the stripping of coils of which the wire has been wound, although other uses for the invention may be deve loped..
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficient form of stri pin apparatus by means of which the coils oit wire may be quickly stripped released from the stripping device. r v
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed. a
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a view of the stripper in position n full lines, the position of the stripper after the stripping operation being indicated in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a view of the stripper in-collapsed position; Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of a portion of the stripper, and Fig. 5 shows a modified form of my invention. i
In the drawing the numeral 2 designates the reel or support around which the coiled bundle. of .wire 3 has been wound. This reel 2Jis provided with the spider 4 with I the radial grooves'5 formed therein, which pivotedly mounted by the pins. 8 on the register with the radial slots 6 in the reel..
The stripper, 6 is composed of the arms 7 lugs 9 which form the bearing for the shaft 10. The shaft 10 has the head 11- which rests upon the lugs 9, and below saidlugs on said shaft is the collar 12. In this manner .theshaftlO is held against vertical movement, but is free to rotate in its hearing. The shaft 10- is provided with the key 13 which is adapted to engage a in Stripping Apwire from a wire reel upon through lowered from the reel and 7 are lowered down into the slots 5, where-- keyway 14 in the :sleeve 15 through whichthe shaft 10 passes. At the lower end of the shaft 10 The sleeve 15 is provided with the lugs '17 and pivotedly connected to said lugs are the toggle arms 18. The outer'ends of the toggle arms 18 are connected to the swinging arms 17.
' is the nut 16.
- The lower ends of the arms 7 are provided with the foot-portions 19. At the upper end of the shaft 10 is the connection 20 by means of which the stripper is suspended from :an overhead crane or other apparatus.
When the wire hasbeen wound on the reel in the ordinary manner, and has been tied by the tie-wires-21, which may he slipped up the slots 6, the stripper is then in its'collapsed form andthe arms the shaft 10 the upon by forcing down on the toggle-arms 18 are forced outward into position shownin Fig. 1 bringing the foot-.
will be apparent by the upward movement of the stripper with the foot-portions 19 under the coil of wire, said coil will be stripped from the reel and heldsuspended above the same as clearly indicated in dotted lines Fig.1. The stripper carrying the wire may then be. moved to a point where the wire is to tie-deposited, whereupon by- 10 until the key 13 comes turning the shaft into register with the key-way 14: the weight of the wire will cause the arms 7 to collapse and assume the position indicated in Fig. 3, the bundle of wire freed therefrom as indicated in dotted lines Fig. 3.
What I claim is:
Ina stripping device, the combinati n of swinging arms having foot portions, a shaft, a bearing from which said ported, a sleeve on said shaft,
arms are sup. said shaft and sleeve rotary the one with relation to'the.
other, toggle-arms connecting said sleeve to In testimony whereof, I the said J 01m A. said swinging arms, a key on said shaft, and HOLM UIST have hereunto set my hand.
a key-way formed in said sleeve whereby by the turning of said shaft or sleeve, said key JOHN HOLMQUIST' 5 is brou ht into register with said key-way, Witnesses:
permittmg said arms to swing to released A. E'CLANEY, position. v Ron. D. TOTTEN.
